Curry Barker is not slowing down. His massive debut hit, Obsession, shattered box office records. Now, his third feature film is officially locked in.
Variety reported that the untitled movie landed at Universal Film Group. Horror titans Blumhouse and Atomic Monster are producing the project. And Spooky Pictures and Divide/Conquer are also on board.
Barker will write, direct, and produce the film. The plot is based on his original pitch. However, all specific story details are currently tightly under wraps, Variety reports.
A Box Office Juggernaut
Obsession is officially the highest-grossing release ever for Focus Features. The blockbuster has so far brought in over $300 miion worldwide. In other words, it’s a massive hit.
Horror bosses Jason Blum and James Wan praised Barker’s unique vision. They noted that he creates wholly original films that connect with massive audiences.
“With ‘Obsession,’ Curry did what only a handful of filmmakers manage in a generation: he made something wholly original that connected with a massive audience, and that connection is what we care about most. The best filmmakers can work anywhere, and we are proud to have a growing slate with Curry. Getting to put this project in front of the fans his work speaks to is the whole reason we do this,” said Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s James Wan and Jason Blum in a joint statement.
NBCUniversal chairman Donna Langley also celebrated the director. She stated that Barker is actively redefining what is possible in modern cinema.
“Curry Barker has an exceptional ability to tap into the cultural zeitgeist, pairing an innate instinct for what resonates with audiences with extraordinary filmmaking prowess,” said NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley. “Barker’s talent is redefining what’s possible and we’re thrilled to continue our partnership with him.”
What Is Coming Next?
Barker’s highly anticipated second film, Anything but Ghosts, is currently in post-production. Focus Features and Blumhouse are handling the release.
Barker co-wrote, directed, and stars in the upcoming movie. The star-studded cast features Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard. Imagine two absolutely shameless con artist ghost hunters. They make a living swindling single dads and gullible older women. They are actually fantastic at the grift, utilizing special rigs to make tables shake and lights flicker. They put on a spectacular fake show. That is, until they accidentally cross paths with a very real, very dangerous dark entity.
