Filmmaker Joe O’Connell Discusses His Documentary About Rondo Hatton & Bob Burns

Genre documentaries, we can’t get enough of them. I sat down with doc director Joe O’Connell to discuss his new film Rondo and Bob, which delves into two movie icons, Robert “Bob” Burns and Rodon Hatton, who have earned their spots in genre history. Robert “Bob” Burns, whose name you should be familiar with since he helped create the atmosphere of some of horror’s most iconic films, including the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Re-Animator, and The Hills Have Eyes, serving as art director. Remember that iconic mask and the bone furniture in Texas Chainsaw? That was him. Rondo Hatton had a face you just couldn’t forget. The writer turned actor, who suffered from acromegaly, a form of gigantism, which made his face grow in strange ways, appeared in 28 films in the thirties and forties. One of the most highly anticipated upcoming horror movies is Universal Monsters’ Renfield, starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula. Movie Review: Alice

Writer/director Krystin Ver Linden tries to pack a lot of different ideas and cinematic styles in her debut feature Alice. The result is a compelling, if somewhat rushed at points, genre mash-up that delivers a good share of thrills along with plenty of social commentary. Alice (Keke Palmer) is a slave on a plantation in Georgia during the Antebellum period. She marries another slave named Joseph (Gaius Charles), which doesn’t sit well with plantation owner Paul Bennett (Johnny Lee Miller), who abuses her mentally and physically, and reserves Sundays for sexually abusing her. When Joseph’s plans for escape after discovering an artifact that doesn’t fit into the time period — part of a story handed down from a fellow slave — go awry and he is seemingly killed, Alice makes her own attempt at escape. Movie Review: The Long Night Is A Surprising Horror That Pits Scout Taylor-Compton Against A Cult

An ancient cult sets out to deliver a demon to its perfect host, in The Long Night starring Scout Taylor-Compton (Halloween, Halloween 2) as Grace, a young woman desperate to uncover the mystery of her origin and who her family is after growing up in foster care.
