To save him, they had to damn him. Talk about a tough break for Riverdale’s favorite freckled quarterback. Oni Press—the award-hoarding home of groundbreaking graphic novels—and Archie Comic Publications are officially joining forces to celebrate 85 years of America’s most wholesome teenage icon by dragging him straight into the abyss. Launching out of Oni’s massive new line of star-studded Archie titles, ARCHIE IN HELL #1 arrives this November.
Behind the Madness
Writer Patrick Horvath (Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees) and artist Tyler Crook (Harrow County) are teaming up to carve a blood-stained trail from Riverdale’s dark origins straight to its modern streets.
Cults and Demon Lords
So, it turns out Riverdale’s biggest secret isn’t whatever Jughead eats to maintain his metabolism. The town has been quietly infested by an ancient cult set on unleashing a demon lord into our world. To complete a century-long ritual, they need one final, wholesome sacrifice: hometown football golden boy Archie Andrews. However, the cult’s fatal mistake? Forgetting that actual witches walk these same streets. When local coven meets ancient cult, the resulting splash zone triggers cosmic consequences that leave young Archie damned to a fate worse than Hell’s inner circle. Bound by a terrible curse, and still somehow late for third-period algebra, Archie is about to learn that things can always go from bad to downright diabolical.
Horvath admits the project came together like a match made in a dark alter space. He calls it the perfect time to write a script specifically for Crook, an artist hero of his. For Crook, the allure was simple: mixing classic teenage melodrama with horror and historical period detail gave him something delightfully meaty to sink his teeth into.
Coming this Fall
When ARCHIE IN HELL #1 sends the boy next door six feet under this November, it will come wrapped in a lineup of terrifyingly good covers from Crook, Horvath, Paul Azaceta, Jesse Lonergan, Kano, Dan Parent, Mirka Andolfo, and Mahmud Asrar.
Naturally, the milestone publication madness doesn’t start in the underworld.
The chaos kicks off in September with ARCHIE #1, courtesy of Edgar Award winner Ben H. Winters and Eisner Award winner Fábio Moon, with covers by Stuart Immonen. Experience the charm and mystery of Riverdale through Archie’s eyes as a local film festival triggers an enigmatic paradox that only Jughead Jones can untangle. Packed with puzzles, pin-ups, and enough narrative twists to cure your postmodern malaise, it’s the ultimate refresh for a classic brand.
October brings the magic back with SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH #1 by Corinna Bechko and Kano. Balancing high school with fresh magical birthrights is tough enough. Still, when her familiar Salem dumps a mythical trickster on her literal doorstep right before Halloween, Sabrina has to stop her two worlds from smashing together like busted pumpkins.
You can track the ongoing apocalypse and incoming releases by following Oni Press and Archie Comics across Bluesky, Facebook, and Instagram.
