In January, we reported that after over two decades, the sequel 28 Years Later is finally on its way. There has been an update. THR is reporting that Sony Pictures has won the bidding war for 28 Years Later, part of a brand new trilogy reviving the post-apocalyptic chills of the 2002 classic, according to THR. The original’s visionary director, Danny Boyle, returns to helm the project, reuniting with screenwriter Alex Garland.

More Rage is Coming:

This isn’t just a single sequel; expect a full-fledged trilogy, with each installment boasting a budget of $75 million. Joining Boyle and Garland as producers are Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice, who was previously head of Fox Searchlight Pictures, the original film’s distributor.

Original Star May Return:

While casting remains largely under wraps, the original film’s star, Cillian Murphy, is onboard as an executive producer, and discussions are underway for him to reprise his iconic role as Jim, the lone survivor navigating the zombie-infested world. He’s currently garnering awards buzz for his role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, coming to Peacock this February, adding extra star power to the project.

A Franchise Reinvigorated:

28 Days Later revitalized the zombie genre with its gritty portrayal of a fast-spreading rage virus and its devastating aftermath. The film earned over $82 million worldwide and spawned the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, though Boyle and Garland weren’t directly involved in that production.

From TV to Thrillers:

Both Boyle and Garland have been busy in recent years: Boyle directed the acclaimed Sex Pistols miniseries “Pistol” for FX, while Garland helmed the psychological horror film Men and is gearing up for the release of the action thriller Civil War starring Kirsten Dunst.

Anticipation Mounts:

With the original team assembled and a promising trilogy on the horizon, 28 Years Later is already generating significant buzz among horror fans. The blend of established talent, a proven franchise, and a revitalized story ensures we’re in for a thrilling return to the post-apocalyptic world. Keep an eye out for further casting and release date announcements as this terrifying adventure unfolds.
