DVD Review: The Beast Beneath (2020)

An earthquake in a small desert town unleashes an ancient beast that then goes on to terrorize said town like a mother fucker. That’s the premise of the latest from prolific writer/director Dustin Ferguson, The Beast Beneath; a throwback to the creature features you’d find all over network TV in the wake of Jaws. Now make no mistakes, this is a lower budgeted feature, so straight up you get padding with long credit sequences and some shots that go on for a bit more than they should. Also some of the acting is spotty… but it’s nice to see turns from legendary scream queen Brinke Stevens and Kung-fu flick mainstay Mel Novak on display. If you are a fan of my column that those types of technical issues don’t mean jack and or shit to your’s cruelly, and I know it doesn’t to a number of you cats n’ creeps as well… what matters to me is: is the story

Indie Horror ‘Blood Beast’ Kicks Off Indiegogo Campaign

Matt Leal and Matt Festle (Hacked), have launched their Indiegogo Campaign for the upcoming creature feature Blood Beast. Starring Lew Temple (“The Walking Dead”), Dave Sheridan (The Devil’s Rejects), and Sleepaway Camp scream queen Felissa Rose, in the film, when Gabe and his niece Piper are forced to move back to their old home, they slowly uncover the truth that the town has an ancient evil lurking in its Forest. Shawn C. Phillips, Mike Ferguson, Alan Maxson, and Marion Moseley also star in the film which promises to keep you on the edge of your seat. Leal’s approach and sources of inspiration are a combination of old and new, when approaching Blood Beast visually and in scope, he pulls from classics like Suspiria, and Halloween as well as blending some of the style and tone in drama from newer horror works such as It Follows and Hereditary but creating an original story for horror fans in Blood Beast. Movie Review: The Mothman Legacy (2020)

Serving as a sequel to 2017’s Mothman doc; The Mothman of Point Pleasant (which I reviewed right here), The Mothman Legacy continues filmmaker Seth Breedlove’s deep-dive into the wicked winged world of this creepy cryptid! After a quick recap of Mothman-related events that culminated in the collapse of the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant, West Virginia we delve back into the strange goings-on in that sleepy town and we learn that the lasting effects of the eerie encounters with that creepy creature still resonate throughout the town. Also present is evidence that the paranormal upheaval continues on, and has manifested in ways hitherto undocumented… even in regards to arguably the most famous figure in the entire affair, author John Keel, who’s 1975 novel, The Mothman Prophecies brought the events of Mothman’s reign of terror to the attention of the masses (and was turned into a film in 2002 starring Richard Gere). I’m not going to mince wicked words here; this

Shudder Captures Russian Creature Feature ‘The Superdeep’

Shudder has captured the inspired by true events Russian creature-feature The Superdeep (aka Kolskaya Sverhglubokaya) ahead of its premiere at Sitges. The film, which looks like it’s paying homage to John Carpenter’s The Thing, was written and directed by Roman Karimov, Superdeep stars Milena Radulovic, Maksim Radugin, Nikita Dyuvbanov, and Andrey Trushin. It was produced by Sergey Torchilin, Alexander Kalushkin, Ivan Tarlykov, Konstantin Elkin, and Andrey Lyakhov. In The Superdeep, “The Kola Superdeep Borehole is the most large-scale secret object of the country. In 1984, inexplicable sounds like the screams of many voices were recorded at a depth of more than 12 kilometers. In the wake of these events, the object was closed. A small research team went down below the surface to find out what secret the world’s deepest borehole was hiding. What they have found turned out to be the greatest threat in history. And the future of humanity is in their hands.” The Superdeep is expected to

Blu-ray Review: Warning From Space (1956)

Flying saucers from the planet Paira, which lies on the opposite side of our sun, appear in the skies over Tokyo. The occupants of these craft, a race of human-sized cyclopean starfish, are hellbent on warning mankind about their eminent destruction at the hands of a runaway celestial body, Planet R by name. The big problem with all of this is that humans will doubtless be up to their tits in fear over giant starfish from space and won’t listen to their apocalyptic info, so our friendly buddies from beyond the stars transform one off their own into the likeness of a comely nightclub singer. To that end they attempt to contact a Japanese egghead that’s developed a potent new energy source which they hope to use to construct a big ass bomb that will blow that pesky planet to pieces thus saving Earth and Paira… but before any of that can happen, the scientist is kidnapped by enemy agents

Movie Review: Attack of the Unknown (2020)

Vernon (Richard Grieco) and his top-shelf SWAT crew have managed to bust big bad Miguel ‘Hades’ Aguirre (Robert LaSardo)… but lotsa luck gettin’ his beastly buttocks to the hoosegow, as that task is going to be a wee bit of a royal ass-pain ‘cuz blood-crazed aliens have chosen this day to launch an invasion of Earth! Soon our heroes find themselves playin’ interstellar Assault on Precinct 13 as they plant their asses in a county jail, and while the main impetus may be “Operation: Save Ass”, the fate of the planet may very well be decided this night! Coming from Michael and Sonny Mahal’s Mahal Empire (who’s flicks Party Bus to Hell and Art of the Dead I gave revoltin’ reviews to here and here), Attack of the Unknown succeeds on a number of levels, chief among them the performances on display. Grieco, no stranger to tough as balls hero roles, makes Vernon a strong protagonist you can easily root

Mr. HoleHead’s Warped Dimension Review: Flesh City (2019)

Before I kick of this revoltin’ review, let me state that if you are negatively effected by rapid strobing light and images, you may want to avoid this film. The basics of Flesh City goes as follows: Vyren (Christian Serritiello) meets Loquette (Eva Ferox) in a Berlin industrial nightclub, get a dude named Cyril (Shaun Lawton) right pissed over a video game, then decide it would be a shit hot idea to explore the club’s basement. Is that what kids are into these days? Weirdos… Speaking of weird, there is some sort of magic crystal down there that can open a gate… oh and our heroes are menaced by Prof. Yagov (Arthur Patching) and his fuckin’ robot. Vyren takes a powder from all this lunacy, but there is no way he’s gettin’ out of this nuthouse intact; to wit. he’s beginning to mutate, and if Yagov has his way, the entire city will follow suit! As you may have guessed,

Short Film Review: #NotAllGhosts (2020)

A woman (Amy Ciupek) debates how to eject the toxic dude in her life which isn’t going to be easy considering he’s a rather nasty tempered, abusive, ghost! Filmed with the new Optical Radiance technology that makes film color look vintage without any post-production color correction (read more about the process right here), #NotAllGhosts looks like a million beastly bucks for sure, with bright, eye-popping color… but that isn’t all the visual splendor this bite-sized trip into our beloved horror biz has to offer! You know that ghoulish guest I mentioned up yonder? Well the visual representation of said spirit is a psychotronic fever dream involving, but not limited to, bubbles, possessed televisions, skeletons, smoke, and haunted photographs that reveal private details of how our heroine spends her down time. Speaking of said heroine, Amy Ciupek (who also starred in Distiller, which was directed by this film’s director Andy Schroeder) is pretty damn fantastic as our pseudo-fifties housewife character, and

Blu-ray Review: Split Second (1992)

In a fucked-up, flooded, “future” (the film is set in 2008) London; cigar chomping, black clothing connoisseur and all around shit-kickin’, out of control bad ass Detective Harley Stone (Rutger Hauer) searches for the serial killer that put a murder on his partner three years prior. As Stone investigates further, and the body count rises, he discovers he has a psychic bond with the killer… oh, and that the maniac in question is, in fact, a ten-foot tall alien monster! Comprised of a wet, grimy future, an over-the-top anti-hero, and a slavering alien beast, Split Second would be right at home in the pages of legendary long-running British comic book series 2000 A.D. (home to Judge Dredd), so if you dig on that, you’ll know exactly what to expect from this film, ambiance-wise. Hauer absolutely steals the show as Stone, a man who’s every statement is a clench jawed one-liner or or outrageously macho slogan. He’s a walking cartoon character;
