Review: Confessional

The central conceit of director Brad T. Gottfred’s Confessional is an updated, low-budget approach to the old chestnut of a mysterious host inviting people to a certain location and having them crack under pressure, or killing them — think The Beast Must Die (1974), The Cat and the Canary (1939), or Ten Little Indians (1965). In the case of Confessional, a group of college students come to a specially built booth that records their deepest, darkest secrets, to which they have been invited by an unknown host after the death of two mutually known fellow students. The film is an exercise that stays true to its technique, but it gets convoluted and has the issue of not presenting any characters for viewers to truly get solidly behind. Film student Amelia Lincoln (Mia Xitlali) and star swimmer Zach Turner (Brandon Larracuente) both die puzzling deaths. Seven students from their university are blackmailed by an unknown person into revealing what they know

Movie Review: ‘Z’ Is The Horror Movie Fans Deserve

Let’s face it when a movie gets a lot of hype ahead of its release we usually find ourselves left disappointed. That is not the case with writer-director Brandon Christenson and co-writer Colin Minihan’s spooky AF film Z. I was not prepared for this frightening flick. I was expecting a decent movie, but Z is so much more. I’ve been a horror fan for so long that I’ve become pretty jaded, but Z reminded me of why I fell in love with the horror genre in the first place. As horror fans, we are always in search of the next high, that moment when we feel like our heart will jump out of our chest, the times when we flinch in fear and are left with thoughts of a story swimming around in our heads. Z does that. The film follows a family whose son has become dangerous. He blames everything on his invisible friend Z, but it doesn’t take

Movie Review: Porno (2019)

It’s 1992 and it’s Jesus o’ clock at a small town movie house owned by religious fanatic Mr. Pike (Bill Phillips). But it’s all in a days work for Chastity (Jillian Mueller), projectionist Heavy Metal Jeff (Robbie Tann), and ushers Abe (Evan Daves), Todd (Larry Saperstein), and Ricky (Glenn Stott)… and after hours they are rewarded with watching a free flick, but the current hits of the day are quickly forgotten once a freak-ass hobo breaks into the joint leading them to discover a stash of porn. Before you can say missionary position, the gang watches one of the skin-flicks and unleashes the succubus Lilith (Katelyn Pearce). Sex and violence ensue. Produced on a lower budget with an inexperienced cast, Porno manages to be funny, shocking, and surprisingly touching. Admittedly, things get off to a dicey start though as our pious teens are grating from the get-go, but they calm their tits soon enough… especially after Lilith makes the scene

Hit Foreign Horror Film ‘Impetigore’ Premiering On Shudder

Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, announced today that it has acquired all rights in its territories to writer-director Joko Anwar’s hit horror film Impetigore (aka Perempuan Tanah Jahanam) which had its international premiere at Sundance after a smash run in Anwar’s home country of Indonesia, where it was the fifth highest-grossing release of 2019. Sink Your Teeth Into The Zombie Movie ‘Blood Quantum’ Now Streaming On Shudder

From writer-director Jeff Barnaby comes Blood Quantum, which has just been released on Shudder. The dead are coming back to life outside the isolated Mi’gmaq reserve of Red Crow, except for its Indigenous inhabitants who are immune to the zombie plague. Traylor (Greyeyes), the tribal sheriff, must protect his son’s pregnant girlfriend, apocalyptic refugees, and reserve riffraff from the hordes of walking white corpses. “Jeff Barnaby is a First Nations filmmaker born on the Mi’gmaq reserve, his country. Quantum and his debut feature, the cult-hit, take place. He is the writer, director, editor, and composer of Blood Quantum, which opened TIFF’s Midnight Madness program in 2019 to both audience and critical acclaim. His films frequently cast from within the Indigenous community and paint a stark and scathing portrait of post-colonial Indigenous life and culture – in this case, painting it in blood.” Blood Quantum is produced by Quebec-based production company Prospector Films as well as John Christou & Robert Vroom,

Movie Review: Blood Quantum (2019)

Back ’round 1981, down on the Mi’gmaq tribe’s home turf of Red Crow, animals keep coming back from the dead. Enter: Sheriff Traylor (Michael Greyeyes) who has to deal with the ‘sitch first hand when he is tasked with putting a bullet into the pooch belonging to his ex-wife Joss (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers)… which of course turns zombie right quick! Not content to just resurrect various and sundry animal types, this mysterious whatever soon has the same effect on the local Caucasian occasion (the natives are immune to the transformation). This causes an extra layer of static as our hero’s son Joseph (Forrest Goodluck) has a preggo white old lady named Charlie (Olivia Scriven). Time passes and the reservation becomes a fortified, post-apocalyptic style stronghold… but the hungry dead are definitely at their doorstep, and they want in like a mother fucker! Naturally various members of the tribe splinter and form their own allegiance, lead by a true psycho named Lysol
