Tim Burton’s 1993 film ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ has long been the subject of debate among fans who have tried to figure out if the stop-motion film is a Halloween movie or if it’s actually a Christmas movie. Finally we have the answer from the film’s director himself, Henry Selick. During a Q&A during the Telluride Horror Show Film Festival a young girl asked which holiday ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ truly belongs to. Selick’s answer, the classic is a Halloween movie. So, there it’s settled.
In the film Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king, has grown bored with Halloween. On a walk in the woods he discovers doors to each holiday’s world. When he stumbles through the door into Christmas Town his eyes light up with curiosity about the town’s bright colored lights and strange customs. Jack decides to give Santa a break and bring his twist on Christmas to the world, which does not end well. Finally Jack realizes where he belongs, Halloween town. Along the way we are introduced to a host of characters, including Oogie Boogie, Sally and Santa himself.
