Movie Reviews: “Masking Threshold” and “Blood Moon”(H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival)

Masking Threshold and Blood Moon screened as part of the 26th annual H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival, which ran in-person in Portland, Oregon from October 1–3, 2021 and had a streaming edition October 8–12. Masking Threshold Director Johannes Grenzfurthener’s Austrian film Masking Threshold mashes up elements of Lovecraft and Poe with modern technology and social media, resulting in a highly disturbing, utterly unique take on the “descent into madness” subgenre of psychological horror. An unnamed IT professional (played by Grenzfurthener with voice acting by Ethan Haslam) — of whom viewers see only rare, partial glimpses — takes time off from work to do home experimentation in an attempt to find a cure for his rare form of tinnitus. Medical professionals, of whom he is skeptical, have been unable to help him, and as his research goes on, they combine with scientists to decry him as a crackpot conspiracy theorist. The nameless man is undeterred by such skepticism, and his rants become

Movie Review: “Alison’s Birthday” (NIGHTSTREAM)

Australian folk horror feature Alison’s Birthday (1981) is receiving its first release with the online NIGHTSTREAM film festival since its original VHS release. It’s a supernatural chiller that offers plenty of intriguing sequences and is worthy of finding a new audience. Writer/director Ian Coughlan’s film opens with 16-year-old Alison (Joanne Samuel of Mad Max) and two friends experimenting with a makeshift Ouija board, which results in Alison’s dead father contacting her by possessing one of the other girls, warning Alison to beware of her 19th birthday, before a bookshelf falls on the girl and kills her. If that’s not enough to hook you, parentless Alison reluctantly goes back to her hometown with her disc jockey boyfriend Peter (Lou Brown) to visit her Aunt Jennifer (Bunney Brooke) and Uncle Dean (John Bluthall) to celebrate said 19th birthday, and discovers a Stonehenge-like structure in the land behind their backyard. You can guess that business picks up from there, and you would be

Dark Comedy-Thriller ‘The Estate’ Slashing Its Way Into Theaters & Onto VOD

Director James Kapner makes his feature debut with The Estate, part dark comedy, part thriller, which reminds us that family reunions can be brutal. In the film, when a narcissistic son (Chris Baker), yearning for a life of luxury, and his father’s erratic gold-digging wife (Eliza Coupe) decide to kill their way into their inheritance, they employ the help of an absurdly handsome, mysterious hitman (Greg Finley), initiating a psychosexual love triangle that spirals into more than anyone bargained for. Deftly balancing sharp humor and horror, The Estate delivers a perfectly campy, wildly enjoyable thrill ride that packs a deadly punch. Written by Chris Baker, The Estate also stars Eliza Coupe, Chris Baker, Lala Kent, Heather Matazarro, and Eric Roberts. The Estate debuts in theaters and VOD on October 22, 2021, from Vertical Entertainment.

Ultra Violent Film ‘The Spine Of The Night’ Coming This October

The fantasy-horror film The Spine of Night made its world premiere at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. Now, it’s ready to make its debut in theaters, on Demand, and on Digital this October. Produced with hand-rotoscoped animation, The Spine of Night is inspired by the classic works of artists like Ralph Bakshi and Frank Franzetta, and the fantasy genre as it was in the 1970s: boundary-pushing, politically progressive, and utterly fearless. THE SPINE OF NIGHT is like the insane love child of Heavy Metal and Mandy,” said Mark Ward, Chief Acquisitions Officer at RLJE Films. Written and directed by Philip Gelatt (They Remain) and Morgan Galen King (directorial debut), the film stars Richard E. Grant (Star Wars: Episode IX, upcoming Marvel series “Loki”), Lucy Lawless (“Xena: Warrior Princess”, “Ash vs Evil Dead”), Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), Betty Gabriel (Get Out, “Westworld”), and Joe Manganiello (Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Archenemy). In the ultra-violent fantasy epic, ancient dark magic falls

London’s Arrow Video FrightFest Halloween event, taking place October 29th and 30th, will include an appearance from director/writer Romola Garai at the U.K. premiere screening of her film Amulet. Garai spoke with Arrow Video FrightFest press staff for this syndicated review in anticipation of the event. AMULET will receive its UK premiere at FrightFest’s Halloween event. Excited or what? So excited! It’s a great honour to have our UK premiere at such a brilliantly subversive festival. We are very grateful! You’re most well known as an actress but have you always wanted to write and direct films? I’ve been writing since my teens but it wasn’t until my late 20’s that I realized I wanted to direct as well and I made my short film SCRUBBER. Now what I’d love is to write, direct and act. Never all three together though! What was the writing process like? Were there any major inspirations and motivations that drove you? I was very

A24 Gifts Viewers An Early Christmas Present, The Surprise Release Of 'Lamb' On VOD

Movie Review: Lamb

I have seen my share of strange films but Valdimar Jóhannsson’s Lamb takes the cake. I have never seen anything else like it. When a couple (Noomi Rapace and Hilmir Snær Guðnason) discovers one of the sheep on their farm has given birth to something not completely human, not completely animal, a baby with a human body and a lamb’s head. They set their eyes on the creature they respond with a deadpan reaction like it was an everyday occurrence, and silently go about raising it in a bid to soothe their sorrow for their lost child. The couple’s reactions to the events throughout the movie are downright odd. The first sight of the child they have named Ada is not the only “meh” reaction they have. The two spend much of the film silently going about their business of farming like they are numb. The film’s location is stunning. It plays out in a remote area of Iceland. The
