Review: Dark Horse Comics’ “Negative Space # 1”

It took me several weeks to obtain a copy of Negative Space # 1 to review as I prefer to review comics in print. It was sold out at every local shop but was available online. After reading it I now understand why. This comic is game-changing. This comic will change lives. I mean that. *Spoiler Alert* The story starts with an American Indian writer named Guy Harris who is struggling with writer’s block. However, this isn’t just any story that he is attempting to pen. He is writing his suicide note. Guy decides to go for an evening stroll to try to calm his mind. He isn’t trying to talk himself out of taking his own life. Rather he is looking for the words to express his feelings to those he will leave behind. He goes to order from a local coffee truck ran by his friend Woody. He gets his coffee and Woody can sense something is wrong.

Q & A with Filmmaker Matthias Hoene of Gnomes

Q & A with Filmmaker Matthias Hoene of Gnomes

As TV audiences in the UK brace themselves for a gnome invasion with the UK release of horror-comedy series GNOMES on Disney+, Lead Director Matthias Hoene reflects on the challenges of making horror-comedy, the joy of creating murderous gnomes and working with Obsession star Inde Navarrette. The following interview is syndicated. Gnomes has been described as a mix of Gremlins and Hot Fuzz. As the lead director, how did you approach balancing the comedy with the genuine horror of a small town being terrorised by garden ornaments? The challenge was finding the right cinematic language for two genres that often want completely opposite things. Comedy wants you to see. Horror wants to hide. Comedy thrives on action and reaction happening together, often played at speed. Horror builds through anticipation — withholding information, slowing things down and letting the audience imagine what might be lurking just outside the frame. But underneath all of that, the characters had to feel real. However
