Earlier this year we reported that Aquaman actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has joined the cast of director Nia DaCosta‘s “spiritual sequel” to the Candyman franchise. At the time we were led to believe that he would be taking over the role of Candyman originally played by Tony Todd. But that may not be true after all. DaCosta recently clarified Mateen’s role during a conversation with Collider.
Well, it’s been slightly misreported,” DaCosta said. “I can’t say what’s happening in the film because we want it to be a surprise, but he’s not replacing Tony Todd. That’s been reported, and I was just like, ‘I don’t know what to say about this. This is not right.”
At the moment we have no clue what’s going to happen in the film, but we’re glad to hear that Tony Todd has not been replaced. So that leaves the question of who will Yahya Abdul-Mateen II play?
Here’s what we do know:
Teyonah Parris has joined the cast and will play the girlfriend of an art dealer obsessed with the legend of Candyman.
The movie will return to the neighborhood where the legend began, where Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.
Jordan Peele wrote the script along with Win Rosenfeld and will produce MGM’s Candyman which set to open in theaters on June 12, 2020.
