Back in June, we last updated you on the film Hell’s Half Acre. Today, we have the first teaser trailer. The atmospheric survival thriller is a dark period piece inspired by the harrowing true story of the Bloody Benders, known as America’s first recorded serial killer family; the mysterious clan operated in post-Civil War Kansas. Adapted from Nichol Nicastro’s acclaimed novel, the story blends brutal historical realism with intense psychological suspense. Fans of grim frontier storytelling can expect a gripping, bloody journey into American history.

Uncovering the Bloody Bender Legacy

The narrative follows a sinister family running a remote store and cabin stop along the Osage Trail in 1873. Mysterious beauty Kate Bender leads the group, using her charm to lure unsuspecting travelers into lethal traps. Over fifteen men disappeared near the prairie property before local authorities uncovered buried human remains on the land. However, the killers vanished into the vast Western wilderness before law enforcement could apprehend them. As a result, the unsolved disappearance remains one of the most enduring mysteries in American true crime history.

Cult Legends and Rising Stars Lead the Ensemble

Cult horror icon Bill Moseley stars alongside veteran Western actor Grainger Hines. Award-winning performers Hannah Beck and Craig Cartwright also star. Newcomer JoHannah James plays the cold, calculating antiheroine Kate Bender. Meanwhile, supporting actors Kristin Samuelson, Josh Bloom, and Christophe Kahler complete the sinister Bender household.

Award-Winning Short Earns Early Praise

Director Nicholas Nicastro helms the project, adapting his own bestselling book for the big screen. Previously, his proof-of-concept short film Hell’s Half-Acre: Sojourn also swept top honors across the global indie film festival circuit—earning major awards at the LA Indie Shorts Festival, Toronto Indie Shorts, and PanicFest. As a result, industry insiders anticipate high production values and exceptional atmospheric direction for the feature-length adaptation.

“When their crimes were discovered in 1873, they shocked the nation,” says Nicholas Nicastro. “Nobody knows if the Benders were actually related, but they would take visitors along the Osage Trail into their remote cabin/store … and kill them.” He continued, “The Bender case is compelling not only in its depravity, but in its female focus. The Benders were a ‘family’ led by an intelligent, outspoken woman, Kate. To this day, it is one of only a few cases of serial murder with a woman at its center.”

Scheduled for Release Next Year

Production crews are wrapping up principal photography across desert locations near Tucson, central Kansas, and Virginia. Primetime Emmy nominee Marc Henry Johnson serves as lead producer alongside award-winning cinematographer Travis LaBella. Together, the creative team aims to deliver a visually striking, macabre aesthetic to the vast Midwestern landscape. Distributing partners plan to release the full-length movie domestically and internationally in 2027.
