Jordan Peele (Get Out) is ready to chant Candyman…Candyman…That’s right, the brilliant mind that brought us Get Out is remaking the classic.
MGM has announced that they are partnering with Peele’s Monkeypaw Production and Win Rosenfeld to produce the re-imagining of Candyman, inspired by Clive Barker’s short story The Forbidden. Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) is set to direct from the screenplay penned by Peele and Rosenfeld.
Described as a “spiritual sequel” the film returns to the same neighborhood where the legend began. The film will take place in the now gentrified area in Chicago that has replaced the housing projects known as Cabrini-Green.
There is no word yet if Tony Todd will reprise his role as Candyman. MGM will produce as well as finance the film with Universal distributing.
Candyman is set to begin production in 2019 and will open in theaters on June 12, 2020. In the meantime, check out the original trailer.
