Blu-ray Review: The Point (1971)

Dig on this y’all; in a kingdom where everything has a point (think a whole ass-load of triangles folks) a boy with a round head named Oblio (The Brady Bunch‘s Mike Lookinland) is having a tough go of it. You see, unlike everyone else in the kingdom, he has no point (real subtle film… real subtle), and when he beats the son of a powerful Count (Lennie Weinrib) at that classic pastime, the triangle toss, his ass is kicked out of the kingdom with the quickness. Oblio arrives in the Pointless Forest and goes on a surreal journey (which is saying something considering what proceeds these events) where he begins to learn, through interactions with the bizarre creatures that inhabit the land, that everything does have a point, even if it isn’t obvious. The Point is nothing if not completely charming… and more than just a little delightfully whacked out, and of course it’s message of everyone has meaning and

Blu-ray Review: Snatchers (2019)

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own. Sara (Mary Nepi) thinks she’s hot shit; it’s senior year in high school and she’s finally become one of the in-crowd (thanks to completely giving up everything that made her unique), had a lil’ of the ol’ in n’ out with her bohunk boyfriend, Skyler (Austin Fryberger), and got her self a little alien bun in the oven, as those wacky-ass teens oft do amirite? Anyway, ol’ Sara gives birth with the quickness, and some sort of symbiotic beastly bug rockets from her socket… a bug that immediately goes on an unreasonably violent killing spree. Soon it’s up to Sara and her former best friend and nerd’s nerd Hayley (Gabrielle Elyse) to figure out how to stop her offspring from destroying the entire town! First of all, Nepi and Elyse make for a truly

Blu-ray Review: ‘Snatchers’ Is A Goretastic Horror Comedy You Need To See

“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided with a free copy of the Blu-ray™ I reviewed in this post. The opinions I share are my own.” What’s worse than being a teen and finding out you’re pregnant? Being a teen finding out that you are pregnant with an alien hellbent on wiping out the human race. That’s what happens in Snatchers, from the writing/directing duo of Stephen Cedars and Benji Kleiman. Picture it, senior year and you’ve finally gotten in with the cool kids. Sara (Mary Nepi) thinks everything is going great, but things suddenly take a horrific turn the morning after she loses her virginity to teen hunk Skyler (Austin Fryberger). When she wakes she is shocked to find that she’s not only pregnant but looks like she’s due to give birth any minute. The only person she thinks of to turn to is her ex-BFF, the same one she dumped for the cool kids. Luckily, Hayley (Gabrielle Elyse) still cares.

Movie Reviews (Horror-on-Sea Film Festival): The Barge People, The Psychics, Blood Tulips

U.K. shocker The Barge People is director Charlie Steed’s follow-up to his 2017 gorefest Escape from Cannibal Farm. In this new offering, Steed takes the basic premise for the original 1977 version of The Hills Have Eyes, moves the vacation location to British countryside canals, and adds some cool-looking monsters to the mix. The result is a fast-paced effort driven by one brutal onslaught after another, but greatly aided by some nice dramatic sequences involving loss and grief, and the breakdown of class differences. Sisters Kat (Kate Davies-Speak in a riveting performance) and Sophie (Natalie Martins) go on a canal barge trip with their boyfriends. The two men — nice guy Mark (Mark McKirdy) and obnoxious Ben (Matt Swales) — don’t get along from the start. When they accidentally bump the barge of some “You think you’re better than us?” types including hot-headed Ricky (Kane Surry) and Jade (Makenna Guyler) and later encounter the group in a watering hole that

Fantasy Horror ‘The Siren’ Swims Onto Digital And DVD This January

This January, writer-director Perry Blackshear (They Look Like People) is unleashing his fantasy-filled, seductive supernatural horror film The Siren, landing on Digital and DVD. The Siren is a tale about two cursed star-crossed lovers. Tom (Evan Dumouchel, Stephen King‘s Doctor Sleep) is a mute man from a sheltered, religious background who is haunted by the childhood accident that cost him his voice. While on a retreat at a lake house, he meets Al (MacLeod Andrews, A Ghost Waits, Doctor Sleep), whose husband drowned in the lake-one of many mysterious deaths there. The area is marked by a local legend of a lovelorn spirit who haunts the surrounding woods and drowns anyone she encounters. The legend proves all too real when Tom encounters the beautiful creature. Drawn to her immediately, Tom knows he has found his soulmate in the seemingly human Nina (Margaret Ying Drake, They Look Like People, 59 Seconds), who must battle to repress her demonic instincts when she

Movie Reviews (Horror-on-Sea Film Festival): Horror Shorts — Lonnie Knutsengripper: Man, Myth and Movies; Off Fleek; The Pit; and Shredders

Lonnie Knutsengripper: Man, Myth and Movies This U.K. comedy focuses on Lonnie Knutsengripper, the fictitious, hard-drinking American producer and director of more than 300 “classic” horror films. He reminisces about two films that he made in England: Interred (1982) and its sequel, the Sh–house Strangler (1990). In the first film, a maniac flushes hapless victims down the toilet in his bar. The victims are “going down the pipe . . . alive!” according to one police officer. In the follow-up movie, the same killer escapes from an insane asylum and targets homosexual victims. As readers might guess, the comedy here is broad and occasionally lewd, but director Richard Rowbotham (who plays Knutsengripper) and screenplay writer David Fenn (who plays the killer) fearlessly keep the gags coming at a frantic clip in this microbudget tribute to microbudget shot-on-video horror features of yesteryear. Off Fleek Teenager Emma (Shona O’Sullivan) is having a “no phones at mealtime” dinner on her birthday with her

(Trailer) ‘After Midnight’ Love Gets Scary

After Midnight (formerly known as Something Else) is headed to theaters and VOD this Valentine’s Day, with the fitting tagline “Love will rip your heart out.” In the film, directed by Jeremy Gardner and Christian Stella, and written by Gardner, Hank is dealing with a girlfriend suddenly leaving, but as if that wasn’t tough enough, there’s also a monster trying to break through his front door every night.” Hank is this small-town, good-old-boy hunter, about 10 years into a long-term relationship,” Gardner recently told EW. “He wakes up one morning and his partner, Abby, has just gone, [leaving] just a very cryptic note. Around the same time she leaves, something starts coming out of the swamp at night and scratching at the door and trying to get in. You don’t know if he’s losing his mind, because he doesn’t know where she is, he doesn’t know what this thing is, people don’t believe him. So it’s kind of a creature-feature

Blu-ray Review: Viy (1967)

At the end of a day of extreme assing around, young monk Khoma (Leonid Kuravlyov) gets lost on his way back to the monastery and seeks shelter at the abode of an outrageously old crone. After being lodged in the barn and acting like a prize-winning douche, the crone, in truth a witch, takes our hero for a flight around the Russian countryside and gets severely beaten by the mad monk for her troubles… she also turns hot A.F. A short time later, Khoma is summoned to a Cossack’s home to stand vigil over his daughter as per her dying wish… and just guess who that daughter is? I’ll just tell ya before you lot answer something like “yellow” or “gorilla”… it’s the witch (still in her babe form). So the long and the short of it is, Khoma must watch over the witch’s coffin for three days… which would be hella easy if not for the fact that she
