Todd Douglas Miller’s documentary “Dinosaur 13”

If this past year at the box office has taught us anything, it is that dinosaurs STILL rule the earth! One could say that dinosaurs are Earth’s first REAL monsters…. “Carnosaur,” “Dinosaur Hell,” “Dinosaur Island,” “Dinosaur Lake,” “Extinction,” are just a few of the horror films that come to mind when I think of these prehistoric beasts… and of course there is the “Jurassic Park,” but a new documentary on Netflix shows you the nightmare one paleontologist, Peter Larson, and his team went through after discovering the largest, most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil in history. The film documents the past 25 years of Larson’s life fighting with local land owners and the United States Government. Larson ends up fighting for the fossil’s freedom and his own. The documentary has a great juxtaposition about it, which really helps tell a sad story and makes you feel for not only the paleontologist, but also for the fossil, Sue. Banshee by Terry Maggert

Banshee by Terry Maggert is a science fiction and fantasy novel I was sent by the author to take a peek at. I intended to review it much sooner, but as you may read in the author’s note below, life is a very fickle thing. Initially what attracted me to this story was the focus on dragons and war. The promise of demons and monsters “sweeping across the planet in a wave of death” had my name written all over it. Who doesn’t love destruction and dragons? Book Description: Cities Fall. A Review of Zack Parker’s “Proxy”

Let me start off by saying “Proxy” is not your standard horror film, however, it is an extremely violent, disturbing thriller, that leads horror viewers into a new subgenera of horror films. I warn ALL viewers that this film is EXTREMELY violent, some of this violence is present in the first 5 minutes of the film, before the main title even pops up on screen. “Proxy” centers around the life of 3 individuals who have all suffered a loss, in one way or another. There are a lot of new faces in this film, however there is one very familiar face to horror fans, Kristina Klebe, better known as Rob Zombie’s Lynda in his version of “Halloween.” The films main star Alexia Rasmussen (Esther Woodhouse) does a great job at playing a typical loner, who when asked who her best friend is, she states, “her fish.” The film is a little artsy, but absolutely beautiful. A review of Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno

Before I go into how much I love The Green Inferno, let me start by saying the first 20 – 30 minutes wasn’t great, mainly because our main character Justine (Lorenza Izzo) has an atrocious roommate Kaycee (Sky Ferreira), whose 1990’s grunge, forced, hipster dialogue was one of the most horrific things in this film. I realize that the films director, Eli Roth, was going for with this, but it is either some of the worst acting I have ever seen or the best, Ferreira deserves an Oscar! I have seen this film 3 times and still can not decide what side of the fence I am on. Now that the worst part of the film is out of the way, let’s get to the good stuff! I personally believe this is Roth’s best film! Shooting 4k (digital) along with the films soundtrack really helps bring the jungle to life and ultimately the fear that our characters feel. Seraphim Song by Pandie Suicide – Book Announcement

I interviewed Suicide Girl, model, actress, and now published author Pandie Suicide about her short film Massacre for Gores Truly a few weeks ago. When she found out that I did book reviews for Zombie Apocalypse Defense Force, she wanted to hop on board and send me a copy of her debut novel Seraphim Song to review! She also was kind enough to send along a short story called Vampire Summer which is also available on Amazon. Double win! The book absolutely sounds like something I would have written as a teenager (obsession with mythology – check, obsession with music icons – check), so the idea that this is something Pandie wrote as a teen seems realistic. A review of Terror Films “Trace”

Terror Films presents “Trace,” a supernatural thriller that follows a group of friends experimenting with a specific type of Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP). After trying to make contact with a sprite at a party, the friends get a lot more than they bargained for… Soon the friends realize that they have opened a door to a realm that the living were never meant to see. Now, they are in a race against time to destroy the transmission in order to save themselves and prevent a demon from entering our world. ‘Trace” stars Nick Fink, August Roads, Jesse Pepe, Samantha Lee, Maddie McGuire, Jerod Meagher, Jeremiah Benjamin, Mike Capozzi and Herion Mustafaraj, and the cast is great! From the first time we see the large group of friends, we instantly get a sense of who these characters are simply by their “look” and attitude. Eli Roth’s Psychosexual Thriller, “Knock Knock”

It has been over seven years since the world has seen a directorial feature from horror director Eli Roth… However, in 2015 Roth released TWO, yes TWO, feature length films, “The Green Inferno” and “Knock Knock.” This review is about the later of the two. “Knock Knock” centers around a devoted husband, Evan Webber, played by Keanu Reeves, who just so happens to be home alone when two beautiful young woman unexpectedly show up on his doorstep. What sounds like a relaxing weekend for Evan, turns into a nightmare pretty quickly. Even though Reeves has some lackluster moments, I will say that pacing is beautiful and not once in the film are you kept waiting. Just 15 minutes into the film and we have already met the two leading ladies. Of all the modern day directors to use digital cinematography, Roth has somehow mastered it. When We Were Human by Kate L. Mary is one of those books that I keep meaning to buy, but just haven’t yet. Kate L. Mary is the author of the Broken World series, which I love, and beyond that When We Were Human just was a Silver Medalist for the 2015 Moonbeam Chilldren’s Book Award for YA Fantasy/Science Fiction. Now, to add to that, it’s on sale! The book is typically $3.99, but to celebrate her big award win she has opted to drop the price to $0.99 from now Nov 12-Nov 18th. I’m definitely going to pounce on this offer before it goes away. While the title isn’t technically horror, the premise still reads like something out of a horror movie, so it sounds like it’s definitely worth the investment. Video Game Review: Outlast

Happy Halloween everyone! One of my favorite holidays personally. Free candy, awesome costumes and marathons of horror movies and games. This entire month I’ve been playing horror games non-stop and I’m going to review the 4 games I played. I was gonna review “Alien: Isolation” this week but since the sequel was just announced so I’m gonna review 2013’s surprise hit “Outlast”. “Outlast” was released to PC in 2013 and came out to great success both financially and critically, even getting better reviews then its competition “Amnesia”. Do to “Outlast”s success Canadian developer Red Barrels ported it to new-gen consoles bringing “Outlast” to a whole new audience and making it a mainstay series. So what is “Outlast” about? In “Outlast” you play as Miles Upshur, a freelance photojournalist who was tipped off by a whistle blower about radical experiments being performed on the mental patients at “Mount Massive Asylum” in Colorado and the world must know what is happening. Nightscape: Cynopolis by David Edwards

Being a horror reviewer is difficult, sometimes. I get emails multiple times a day with requests for me to review movies, books, shows… You name it, people are trying to get my eyes on it. Typically I can skim across these emails and not give them too much thought. (Needless to say, most don’t catch my eye. My reading/watching queue is way too long!) However, when I got the email last month regarding the Worldwind Book Tour for Nightscape: Cynopolis, I knew I had to pounce. Everything about this premise was unique, and I’ve always loved Egyptian mythology (where else does ones mind go when they read the phrase ‘jackal headed beasts’? Everything about this book screamed ‘must read’ and I knew I had to see if it would live up to the (arguably self-generated) hype. Book Description: Detroit’s eastside has seen its share of horrors.
