Lund Fantastic Film Festival Announces Full Lineup for Its 27th Edition

Sweden’s Lund Fantastic Film Festival runs the gamut of genre film styles from the vicious to valentines with its 27th edition, running October 30–November 5 both in person and virtual editions. Horror, science fiction, thrillers, and fantasy are all on tap, from Scandinavian premieres of world cinema to anniversary screenings of beloved classics. Following is the official press announcement. Following the announcement of opening night film Medusa (Anita Rocha da Silveira) and after teasing some of this year’s Halloween festivities, the Lund Fantastic Film Festival is thrilled to reveal the full lineup of its rapidly approaching 27th edition (October 30 – November 5). Rounding out the Halloween celebration is a 25th anniversary screening of Scream in honor of Wes Craven. Ghostface will slash his way back onto the cinema screen after a Horror-themed short film package has set the mood. The European premiere of an equally subversive slasher will bring the Halloween festivities to a blood-soaked close on October 31.

‘Happy’s Humble Burger Farm’ Serves Up Horror In December

Scythe and Tiny Build wants to make the horrors of working in fast food more terrifying in their upcoming first-person horror Happy’s Humble Burger Farm where players will work their shift in a food cooking simulator that combines horror elements as they must keep the customers happy or else face the wrath of the restaurant’s mascot Happy. Along with working your shift, players will encounter paranormal events that can affect their minds, as well as their work performance. Along with working their shift, players can explore the city that the restaurant is in to unlock the secrets about the not-so-happy food chain, as well as the player’s own mysterious story by collecting items found in the environment. Happy’s Humble Burger Farm will be serving up the horror on December 3rd for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, with Nintendo Switch joining in the scares in 2022.

Movie Reviews: “Father of Flies” and “The Exorcism of God” (Screamfest)

Father of Flies Director Ben Charles Edwards delivers gripping horror inspired by his childhood with U.S./U.K. coproduction Father of Flies (2021). This one is all about tension, unease, and an increasingly eerie atmosphere, all of which Edwards, who cowrote the screenplay with Nadia Doherty, delivers in spades. Richard (the late Nicholas Tucci in a stirring performance) — father to young, hearing-impaired son Michael (Keaton Tetlow) and rebellious teenage daughter Donna (Page Ruth) — has separated from the children’s mother Linda (Sandra Andreis) and forbidden her from coming to the house to see the children. Movie Reviews: Film Reviews: “Eyes of Fire” and “Devil Story” (Fantastic Fest)

Eyes of Fire American folk horror feature Eyes of Fire (1983) is an underseen gem that has been unavailable on home video for decades. The ambitious film should find a well-deserved wider audience with its beautiful new 4K restoration from Severin Films, which was overseen by writer/director Avery Crounse. In the colonial 1700s before America was established, Reverend Will Smythe (Dennis Lipscomb) is known for burning witches and living with multiple women including married woman Eloise (Rebecca Stanley) and the mysterious Leah (Karlene Crockett). When he escapes a hanging attempt by his fellow colonists, the trio steals the colony’s only raft and sets sail with Eloise’s two daughters and a few other people. Eloise’s woodsman husband Marion Dalton (Guy Boyd) tracks down the group, who find a group of abandoned cabins in a wooded area where the local Shawnee people refuse to go. Movie Reviews: Straight to VHS and Extraneous Matter – Complete Edition (SLASH Film Festival)

Straight to VHS In the Uruguayan documentary Straight to VHS (Directamente para video; 2021), director Emilio Silva Torres chronicles his efforts to locate fellow countryman Manuel Lamas, the filmmaker behind the 1989 direct-to-video obscurity Act of Violence in a Young Journalist that became an obsession with some of those who have seen it. Clips of the movie shown in the documentary make apparent Act of Violence . . .’s non-existent budget — as do Lamas acquaintances who remember him borrowing equipment and not returning it — and its sometimes laughable content. Yet still, some Uruguayan cinephiles are engrossed with locating the creator of the film. Lamas is a difficult person to track down, and Torres finds that almost everyone involved with the making of the film wants nothing to do with being interviewed about it. Movie Review (Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival): The Monsters Without

Writer/director Randal Kamradt’s The Monsters Without (Philippines, 2021) is an interesting creature feature affair. It leans more toward fantasy and adventure than horror, but monster movie fans will want to check this one out for the wide range of supernatural beasts from Philippine folklore on tap, including the rather well-known flying, baby-eating Manananggal. In the English-language The Monsters Without, yablo (monsters) are real, and an ancient entity called Nameless (voice of Nick Medina) has risen to return the other yablo to their home dimension, a move that also threatens humanity. A Philippines-based team of scientists and soldiers called P.H.A.S.E. is the only hope to thwart Nameless’ evil plan. When Nameless kidnaps group leader Setsuko’s (Christina Yr. Lim) newlywed husband Rommel Romero (Jake Macapagal) — second in command at P.H.A.S.E. — matters get personal, and Sesuko and her teammates put themselves in harm’s way to try to rescue Rommel and save the world.
