Movie Review (Panic Fest 2021): Blood Conscious

Writer/Director Timothy Covell’s Blood Conscious is a gripping horror thriller that touches on social commentary while delivering a good share of excitement and paranoia. Brittney (DeShawn White), her university student younger brother Kevin (Oghenero Gbaje), and her fiancée Tony (Lenny Thomas) travel to Brittney’s and Kevin’s family lakeside cabin in the woods for a relaxing getaway with their parents. They explore the eerily quiet surroundings and Kevin discovers the bodies of his parents and their neighbors, who have all been shot or otherwise violently killed. The perpetrator — Nick Damici as “The Stranger” — sneaks up on them, demanding to know at gunpoint whether they are humans or, as he claims, demons who replaced the murder victims before he disposed of them. The trio manages to overcome the stranger and lock him in the basement, where he continues to shout that they should protect themselves from the demons, who are on their way. Though Brittney and Tony insist that his

New Horror Comedy ‘Werewolves Within’ Will Leave You Howling With Laughter

After a proposed pipeline creates divisions within the small town of Beaverfield, and a snowstorm traps its residents together inside the local inn, newly arrived forest ranger Finn (Sam Richardson) and postal worker Cecily (Milana Vayntrub) must try to keep the peace and uncover the truth behind a mysterious creature that has begun terrorizing the community in Werewolves Within. Directed by Josh Ruben and written by Mishna Wolff, Werewolves Within stars Sam Richardson, Milana Vayntrub, George Basil, Sarah Burns, Michael Chernus, Catherine Curtain, Wayne Duvall, Harvey Guillén, Rebecca Henderson, Cheyenne Jackson, Michaela Watkins, and Glenn Fleshler. I grew up near the same small town where we shot Werewolves Within. As a kid, I’d freak myself out, making up monster stories, running through the woods, pretending I was Chief Brody, fighting creatures in the brush (I LOVED Jaws — hell, I loved horror). That hometown experience, where neighbors knew your business (whether you liked it or not) is so much of

Movie Review: At Night Comes Wolves (2021)

Director TJ Marine’s At Night Comes Wolves is headed towards its release. Here are my thoughts on the movie about a cult. Right off to bat we meet a couple, Leah and her husband Daniel. We are given reason after reason to dislike Daniel whose dutiful wife will do anything to please him. She gets to her breaking point and just walks away from her life and her asshole of a husband. She meets a young woman who leads her to her Guru/cult leader, and things quickly unravel as secrets are revealed. The lead character played by Gabi Alves is left lacking. She has very few lines and mostly just mopes around the entire movie, which is not the fault of the actress. There’s also very little character development for her, which is a shame. I think the film was meant to speak out against misogyny and mistreatment, yet when the main character gets out of an abusive relationship she

Movie Review: In the Earth

Warning note for potential viewers: In the Earth contains several strobe effects and should be avoided by those who have concerns regarding that. Writer/director Ben Wheatley returns to his British folk horror roots of Kill List (2011) and A Field in England (2013) with his latest U.K. feature, In the Earth. It’s an absolute trip — complete with psychedelic sequences — that plays on pandemic fears, isolation, and otherworldly nature entities. Dr. Martin Lowery (Joel Fry) arrives at a makeshift outpost in the forest during the third wave of a virus that has brought death and paranoia to the nation and beyond. He and park ranger Alma (Ellora Torchia) set out on a multiple-day hike to deliver materials to the research site where a missing colleague of Lowery’s, Dr. Olivia Wendle (Hayley Squires), has been out of contact for some time. They are attacked, robbed, and left barefoot. As the forest becomes more claustrophobic with each step, the pair find
