Game Review: ‘Frostpunk: Console Edition’

You’ve heard of Steampunk, Cyberpunk, and you may have heard of Dieselpunk but the question is, are you ready for Frostpunk? The makers of This War of Mine, 11 Bit Studios, gave me the opportunity to play the console edition of their city-building game, Frostpunk. As mentioned, Frostpunk is a city-building game where players take on the role of the “Captain”, the leader of a band of survivors from London in an alternative universe where the world is plunged into a never-ending winter apocalypse. As the leader, you have to establish a city around a giant generator that’s also the only source of heat that will keep your people alive. You have to direct your people where to go and scavenge materials from the frozen wasteland to be used to either build industry, or power the generator. Along the way, you will be asked to make some choices that can affect the morale of your people. If you lose the

It’s A Cold World Out There: Game Review Of ‘Fade To Silence’

THQ Nordic and Black Forest Games have given me the opportunity to try out their new post-apocalyptic RPG, Fade to Silence, a game that takes you to what remains of our world after an unknown otherworldly cataclysm caused it to become a broken frozen wasteland. Does the game deliver salvation or will it leave you in the cold? Let’s find out! You take on the role of Ash, a man struggling to survive with his daughter in what’s left of our world. Ash is the leader of a refuge that serves as the home base for what’s left of his family and other survivors you may come across in the world. Ash is plagued by the voice of a wraith-like entity known simply as the inner voice that taunts him at every turn and appears from time to time. The main focus of the game is to go out in the world and gather supplies in order to survive. The

Killer Robots Are Coming In ‘Generation Zero’

Avalanche Studios and THQ Nordic will be taking us to Sweden in the 1980s in Generation Zero, a first-person shooter that pits you against killer robots. Squad up with three friends or go on by yourself, the game features an open world with a daylight cycle and unpredictable weather. On the fly you will have to pick your battles and how to or not to fight them. The sandbox combat mechanic allows you to fight how you want to as you explore the world and discover the truth behind this mysterious rise of machines. Enemies big and small are constantly stalking around the landscape with the sole purpose to kill humans on sight. What makes these AI enemies in this game interesting is that any damage you cause one of them is permanent, meaning if you damaged one robot and ran away; you will see that particular character model again with the damage even if it’s been days since you

Blu-ray Review: Waterworld (1995)

In the future (or like next Tuesday the way shit is going) the polar ice caps have melted flooding the planet. Folks now live on floating islands of scrap called atolls and hold a belief that a mythical “Dryland” must exist out there…somewhere. Enter The Mariner (Kevin Costner); a dirt trader (yeah…dirt is a commodity because…water reasons…) and gill havin’ mutant to the atoll. Very, very long story short; pirates lead by Deacon (Dennis Hopper) invade the atoll looking to kidnap a girl named Enola (Tina Majorino) who just so happens to have a map to Dryland tattooed on her back, and it’s up to Mariner to protect her while hopefully leading the remnants of humanity to Dryland. I’m not going to tell you that Waterworld is a perfect film; it’s bloated as all fuck, is obviously a vanity project for Costner, and is derivative of the Mad Max franchise to the point of distraction…it also isn’t the Kong-sized piece

Review: Things Are Just Ducky In ‘Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden’!

The creative folks over at The Bearded Ladies and Funcom were nice enough to allow me to review their new real-time strategy game, “Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden”. This story merges tactical strategy, stealth, and turn-based combat along with exploration and scavenging. Without any spoilers, the story takes place in the future after humanity pretty much messed everything up and years later the new generation is picking up the pieces. The world is known as “the zone” where it’s not safe to be, the only safe place is a haven called the “Ark”. A special group of explorers known as Stalkers ventures out into the zone to gather supplies and ensure that a race of marauders known as the ghouls are kept at bay. Now come our heroes, a mutant boar named Borman and a Dux the duck. While looking for a lost group of stalkers they meet up with one of the missing stalkers, Selma, she looks human

A Group Finds Themselves Trapped In The Trailer From Post-Apocalyptic Thriller ‘Ribbons’

BAFTA Award-winning filmmakers Gregor Barclay and Colin Bell have just released the trailer for Ribbons, their exciting post-apocalyptic horror-thriller that follows a small group of four very different characters trapped in a confined space – a windowless bunker that pushes relationships to breaking points, and minds to the brink of madness. Kim Allen (Outlaw King), Robert Jack (In Plain Sight), Kirstin McLean (Taggart) and Kirsty Strain (Outlander, Anna and the Apocalypse) star. Grant McPhee of Tartan Features, Paul Thomas of xFilm and Dave Gillies of Team Candiru produced. Ribbons tells the story of a dinner party gone awry; first through the antagonistic actions of the host, and latterly through the intervention of a nuclear bomb, which detonates in the city beyond and necessitates the end of dinner and the guests’ swift departure downstairs to the host’s panic room/fallout shelter. Our host is revealed to be what’s known as a doomsday-prepper -his subterranean bunker is equipped with everything that he and

Movie Review: Molly (2017)

In a desolate post-apocalyptic world, a woman (who seems to have raided Tank Girl’s and Punky Brewster’s closets simultaneously) named Molly (Julia Batelaan) and her predatory bird hand out ass beatings to anyone stupid enough to fuck with her…she also happens to possess super powers. Also on hand is a bald headed ponce of a warlord that lives in a colony of abandoned off-shore oil rigs, and creates violence-crazed mutants which he makes fight in gladiatorial combat. Of course that chocolate gets all mixed-up in that peanut butter as the warlord hears tale of our super-powered protagonist and realizes she could be good sport for her pits, so he send out his marauders to collect her. Meanwhile Molly befriends an abandoned child whom she must defend while kicking marauder asses up under their hats! The first thing that hits you about Molly is it’s vibrant use of lurid color. The film may be set among the desert sands and scrub

Artsploitation has announced the home video release of Dutch action/Sci-fi thriller Molly. In a barren landscape ravished by war, a super-powered young woman roams the violent post-apocalyptic landscape, armed only with a bow and arrow, to confront the dangers around her. When a sadistic ringmaster who runs an underground fight club hears of her supernatural abilities, he sends his sociopathic marauders to capture her and make her a star attraction in his cage fights.
