Movie Review: Animal Among Us (2018)

Merrymaker Campgrounds has a bit of a bad rep…I mean sure two girls were savagely murdered there a few years back, but the case was chalked up to an animal attack and that’s all she wrote, right? Fuck no, what the hell kind of fright flick would that be?!! Enter horror author/college professor/philanderer Roland Baumgarner (Christian Oliver) who just so happened to write a book based on that hot mess mentioned above and heads out to Merrymaker to cut the ribbon at the camp’s grand re-opening. Once there he meets the rangers in charge; Anita and Poppy Bishop (Larisa Oleynik and Christine Donlon respectively), grizzled hunter Burl Wolf (Don Frye, and some frazzled survivors that claim they were fucked up six ways to Sunday by a monster…”animal attack” my ass! Of course the killing continues on and secrets are revealed that challenge everything our heroes know about the monster and themselves! Let’s start with the positives with Animal Among Us…and

Movie Review: A.I. Tales (2018)

Usually when I have to lay my putrid peepers on an arcane anthology things take a turn for the horror biz, but recently I was sent a picture packed with yarns of a sci-fi bent, all with the theme of artificial intelligence as their linking narrative element. Let’s see how the disparate stories (these shorts are presented “as is” with no connecting framing narrative) of A.I. Tales stack up, shall we? First up comes Seed; the story of a man named Nathan (Nelson Lee, who also wrote and directed the film) who’s family and friends gather to celebrate his birthday, but rather than being a joyous affair things take a turn for the melancholy as our protagonist reflects on the life he has lead with the folks gathered, warts and all. So why is Nathan so glum…why because it is his 40th birthday and there fore he must be reduced to just his consciousness and give up his body in

A Nun Burns In One Of The First Images From ‘Heretiks’

Remeber the fantastic werewolf film Howl? Well, director Paul Hyett is back with a new terrifying tale, Heretiks, which is heading to Frightfest where it will make its world premiere. Ahead of its debut, we have a first look at the supernatural to share with you and it’s pretty creepy. This frightening flick stars a cast full actors and actresses with serious horror cred, including Michael Ironside (Total Recall), Clare Higgins (Hellraiser), and Hannah Arterton (“Safe”). Set in Britain in the 17th Century, Heretiks centers on a young woman who, after being saved from execution, discovers she has a new evil within her. Hyett co-wrote the script with Conal Palmer. This is the second time the duo has worked together. They also teamed up back in 2012 for the dark thriller The Seasoning House. “In the early 17th century, innocent young Persephone is falsely accused and put on trial for her life. Her fate seems sealed except for the timely

Starship Troopers’ Casper Van Dien Talks ‘Darkness Reigns’ And More

Casper Van Dean, that’s a name everyone recognizes. When you hear it, odds are, you automatically think of the giant bug movie Starship Troopers. Well, Mr. Van Dien sat down with me to talk about that iconic film and his latest projects, including the supernatural film Darkness Reigns. Horror Fuel: “What was it like on the set of Starship Troopers?” Casper Van Dien: “It was a little bit surreal at the time. I was on this massive production team, with Edward Neumeier, writer of RoboCop, which I am a huge fan of. They had all the same team that worked on RoboCop. I am such fan that. All the actors and all the crew, the extras, there were so many people. It felt like a real family though. We all got along really well for the most part.” Horror Fuel: “Did they use mostly practical effects or was most of it CGI?” Caper Van Dien: “It was hard. There were

Movie Review: Satan’s Slaves (2017)

Pengabdi Setan, or Satan’s Slaves (the title of both this film and the original 1982 film upon which it is based) concerns a cash strapped Indonesian family who suffers the loss of the matriarch of the clan. Upon her death, the family is left with a lingering debt due in part to having had to pay out the ass for medicine for her preternatural (and mega-creepy) illness. To alleviate that financial burden, Daddy Dearest heads off to the city to find a way to make money leaving his four children home alone. It doesn’t take long before shit hits the frightful fan six ways to Sunday as soon the children’s mother’s ghost begins appearing in ever more frightful ways…and her pact with a Satanic cult to allow her to bear children (she was barren up to that point ‘natch) is revealed. Can our young heroes survive the supernatural’s invasion into their lives (including the aforementioned cult and ghosts, as well

Movie Review: Mad Genius (2017)

Mason Wells (Chris Mason) gets a wild hair up his ass about “fixing” society’s ills by hacking the human mind in order to save mankind from themselves. This seems reasonable (in a totally batshit, definitely going to go wrong sort of way). Standing in Mason’s way is the fact that he doesn’t have the resources to pull this off on the scale necessary in any way, shape, or form…and he has multiple personalities rattlin’ around in his head (thanks to the fact he’s done the initial testing of his new technology on himself) making him do whatever it take to see his crazy scheme come to fruition. To make matters worse, he spends his time hanging out with some sort of tech obsessed drug cult that hangs out in a warehouse having raves and attempting to expand their consciousness via new hardware (oh, and drugs as previously established). Before our story is through, what will be left of Mason’s morality

Christopher Micklos and Jay Sapiro are making their directorial debut with the chilling supernatural thriller The Nursery. So I sat down with Micklos and Sapiro to discuss their film, how it came to be, and what’s next for the duo. In the film, “When Ranae, a college student babysits for a family with a tragic history, she finds herself stalked by a sinister presence and haunted by ghosts from her past. Horror Fuel: “How did you two get brought together for The Nursery?” Jay: “Chris and I have owned a media firm with our third partner and fellow filmmaker Glenn Chung for about twenty years.
