As you can guess by the title, I’ve never played a “souls” game before. I never experienced the soul-crushing repetitive nature of playing, dying, and repeating for hours at a time that makes one question why they put themselves through such mental torture…but I want to, and Cold Symmetry and Playstack were more than happy to test my resolve with their soulslike game Mortal Shell. Mortal Shell takes players to a dark world full of creepy looking enemies, creatures, and mystery as they play as a being that takes over the remains of four dead warriors and fights their way through enemies in order to attain glands from certain enemies to appease the mysterious monstrous prisoner. Now onto the game itself! Leading up to getting the review copy of Mortal Shell I watched and studied gameplay videos of Dark Souls in which this game is said to be like. Long story short, YES, Mortal Shell is on the same level

A great big thank you to the folks at Perfectly Paranormal for allowing me to review their puzzle platformer, Helheim Hassle! Helheim Hassle follows the misadventures of Bjørn, a 14-year-old Viking that’s not really into the idea of dying in battle and going to Valhalla. As fate would have it, Bjørn dies in an act of bravery resulting in him going to Valhalla. Fast forward to the present, we meet Pesto who is from a Hell going to Helheim (Viking Hell) but ends up needing Bjørn’s help (to read runes) in return for his help, Pesto will help Bjørn go to Helheim, the only downside is… Pesto’s magic makes allows Bjørn’s limbs to fall off and move on their own. Onto the game itself! Controls can be a bit to master as certain buttons dictate what limb you want to fall off and take control of. It will take patience as some moments will require you to make decisions quickly

All In! Games and Ovid Works sent me down the Kakfkaesque rabbit hole with their first-person platforming game, Metamorphosis. In Metamorphosis you play as Gregor Samsa who woke up one morning and realized that he turned into a bug and is now employed at a company called Tower who holds all the answers as to why this happened to Gregor and how he can turn human again. Along his journey, Gregor sees the world of insects and meets interesting individuals. Now onto the game itself! Mastering the controls is easy thanks to a tutorial in the beginning plus being made not complicated, to begin with. The movement of Gregor as an insect is fun as the movements are quick and mechanical much like a bug. Gregor can crawl up walls with the help of yellow goo that he finds piles of in certain places. The sound is amazing and I suggest wearing headphones for it so you won’t miss the

It’s getting to that point in summer where I’m tired of the heat and ready for the cool airs of autumn which only means one thing…HALLOWEEN IS COMING! Alas, it’s only August and that means I have to wait… that’s until the awesome ghouls at Epic Llama, and Buka Entertainment brought a little bit of Halloween early with their point and click adventure Darkestville Castle. In Darkestville Castle players take on the role of a demon named Cid who lives in the village of Darkestville. Being the only demon in town, Cid goes around the terrorizes the locals every night for his amusement till one night he inadvertently released a hoard of demons onto the village and in the process lost his castle. With the news a while ago announcing the delay of CD Projekt Red’s upcoming FPS Cyberpunk 2077 being pushed back to November 19th, 2020, many fans feel discouraged, but fear not! Today CD Projekt Red has released three new videos showing what fans can expect to see and hear in the world of Cyberpunk 2077! In the first video titled “Lifepaths”, players will get a look at the backstories that players can experience as V, the game’s protagonist, and how their choices in the world of Dark City can influence gameplay! For those not interested in lore but are instead a person of action, there’s the “Tools of Destruction” video showcasing V’s arsenal of weaponry including melee, firearms, and cyberware weaponry that’s at their disposal to deal with enemies they encounter along their journey. Max Jenkins (Tom Plumley) and his pals Reggie (Joey Morgan) and Liz (Hassie Harrison) spend most of their time, free and otherwise, playin’ a Warcraft-esque MMORPG, but those fabricated adventures are about to become all to real… You see, Max works at a video game store… in fact all of his pals do; and it’s within those confines that our hero discovers a long lost Colecovision game, Nether Dungeon by name, that when conquered unleashes an ancient curse upon the small town our protagonists call home. Soon Max, Reggie, and Liz must face the Nether, along with the help of one of the game’s creators, Eugene Wylder (Greg Grunberg), and their level of success will determine the fate of the entire world! With the success of the open beta, where players have died 350 million times, Cold Symmetry and Playstack are happy to announce that in roughly two weeks, Mortal Shell will be released! Along with the announcement comes a new trailer that features of all things…a Medieval Bazooka! Mortal Shell is a third-person “Souls-like” game where players are resurrected from the dead to fight dangerous foes and collect their glands to appease the Dark Father but the fights are challenging where players can easily die and lose glands but have to return to where they died to reclaim them…or die trying…multiple times. Mortal Shell will be coming to Epic Game Store, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One August 18th, 2020, the game will be coming to Steam in 2021.

All In! Games have announced that their upcoming first-person dive into the world of Kafka, Metamorphosis has finally found itself a release date. The game is inspired by the short story of the same name by Franz Kafka, the game follows Gregor, a man who has suddenly been transformed into an insect and now travels through the unseen world of bugs living in a unique society. Gregor will encounter interesting characters, interact with puzzles, do parkour, and use his unique bug abilities to solve the mystery behind his transformation. Right now, Metamorphosis is available to pre-order for Xbox One right now with a 10% discount. A free demo is available right now on Steam today (July 29th) to August 5th. Metamorphosis will be scurrying to Steam, GOG, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch August 12th.

A big thanks to the hardworking folks over at Wales Interactive for allowing me the opportunity to try out their first-person horror game, Maid of Sker (pronounced Scar)! In Maid of Sker, you play as Thomas, a songwriter, who goes to Hotel Sker to find his wife Elisabeth who is forced to be the new “Maid of Sker” after the original, her mother, died. After arriving, Thomas quickly learns that Elisabeth is being used as a tool in a cult ritual that needs her to sing in traditional Welsh Gaelic to appease something that Elisabeth’s family has kept secret. Onto the game itself. The game heavily relies on sound as it’s suggested that you wear headphones or play with the volume high up. The only downside is there’s way too much ambiance noise, and the player’s footsteps get annoying pretty fast. The music is pretty good, especially the traditional Welsh ones, but at times the music is intense when there’s
