If Broken Bird isn’t on your horror radar yet, it’s time to recalibrate your sensors after buzzing through London’s FrightFest. Broken Bird snagged an Emerging Raven nomination at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. This 2024 psychological horror is finally spreading its dark wings on Digital and VOD.
A Very Bad Day at the Office
Rebecca Calder (The Conjuring: Last Rites) steps into the sensible shoes of a deeply lonely mortician. Now, you’d think a professional corpse-wrangler wouldn’t be easily rattled. But she is shocked by the contents of the body bag on her slab.
Her colleague, on the other hand? Entirely unfazed. Just another day, another unfortunate soul whose internal organs have decided to become external organs following a nasty accident.
From Short Film to Fresh Nightmare
Marking the feature directorial debut of Joanne Mitchell, Broken Bird is expanded from Mitchell’s original short film, Sybil. Mitchell co-wrote the script alongside Dominic Brunt and Tracey Sheals. The stellar cast also includes James Fleet (The Devil’s Hour), Sacharissa Claxton (Silo), Jay Taylor, and Jelena Moore.
For those who like their horror with a side of existential dread, the official synopsis promises a beautifully twisted ride: “In Broken Bird, a lonely mortician with a poetic soul searches for love and belonging—but as grief and desire collide, her need for connection takes a disturbingly intimate turn.”
This UK import arrives stateside with some serious wind beneath its wings. Following a triumphant festival run, the movie managed a feat rarer than a surviving final girl: it currently boasts a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Joanne Mitchell has crafted a haunting and emotionally resonant film that stays with you long after the credits roll,” says Holly Levow, Executive Lead and Co-Founder of Catalyst Studios. Levow produces the film alongside Zoe Stewart, Mark Pennell, and Paul Kampf.
