Movie Review: ‘Come To Daddy’ Is Wonderfully Weird And Warped

Come To Daddy…I was not prepared for the film. From the very beginning, I had a tense, uneasy feeling. Little did I know, that feeling would only grow. Elijah Wood has portrayed a lot of odd characters in the past, but Norval in Come to Daddy has to be the weirdest. In the film, Norval receives a letter from his estranged father that abandoned him and his mother when he was five. The letter asks Norval (Woods) to come for a visit, but as soon as he arrives he’s confronted by a man (Stephen McHattie, “October Faction”) whom he thinks is his father. After a few days of tense interactions and violent outbursts, Norval begins to question his situation. Soon he makes a discovery that leaves him fighting for his life. I have long been a fan of Elijah Wood, he’s a talented actor. However, his character in this movie is just unlikable. Norvel is a pathetic, whiny, wuss, and

Movie Review: ‘The Other Lamb’ Is A Brilliant Lesson In Depravity

I was not prepared when I pressed play and sat down to watch Malgorzata Szumowska’s The Other Lamb. From the get-go, I had a feeling of overwhelming dread as I watched the Sheppard interact with wives and children. You see, his biological daughters are also his future wives (*shudders). His favorite daughter is Selah (Raffey Cassidy), who we watch go from being a child to t a young woman who finds her own strength as she comes to see the truth about her father. I will give you a warning, there are a lot of truly disturbing things in this film including several scenes of animal sacrifice, but the most disturbing is the incest that is present from beginning to end. The only monsters depicted here are the characters themselves, reminding us of the cruelty possible within a family. The Other Lamb is not your common horror film but definitely qualifies for the genre. I’ve seen thousands of horror films

Movie Review: ‘The Invisible Man’

I’ve had high expectations for The Invisible Man since day one. And as I sat in the theater this weekend hearing the audience’s screams around me, it became clear that this brilliant film from writer-director Leigh Whannell is without a doubt making the top of our “Best of 2020” list. Not many movies can make me jump these days, but The Invisible Man had me curled up in my seat holding onto my man’s arm with a death grip. Is it scary? Hell yes! But that’s not all the movie is about. At the heart of the story is Cecilia (Elizabeth Moss), a woman fighting to break free from her psychotic, abusive boyfriend, Adrian (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) who has the means to make her life a living hell. He’s created a suit that turns you invisible and he uses it to alienate her and torture her every way he can. But what he’s not counting on is Cecilia finding the strength

McNeely Reviews ‘Guns Akimbo’ Starring Daniel Radcliffe

Meet Miles, (Daniel Radcliffe) a game programmer who spends way too much time trolling the fans of Skizm, a life or death game that has taken the world by storm. Miles bullies the wrong person and ends up waking up with guns bolted to the palms of his hands. But it gets worse, the guy he pissed off runs Skizm and he’s sent his best player after Miles, the psycho killer Nix (Samara Weaving). And the shit hits the fan! There are so many great things about Guns Akimbo. The nearly constant action is more than enough to make your head explode. The acting is top-notch. Director Jason Lei Howden has created a hardcore action flick that will leave you cheering. When I first heard that Radcliffe was set to star in action flick I was a bit surprised. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been a fan since his Harry Potter days, but Radcliffe has never played a part like

Movie Review: ‘Swallow’ Is Brilliant Film That Makes A Bold Statement

Writer-director Carlo Mirabella-Davis’ Swallow is set to be released on March 6th. I had the opportunity to check it out a little early and I’d like to share my thoughts. Haley Bennett stars as Hunter, a newly-wed woman desperate to be the perfect housewife. The soft-spoken woman makes sure she always looks beautiful, her home spotless, and her inlaws happy. After finding out that she is pregnant she begins to do something odd, eat things that aren’t meant to be eaten, marbles, tacks, batteries, things that are very dangerous. She’s clearly developed Pica, a mental illness. While her cravings for the inedible are front and center in the film, the truth is, deep down she does it to reclaim her power, her control. I felt so sorry for Haley. Her husband and in-laws treat her badly like she is unworthy to be among them. They are less concerned about her than they are about the baby she is carrying like

Blu-ray Review: Mon Mon Mon Monsters

Writer-director Giddens Ko’s Mon Mon Monsters is set to be released this February and I’m here to give you my thoughts on it. Eugenie Liu (“Behind Your Smile”), Pei-Hsin Lin, Carolyn Chen (Attention, Love!), Yu-Kai Deng (Tree in the River), and Kent Tsai (All Because of Love) star. The movie follows a group of teens who catch a man-eating monster and experiment on it. As soon as they figure out that it carries a contagion, they use it as a weapon on anyone the crosses them. These teens are a nightmare. They’re abusive, psychotic, and just plain sadistic assholes throughout the entire movie. There is zero chance that you can find sympathy for them in any way. The “man-eating monsters” in this flick turn out to be the real victims and the humans turn out to be the real monsters. I think we are meant to find pity for one of the boys that have been bullied by the friends

Movie Review: VFW Is Entertaining As Hell

When you hear the names Stephen Lang, William Sadler, Fred Williamson, Martin Kove, David Patrick Kelly, and George Wendt you automatically think that you’re in for a good movie, so when I heard about Joe Begos’ horror flick VFW I was psyched. I eagerly waited for my chance to see it and last night I did. The film follows a group of veterans hanging out at their local VFW when a young woman, “Lizard (Sierra McCormick),” runs in with a bag of drugs stolen from a dealer. The veterans feel obligated to protect the girl and when the dealer’s people come for the drugs it’s an all-out fight for survival, but the group is not going out without a fight. As always Lang doesn’t disappoint. The man must have been a lumberjack in a previous life, he is 68 and swings an ax in like it was what he was meant to do. He is 100% a badass! He plays

Movie Review: ‘Trick’ Is A Treat

WARNING MAJOR SPOILERS It’s December, and if you’re like me you already miss Halloween and the movies it brought to us. I got a taste of our favorite holiday last night while watching RLJE Films’ Halloween set slasher Trick which will arrive on DVD and Digital on December 17th. In the film, Omar Epps (“House”) stars as Detective Mike Denver, an investigator who is obsessed with bringing down “Trick”, a killer who snuffed out the young lives of his classmates at a costume party on Halloween night in 2015. Every year following the attack “copycats” in other towns carry out their own killings. Did Trick survive 3 bullets and a long fall or are there more killers out there? It appears that director Patrick Lussier and writers Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier aim to create a new genre icon. And I think they’ve created a viable story and killer/killers. I could easily see Trick becoming a new interesting franchise. The

Movie Review: Ready Or Not (2019) Is A Bloody Good Thrill Ride

There have been many times that I’ve gotten my hopes up when it comes to big-budget horror movies, only to feel let down. Well, that certainly is not the case with the Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed 2019 horror flick Ready or Not. It left me feeling almost giddy. Few horror films give me that feeling these days. Samara Weaving stars as Grace, a bride eager to please her in-laws on her wedding day, not knowing that her wedding night would become a fight for survival. After the wedding Grace learns from her new husband Alex (Mark O’Brien) that there’s a unique family tradition, the couple must play a game with the family. She laughs as she draws the Hide and Seek card from a dealing box, but it’s no laughing matter. That’s when she learns that if she’s found before dawn, she will be killed. And chaos ensues. And you thought your in-laws were bad. Ready or Not

Movie Review: ‘The Lost Footage of Leah Sullivan’ Should Stay Lost

A young woman sets out to make a documentary for school about a hometown murder. As the mystery unravels, Leah Sullivan, with the help of a local cop, begins to believe that something even more sinister happed to the slain family. She must ask herself, just how a rash of missing people is connected. This movie is the perfect example of found footage gone wrong. Ninty-five percent of the footage is bouncing, swaying, and fast-moving, it actually left me nauseous. What’s worse is that the last few minutes are filmed in pitch black with a single small-beam flashlight lighting the way making it nearly impossible to see anything. In between the action, we see what would have been cut if she had edited her documentary. Those scenes came across forced, fake, and over the top. The cop character, played by Burt Grinstead, is a bit unbelievable. Not many cops would break law after law after law for a stranger. The
