Political Horror ‘La Llorona’ Out Today On Shudder

Director Jayro Bustamante‘s combines a Latin American fable as a metaphor for Latin American struggles in La Llorona, not to be confused with Michael Chaves’ 2019 movie The Curse of La Llorona. Written by Bustamante and Lisandro Sánchez, the film centers on an indignant retired general Enrique who finally faces trial for the genocidal massacre of thousands of Mayans decades ago. As a horde of angry protestors threatens to invade their opulent home, the women of the house—his haughty wife, conflicted daughter, and precocious granddaughter—weigh their responsibility to shield the erratic, senile Enrique against the devastating truths being publicly revealed and the increasing sense that a wrathful supernatural force is targeting them for his crimes. Meanwhile, much of the family’s domestic staff flee, leaving only loyal housekeeper Valeriana until a mysterious young Indigenous maid arrives. María Mercedes Coroy, Margarita Kénefic, Sabrina De La Hoz, and Julio Diaz star in La Llorona, produced by Jayro Bustamante, Gustavo Matheu, Georges Renand, and

Movie Review: La Llorona

In Guatemalan/French co-production La Llorona, director Jayro Bustamante offers up a historical and political spin on the South American legend of the titular “Weeping Woman” ghost. The result is an eerie film that delivers the supernatural goods along with topical drama. Ailing, aged military dictator General Enrique Monteverde (Julio Diaz) is confined to his home after a court decision that finds him guilty of war crimes against the indigeous Kaqchikel people is overturned by his cronies. Guatemalan citizens including Kaqchikel people protest outside his mansion around the clock. Stuck inside with the General are his embittered, witchcraft-practicing wife Carmen (Margarita Kenéfic); their physician daughter Natalia (Sabrina De La Hoz); her young daughter Sara (Ayla-Elea Hurtado); and head servant Valeríana (María Telón). After one night when the General hears a woman wailing and investigates with a gun in hand, all of the staff members except Valeríana resign in fear. A new servant named Alma (María Mercedes Coroy) is hired, and from

Movie Review: The Pool (2018)

Day (Theeradej Wongpuapan) awakes to find himself trapped in a titanic empty pool with a gator nibbling on his leg. How did he end up in this nightmare scenario. well it tangentially involves a woman in clown makeup sitting on a fancy-ass couch underwater… as these things so often do. Long story short, Day (and his puppy) just completed work on a film set at the luxurious, but abandoned, pool mentioned above… and hangs around for a private swim the next day… a swim that finds him goofing off a bit too much, so that when the water drains a bit he is unable to exit the pool. This is bad news on a number of levels, as Day is unable to reach the insulin he needs to live, and when his cellphone falls in the water, he is unable to call for help. To make matters even worse, his girlfriend Koi (Ratnamon Ratchiratham) arrives, and gets seriously injured before
