Martin Scorsese has been a supporter of the horror genre for as long as he’s had those iconic eyebrows. So, the prospect of him finally delivering a full-blown horror flick, What Happens at Night, is enough to give any cinephile chills.
Frequent muse Leonardo DiCaprio is leading a powerhouse cast. That includes Jennifer Lawrence, Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, and Jared Harris. We aren’t just looking at a movie; we’re looking at a recipe for high-altitude cinematic gold.
The Source Material
First announced in 2023, the project is an adaptation of Peter Cameron’s 2020 gothic mystery novel. The story follows a couple (DiCaprio and Lawrence) who travel to a nameless, frozen Balkan country to adopt a child. The stakes are already sky-high. The wife is battling terminal cancer, and the trip is a last-ditch effort to salvage their crumbling marriage.
Upon arrival, they check into the Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel. It’s a cavernous, eerily establishment that makes the Overlook look like a Holiday Inn. The lobby is populated by a “debauched businessman” and a mysterious faith healer, creating an atmosphere where nothing—not even their own identities—is quite what it seems.
The Creative Dream Team
As if Scorsese and Leo weren’t enough to sell tickets, the production has some serious heavy hitters behind the curtain:
In a move that set the internet on fire, it was reported that Paul Thomas Anderson stepped in to rewrite the screenplay. Speculation suggests the film will revisit the psychological dread of Shutter Island but lean harder into the “ghost story” mold.
DiCaprio recently hinted that Scorsese has the duo studying Japanese ghost films and Hitchcock’s Vertigo to nail the film’s specific brand of spectral paranoia.
Production & Release
Filming is currently underway, and a haunting first-look image has already surfaced, showing Leo and Lawrence hand in hand on a frost-covered rural path.
Like their previous collaboration, Killers of the Flower Moon, this is an Apple co-production. While Apple loves its streaming numbers, a project of this pedigree is guaranteed a healthy theatrical window. After all, who wants to watch a Scorsese-directed, PTA-scripted horror masterpiece on a tablet?
Expected Arrival: While no date is set, a late 2027 release—smack in the middle of awards season—is the safest bet.
The Scorsese Side-Quest
If you can’t wait until 2027 for your Marty fix, don’t forget that his other major genre project is the “Cape Fear“ series. The adaptation co-produced with Steven Spielberg—is set to premiere on June 5. It’s a good year to be a fan of things that go bump in the night.
What Happens at Night is shaping up to be the most atmospheric horror event of the decade. Stay frosty.
