Automata, the latest horror from Scottish genre house Hex Studios, has obliterated its £80K ($108K) Kickstarter goal days before the campaign‘s end. Horror fans from all over the world have flocked to support the Gothic style Lovecraftian film, which has earned the film a place in Kickstarter history as the UK’s most funded narrative film EVER. The film centers on the story of antique “expert Brendan Cole who is sent to authenticate a 300-year-old clockwork doll with a notorious history, known as ‘The Infernal Princess’. In the remote Scottish mansion where it has been discovered, Brendan soon finds himself the victim of the automaton’s legendary curse.” Along with genre fans, the film has received support from horror heavy-hitters such as Doomsday actor Craig Conway, Fashionista director Simon Rumley, Ghost Stories actor-director Andy Nyman, and StudioADI, the Academy Award-winning creature effects company behind Starship Troopers, Tremors, and Stephen King’s It. J.J. Abrams Confirms ‘Overlord’ Is NOT Part Of The Cloverfield Franchise

Earlier this week, J.J. Abrams released footage from his new flick Overlord during CinemaCon and it proved that the movie all horror! Abrams also made it clear that the film, Bad Robot’s first R-Rated film, is NOT part of the Cloverfield franchise. But don’t worry, he did confirm that a sequel to the Cloverfield franchise is in the works. The folks over at Joblo got the scoop, saying: The footage we saw featured Wyatt Russell, Bokeem Woodbine and a cast of relative unknowns in traditional WW2 paratrooper gear jumping in as planes blow up around them, before finally getting to the ground, linking up and heading out. We see them discover the heavily-guarded facility and infiltrate it, which is when everything gets a little crazy.” They continue: “We see a bunch of bloody, zombie-like creatures, obviously, people that have been experimented on, vials of a red substance (which is injected into one of the soldiers and seems to give him

SFX Master Turned Director Hiroshi Katagiri Talks ‘Gehenna: Where Death Lives’

Today, I had the honor of interviewing Hiroshi Katagiri, an incredibly talented special effect master, who once served as the primary artist at the legendary Stan Winston Studios. Katagiri has on movies like Escape from L.A., Jurassic Park III, Blade: Trinity, War of the Worlds (2005), The Cave, Doom, Hellboy, Aliens vs. Predators: Requiem, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Cabin in the Woods, Pirates of the Caribean: On Stranger Tides, Green Lantern, The Hunger Games, R.I.P.D., and Pacific Rim. Now, Katagiri is making his feature directorial debut with Gehenna: Where Death Lives, which he also wrote. Headlining the cast is award-winning actor Doug Jones (The Shape of Water) and genre legend Lance Henrikson (Aliens). Eva Swan, Simon Phillips, Justin Gordon, and Matthew Hegstrom also star. Movie Review: Housesitters (2018)

Housesitters Angie and Izzy land a cushy lil’ job…house sitting (go figure). They spend their time at “work” smoking drugs, watching porn, and generally assing around. Of course the owner of the abode has been up to Satan knows what and unleashed a pint-sized demonic nightmare that begins stalking and slaying with wild abandon. Can our heroines pull their heads out of their asses long enough to put an end to the preternatural menace? Kicking things off, Annie Watkins and Jamie Jirak as Angie and Izzy respectively, are charming leads, and it’s generally a fun time watching them. Also of note is the low-rent puppet used for the creature…I absolutely loved his design, all teeth and ill intention, and I’m glad film maker Jason Coffman went this route as it echoed 80’s flicks like Ghoulies and Hobgoblins…films which obviously inspired Housesitters. For the negatives, let’s start with the acting. The first you thing you’ll notice is that this thing is

Blu-ray Review: Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988)

I can’t even to begin to fathom the fact that some of you fine fiends haven’t seen Killer Klowns From Outer Space, but just in case here’s a quick sinister synopsis: When a big top from beyond the stars lands on Earth and dispenses monstrous alien clowns, it’s up to a gaggle of college kids to try and save the day by facing off against the bizarre creatures and their even more bizarre weapons (cotton candy guns, man eating shadow puppets, killer popcorn et. al.) Can our heroes survive the night and send those ha-ha horrors packing? Surreal, hilarious, filled to the rafters with over-the-top practical effects goodness; Killer Klowns is considered a classic (klassic?) by many, and considered a masterpiece by your’s cruelly. Besides an overwhelming sense of fun and frights, the main takeaway from ol’ double K is that low budget horror pics can be imaginative and unique on a shoestring budget…a lesson today’s slasher and haunting obsessed

Movie Review: Ghoul School is a Gloriously Absurd Fright Flick Experience!

Steve and Jeff, a couple of hard-luck horror hound losers that attend a high school that has to be down the street from Nuke ‘Em High, find their very existence turned upside down when some thugs accost the school’s janitor looking for some…some…I’m not sure they say exactly…and push a mysterious button that releases deadly toxins into the school’s water supply that turns the student body (more specifically the swim team) into flesh-eating, blue skinned, razor toothed monsters! Along the way, Joe Franklin (ask your grandparents kids) and Jackie “The Jokeman” Martling (ask your parents kids) show up for no reason (well Jackie showed up to throw his merch all over every nook and cranny of the scenery), extreme gore splashes across the screen, hard rockin’ ensues, lines are flubbed, and our “heroes” attempt to save the day! Low budget, low brow, and gloriously absurd, Ghoul School is a whole heap of fright flick fun! There are plenty of ridiculous

Jason Coffman Makes His Directorial Debut With The Horror-Comedy ‘Housesitters’

The trailer has arrived for Chicago-based filmmaker Jason Coffman’s feature film debut Housesitters, via Tomorrow Romance. Inspire by films like Ghoulies, the female-driven horror-comedy follows the misadventures of Angie (Annie Watkins, “Jan” in the original New York and Chicago runs of hit stage production The Brady Bunch) and Izzy (Jamie Jirak, formerly of Chicago’s pH Comedy Theater) as they take on a plum housesitting gig that kind of spirals into supernatural horror. Housesitters has been submitted to a number of 2018 festivals in advance of a VOD release later this year. Peter Ash, Jay J. Bidwell, Bethanie Louise, Mariah Michael, James Timothy Peters, and Ben Schlotfelt co-star in the film that features a creature puppet designed and built by Ohio-based independent filmmaker Dustin Wayde Mills (The Puppet Monster Massacre). Behind the camera, Jolene Vega served as cinematographer with Jef Burnham as assistant director and Tatiana von Recklinghausen as lead makeup/effects artist. The soundtrack includes a score by Chicago-based Joshua Burke
