Series Review: Mike Flanagan's "Carrie" is a Masterpiece

Fans of Mike Flanagan‘s work just received some incredibly exciting news. Amazon Prime Video has officially renewed his hit television series. Variety confirms that the updated adaptation of Stephen King’s “Carrie” will return for season two, reportedly venturing far beyond the original novel.

A Modern Horror Story

The series follows a misfit high-schooler named Carrie White. Summer H. Howell delivers a breakout performance in this iconic role. Samantha Sloyan portrays her fiercely protective mother, Margaret. At first, Carrie spends her entire life safely hidden indoors. However, her father’s sudden death changes her world. She is abruptly thrust into a cruel, unforgiving public high school. Soon after, she must navigate a devastating, viral bullying scandal. This cruel harassment eventually tears violently through her local community as her powers emerge.

According to Peter Friedlander, the show boasts immense global strength. He currently heads global television at Amazon MGM Studios. He notes its massive popularity among young adults and international audiences. Female viewers are also tuning in heavily to the supernatural series. Therefore, this widespread success highlights the enduring power of King’s story. It also signals that Flanagan’s creative reimagining possesses real depth.

“‘Carrie’ is connecting with both longtime Stephen King fans and a new generation altogether — including young adults and international audiences, with particular strength among female viewers,”Peter Friedlander stated “It speaks to the enduring power of this story and signals that Mike Flanagan’s reimagining of the iconic IP has real breadth. We’re excited by where he and Stephen plan to take the story.”

Expanding the Narrative

Showrunner Mike Flanagan also expressed his profound gratitude and excitement. He noted that audiences have loved Carrie’s story for fifty years. From the beginning, he imagined going far beyond the infamous prom. Consequently, he is grateful for Stephen King’s ongoing trust and support. Ultimately, Flanagan cannot wait to explore what comes next for Carrie.

“For 50 years, audiences have known and gravitated to Carrie White’s story. From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom, and I’m incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and support in exploring what comes next,” said Flanagan.

In my glowing review of the series, which I called a “masterpiece,” I pointed out characters and Easter eggs that connect the story to an expanded King universe, including links to The Institute, Christine, and Flanagan’s planned adaptation of The Dark Towers. And that seems to be exactly what’s happening. I am totally here for it.

Stephen King Approves

Stephen King is equally enthusiastic about the show’s upcoming direction. King confidently said the continuation will be thrilling. Both creators are truly excited to push the boundaries of horror.

“I can’t wait for audiences to get to see what’s down the road for Carrie White. Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what comes next. It’s bound to be thrilling,” Variety quoted King as saying.
