Movie Review: Stung (2015)

Mrs. Perch (Eve Slantner), a wealthy woman with a green thumb, has been putting her special illegally imported fertilizer on her precious plants. She has no idea that the special fertilizer has been seeping into the ground and that a swarm of killer wasps have made their hive right in the path of the chemicals. The new generation of wasps are mutating into seven foot monsters. During a party for Mrs. Perch’s elite group of friends, suddenly the giant wasps appear and they’re on the war path. It’s up to Paul (Matt O’Leary) and Julia (Jessica Cook), two of the catering staff, Mrs. Perch’s son, played by Clifton Collins Jr. (Pacific Rim) and a local politician (Lance Henriksen) to save themselves from the giant mutant wasps.

I wasn’t sure just what to expect from this creature feature that was directed by Benni Diez and written by Adam Aresty. I was pleasantly surprised. ‘Stung’ has that distinct feel, reminiscent of those creature features from back in the day. It was less cheesy than I would have thought it would be. The cast fit the film perfectly. All in all, I would give ‘Stung’ a good rating. However, that being said, there were a few things that bugged me. When people were stung, it only took moments for new giant wasps to hatch and rip them in two, from the inside. I also had a bit of an issue with the final scene, but I’m not going to ruin the ending for you. All of my complaints with ‘Stung’ have to do with the wasps themselves, but it is worth watching. Luckily, ‘Stung’ is now out on DVD and is available on Netflix from IFC Midnight.
