Review: Image Comics’ “Outcast # 10”

Outcast follows Kyle Barnes, a man who has been tormented by demonic possession his whole life. He has been labeled an “outcast” by the demons, although he is unsure what that means. He even has a newfound ability to “pull” demons out of others. In his quest to find answers and make sense of the world around him he uncovers a more sinister plot. This issue begins right where the last left off with Kyle and Reverend Anderson having just exorcised a demon from a girl named Sherry. Kyle is troubled because the girl is now left in a catatonic state just as his own mother was. He is starting to question his faith and wonders if they both would’ve been better off before he had intervened. Review: SpellBound Comics’ “Year of the Goat #1”

Question: What is black and white and red all over? Answer: A kick-ass comic about the goatpocalypse! 2015 is the Year of the Goat according to the Chinese Zodiac and it may just be right. The night that I recieved a copy of this book to review, a trending hashtag on Twitter was #AddGoatRuinAQuote. You may be able to ruin a quote by adding a goat, but if you add a whole bunch of goats to a horror/slasher comic about demonic possession, then you can’t go wrong. This book is proof of that. Now, I must admit that this book isn’t for everyone. Of course, I only say that because it is intended for mature audiences only. The story starts off on a farm in the southern United States, when a black bird lands and seems to whisper into the ear of a goat. Zombie Fallout by Mark Tufo

Zombie Fallout by Mark Tufo is a highly rated book which begins an 8 volume series of the same name. The series has 4.4 of 5 stars, so I went in expecting good things. This is what I found… Book Description: It was a flu season like no other. With the H1N1 virus running rampant throughout the country, people lined up in droves to try and attain one of the coveted vaccines. What was not known was the effect this largely untested, rushed to market, inoculation was to have on the unsuspecting throngs. Within days, feverish folk throughout the country convulsed, collapsed, and died, only to be reborn. With a taste for brains, blood, and bodies, these modern-day zombies scoured the lands for their next meal. Comic Book Review for Dark Horse Comics’ Midnight Society: The Black Lake #1

I just picked up Dark Horse Comics’ Midnight Society: The Black Lake #1 and after reading this review it should be evident that you should too. This book is the brainchild of Drew Edward Johnson who serves as the creator, writer, and artist. It also features Lizzy John as the colorist and the lettering of Steve Dutro. It is the first part of a four part miniseries and debuted on June 10th 2015. Johnson has skillfully combined the elements of steampunk, action-adventure, horror, and mystery into a tale that is hard to put down. The mixture is a wonderful concoction with flavors reminiscent of The Rocketeer, Indiana Jones, Hellboy, B.P.R.D. and the like. It pays homage to a lot of different genres and does it well. That and the name alone reminds me of my favorite Nickelodeon show, Are You Afraid of the Dark?. The masterful storytelling is complemented and furthered along with out of this world artwork, pun intended.

Mutation by Nerys Wheatley

Mutation by Nerys Wheatley is the first book in the Twenty-Five Percent series which takes a completely different take on what we think of as a zombie apocalypse narrative. Zombies aren’t just brain eating death machines, there are other ways that the virus can influence their physiology and behavior. Those who survive infection by zombies are referred to as being a “White-Eye” based on their discolored eyes and are marked for life as second class citizens despite their improved abilities. I was sent a copy of the book to check out, and my findings are below. Note: This is a shorter review than my usual because I am running behind with book reviews on account of the Splatterpunk Anthology I’m working on putting together. Video Game Review: Dying Light

How do you improve upon the zombie apocalypse? Add parkour! “Dying Light” released on January 27th 2015 is now available on Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC computers is the newest installment in Tech Land’s open-world Role Playing zombie game. First we got “Dead Island” back in 2011, while that was mediocre it had potential. We later then got “Dead Island: Riptide” and “Escape Dead Island” both were poop, so of course my mind was going into this was expecting mediocrity when actually I was very surprised and honestly “Dying Light” has probably been the best game I’ve played this year! “Dying Light” has you playing as GRE Operative Kyle Crane who is sent into the overrun city of “Harran”. An unfortunate event has taken place resulting in the entire city being engulfed in flame and killer zombies with an extremely unpleasant mutation. Your mission? recover an important file that can lead to a cure and end the zombie virus

Love and Decay Vol 1, Season 1 by Rachel Higginson

Love and Decay Volume #1 (Episodes 1-6 of the first season) by Rachel Higginson is a book I have been meaning to read for a while. It was recommended to me months ago by a reader during Women in Horror month and I’m just now getting the chance to circle back around to it. As of this post, the book is available for free on Kindle. (I seem to plug kindle a lot, but it’s what I use and I love the fact that I can read books online or on my cell phone with the FREE Kindle Reading App. If you like another medium feel free to recommend it in the comments or to me on Twitter!) Damn The Dead by Phillip Tomaso

Phillip Tomasso is a fairly prolific author, especially in horror/supernatural categories. I added Damn the Dead to my reading queue months ago, and am just getting around to reading it. Evidently, although it is his new Arcadia series, it is a continuation in the sense that one of the main characters is from his Vaccination trilogy. That book is also on my to read list, but as I had scheduled Damn the Dead for this week it appears we’ll be looking at just how well this book stands apart from its predecessor. Synopsis: *Damn The Dead marks the beginning of an exciting new stand-alone series from Phillip Tomasso and takes place some 3 years after the conclusion of the best-selling Vaccination Trilogy. Flesh Without Soul by Pochassic

Flesh Without Soul is the debut novel of author Pochassic. The book is different than many of the books I’ve reviewed here on ZADF because unlike many in our beloved sub-genre of zombie fiction, this novel is complete. It doesn’t attempt to jump start a series, it’s a stand alone story which is incredibly unique. Book Description: What would you do to save the world? Eliminate racism? End Religious intolerance?
