Short Film Review: Guest (2020)

The long and the short of the new bite-sized fright flick from writer/director Finn Callan goes as follows: Mary (Melania Crisan), who just shows up at the home of a woman (Jessica Munna) suffering from self inflicted injuries, is balls deep in trouble town when she tries to kick a real pain in the arcane ass out of her life; namely a disturbing creature (Anna Fraser) that plagues her on the regular. Seems like a simple enough conceit, eh boils n’ ghouls? Well it is, and the way Callan (and his crew including cinematographer Fyodor Houtheusen, and editor Trifa Keedo) tell it is masterful indeed. The visuals are presented in a near monotone palette of cool blues that offers a cold tone that matches the relationship between our heroine and her guest… well at first anyway. Things get a bit more heated… and terrifying, once we see the guest for who she really is, and let me tell ya cats

The Weird World of Wild Eye Releasing: Part 4

As you have seen in the first three parts of this series (located here, here, and here) Wild Eye Releasing are filled to the beastly brim with all manner of horror biz available to satisfy you cats n’ creeps… and here come a few more to put on your revoltin’ radar! First title up is Mind Rage (2001): Schoolteacher Michael (Michael Rogue), is one fucked-up dude thanks to his outrageously traumatic childhood, and let me tell ya, his present isn’t going to go so smooth either when a mysterious blonde named Jessica makes the scene in both Michael, and his policeman brother, Jack’s (Charles Hallahan) lives. Things soon swan-dive into a neo-noir swirl of ultra-stabby serial murders where every mother fucker standing is a suspect! Atmosphere is the best friend of co-writer/director Mark Allen Michaels (aided and abetted by co-writer Gwendolyn Gadek), and he uses it expertly to give an experience not entirely unlike if Hitchcock had directed Se7en… if

Blu-ray Review: The Beast Must Die (1974)

Let me tell you cats n’ creeps, when a movie begins and my eerie earholes are presented with what sounds like porno score raunchiness mixed with the incidental music from the Batman show from the ’60s I know I’m going to get plenty of werewolf action… or maybe just bushels of pubes, either way it’s going to be a hair-raisin’ good time! A millionaire with waaaaay the fuck too much time on his hands gets a wild hair (too soon?) up his ass to invite a group of folks to his estate (which is rigged for recording, even on the sprawling grounds of the property) inform them that one of the gang is a werewolf, and when discovered, that person must be executed. The fact (almost) everyone doesn’t immediately leave and actually believes this preposterous nonsense like a stone cold fact is reason number one that I love The Beast Must Die… Another reason to love this one is the

Movie Review: Max Reload and the Nether Blasters (2020)

Max Jenkins (Tom Plumley) and his pals Reggie (Joey Morgan) and Liz (Hassie Harrison) spend most of their time, free and otherwise, playin’ a Warcraft-esque MMORPG, but those fabricated adventures are about to become all to real… You see, Max works at a video game store… in fact all of his pals do; and it’s within those confines that our hero discovers a long lost Colecovision game, Nether Dungeon by name, that when conquered unleashes an ancient curse upon the small town our protagonists call home. Soon Max, Reggie, and Liz must face the Nether, along with the help of one of the game’s creators, Eugene Wylder (Greg Grunberg), and their level of success will determine the fate of the entire world! One of the greatest assets to Max Reload and the Nether Blasters is the mythology the flick conjures up around the fictitious video game that causes so much trouble for Max n’ friends. There’s a brief television documentary

Blu-ray Review: Tales From the Darkside: The Movie (1990)

Scream Factory is set to release the fearsome feature version of beloved arcane anthology program Tales From the Darkside, and I have had a chance to feast my eerie eyeballs upon it. So as I literally always do, here’s a revoltin’ review! Tales From the Darkside begins with it’s wrap-around segment; the story of a nice, upper-class type dame named Betty (Debbie Harry… yup, good ol’ Blondie!) who just so happens to have a kid (Matthew Lawrence… who has been in tons of things, the best in my opinion being Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad… I loved that fuckin’ goofy shit so damn much!) locked in a cage… a kid she intends on cooking and eating! He manages to buy sometime however as he offers to read some yarns from the eponymous book… The first story we are presented with is Lot 249, which refers to a strange delivery received by Edward Bellingham (Steve Buscemi)… a brainiac who has been cock-blocked from

FilmQuest, a film festival that celebrates the majesty of genre filmmaking in the realms of fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and beyond, backs up its stellar reputation with an amazing lineup of official 2020 selections. I can highly recommend the incredible horror anthology The Mortuary Collection, the rowdy, punk rock-driven horror comedy Uncle Peckerhead, and the humorous reimagining of The Brain That Wouldn’t Die, and I cannot wait to see the other features on tap. Dozens of mouth-watering short films are also scheduled. One of MovieMaker Magazine’s 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee in 2017 and 2015, a MovieMaker Magazine Top 30 Bloody Best Genre Fest in the World in 2018, a FilmFreeway Top 100 Best Reviewed Film Festival, and Utah’s three-time Best of State Film Festival (2018, 2019, 2020), the seventh annual FilmQuest will take place on dates to be determined at the Velour Live Music Gallery in Provo, Utah. Following is the official announcement from FilmQuest. The 2020 FilmQuest

Movie Review: Blood Vessel (2019)

Peep this; it’s the Second World War, and things are gettin’ violent as fuck! Don’t believe me? Well, those dreaded Axis powers have hucked a torpedo at a military hospital ship… resulting in a motley crew of military personal being adrift on the open sea in a lil’ life raft. Fortunately for them, they are soon within spittin’ distance of a huge German vessel… okay, that’s not fortunate at all… but possibly a p.h. better than starving to death in a rubber raft… debatable. Anyway after an action-packed boarding of that beastly boat we get down to brass tacks; namely that the ship is mostly full of corpses… mostly… I mean there’s a pretty unreasonable amount of vampires on board as well… I mean, one would be more than enough to qualify as “unreasonable”, but there’s at least a few more than that. So it’s Das Boot by way of the ‘Demeter’ sequence from Dracula as our harried heroes attempt

Blu-ray Review: Satan’s Slave (1982)

So the basics of Satan’s Slave are as follows: Mawarti (Diana Suarkom) kicks the bucket leaving behind her son Tomi (Fachrul Rozy), her daughter Rita (Siska Widowati), and her asthmatic servant Mr. Karto (I.M. Damsyik)… as well as her business obsessed hubby Munarto (W.D. Mochtar). That’s all fine and dandy, if a touch sad, but what really kicks things off is that Tomi keeps seeing mommy dearest walkin’ around in ghost form, which leads to a visit to the local fortune teller who explains he needs to get some black magic in his life fuckin’ pronto if he wants to survive the supernatural shenanigans to come. As if on cue the new housekeeper, Darminah (Ruth Pelupessy), arrives on the scene and man-o-man is she ever one shady character. Before long folks start dyin’, the dead rise and walk the earth, and our heroes are going to need every arcane art and holy text offered to them to survive the outre
