Chilling Horror Thriller ‘Strange Darling’ Debuting at FrightFest

London’s Pigeon Shrine FrightFest, the U.K.’s premiere horror and genre-film festival, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year from August 22-26, moving to the ODEON Luxe Leicester Square, and today revealing its fantastic poster for this year. THE FUNERAL (CENAZE; Turkey, 2023) Hearse driver Cemal (Ahmed Rifat Sunger) takes a job of which he is leary from the start: driving away with the body of a murdered young woman named Zeynep (Cansu Türedi) and hiding away with the corpse for a month until her family is ready to claim it. Matters become instantly complicated when Cemal checks into a motel and hears breathing coming from Zeynep’s casket. I don’t want to give away too much more of the plot, so suffice it to say so that in the first act, viewers learn that Zeynep is indeed quite dead — sort of — and that she develops a particular hunger, and that Zeynep’s feelings toward her drive him to do whatever it takes to feed her. The Waterhouse (U.K., 2023) Writer/director Samuel Clemens’ The Waterhouse boasts mesmerizing sound design, captivating visuals, and a satisfyingly eerie, enigmatic tone. Thieves Eric (Alan Calton), Matt (Dominic Vulliamy), and Paul (Michelangelo Fortuzzi) have stolen a painting, the profits from which could make them rich. There’s a problem, though, as Matt’s mother Denice (Corrine Wicks), who helped with the heist, is missing, and when Eric finds blood and an object that could give rise to something going wrong, he keeps the information to himself. The trio is holed up in an isolated house on the beach and suspicion rises among them. Spoiler-Free Reviews: COLD MEAT and THE DIVE (Pigeon Shrine FrightFest)

COLD MEAT (2023) Cold Meat should be gone into — no pun intended — as cold as possible. Learning too much about director Sébastien Drouin’s winter-set horror thriller before watching it would be doing a great disservice to yourself. Suffice it to give you the initial set-up: traveler David (Allen Leech) is traveling through an extremely snowy area in Colorado. He stops off at a diner, where he calmly intervenes when waitress Ana (Nina Bergman) is physically and verbally harassed by her drunken ex Vincent (Yan Tual), who leaves without further incident. When David gets back on the road, Vincent pursues him in a larger vehicle and David strands his car in deep snow when trying to elude the violent man. What follows is a combination of survival horror — taking place mostly in David’s car and its immediate surroundings — and another fear-fare element that would be a big spoiler to give away here, and there may be something

Spoiler-Free Reviews: FAILURE! and THE BLUE ROSE (Pigeon Shrine FrightFest)

FAILURE! (2023) Writer/director Alex Kahuam’s splendidly crafted one-take feature about the highly stressful day of a second-generation plastics factory owner James (Ted Raimi in an excellent performance) trying to come to grips with possibly having to sell his family business because of overwhelming debt and his daughter’s upcoming high-end marriage. James is a fast talker, and he’ll need to use that talent to the best of his abilities as he is visited by a wedding fitting party, some men as desperate for money as he is, and other characters ranging from the sympathetic to the deadly. Erenesto Lomeli’s crackerjack cinematography keeps viewers up close and personal with the proceedings, and the smooth one-take approach is bolstered by Kahuam’s razor-sharp dialogue. Raimi puts on a veritable acting clinic as his character is dealt one problem after another. A sizable supporting cast adds to the tension, which is peppered with occasional dark humor. Failure! is a thriller, but depending on your interpretation
