The Brooklyn Horror Film Festival returns to bring the best and most provocative of horror cinema to local screens and we’re thrilled to announce wave one of our programs today! Join them October 11th – 18th in venues across Brooklyn as they screen films from around the globe, along with their brand new HEAD TRIP block spotlighting films that push the boundaries and expectations of the horror genre as part of their most expansive and diverse curation yet. It’s an amazing time to love horror, with the genre being as diverse and challenging as it’s ever been, and our programming this year exemplifies the best of where the genre is currently at as well as the daring new directions in which it’s heading,” says Matt Barone, BHFF’s senior programmer. “Our mission remains to buck the genre’s conventions with forward-thinking films. Ranging from KNIFE + HEART’s modernization of classic slasher vibes to LUZ’s reinvention of exorcism tropes, not to mention TOWER.

A Young Girl’s Hidden Supernatural Talents Come To Light In ‘Prodigy’

After its highly-successful run on Amazon, the psychological thriller Prodigy makes its premiere on Netflix later this month as well as On Demand. In the film, “A discrete branch of the military calls upon psychologist James Fonda to take the case of a dangerous patient, nine-year-old Ellie. As their session begins, the young girl dissects Dr. Fonda’s unconventional methods, revealing her genius-level intellect. Only by challenging her to a battle of wits does Fonda begin to unravel the supernatural mystery surrounding Ellie — a deadly secret that threatens to destroy them both.” Prodigy wrapped an eventful festival run last year, accepting invites to nine festivals, including trips to Cinequest, Fantaspoa (Brazil) and Santa Cruz — where the film took home Best Narrative Feature honors. The film carried that success into its digital release, drawing a broad audience on Amazon, and maintaining a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score. Written and directed by Alex Haughey and Brian Vidal, the film stars Richard Neil

Movie Review: The Grand Son (2018)

Tod (Rhys Wakefield…who we interviewed right here) and his sister Lani (Fabianne Therese) live a life of decadent excess high in the Hollywood hills within the walls of their grandmother Judy’s (an aging starlet who know hosts a home shopping show) mansion. Things are all wine and roses until ol’ Tod (accidentally?) busts a cap in Judy’s ass making her as dead as her movie career. With Judy gone, how can the siblings charmed lives continue on as before? Well Tod is as good at hatching schemes as he is at murdering his relatives, so he seduces the producer of the shopping show and sets Lani up as the host in the wake of Judy’s “absence”…which actually improves the ratings, ‘cuz Lani is hot as the Devil’s balls and all. Things of course escalate, and our “heroes” must go further and further to maintain their ruse! The Grand Son is a great example of a slow burn thriller done right!

‘The Purge’ Star Rhys Wakefield Talks Psychopaths & New Projects In An Interview

One of the most memorable scenes from The Purge franchise stars Rhys Wakefield as that well-dressed young killer who gave the family in the first film an ultimatum as he grinned like the Chesire cat. That smile is hard to forget. Rhys has starred in many other roles than just in The Purge. He went diving in Sanctum, he went to school in After the Dark, co-starred in Echoes of War, appeared alongside Terrence Howard in Cardboard Boxer, and played the role of Lucas on the long-running series “Home and Away“. Now, he gearing up to make his directorial debut. Rhys sat down with me to talk about it and his role in The Purge as well as the soon to be released thriller The Grand Son (aka American Pets). The Grand Son follows Tod (Wakefield), a twisted young man, whose Hollywood lifestyle is put in jeopardy when he makes a fatal error. Horror Fuel: “Did you enjoy getting in

Movie Review: What Still Remains (2018)

In a shitty future in which humanity has been nearly decimated by a disease that turns normal folk into bloodthirsty lunatics, Anna (Lulu Antariksa) lives with her brother and dying mother in a small cabin in the woods. The siblings make treks to the remains of a nearby city to scavenge for whatever they can find to survive…but they have to be careful, for if they stay too long the dwellers of the ruins, the Berserkers (who legend has it infected themselves with the aforementioned disease on purpose), will find them and be rather agitated…and by that I mean completely prone to murderizing anyone they see. Short story short, Anna’s brother buys it and her dying mother changes roles to become her dead mother leaving our plucky heroine alone in a hostile world. Soon a stranger, Peter (Colin O’Donoghue) arrives, and invites Anna to travel back with him to where he calls home. Reluctantly she agrees, as there is truly

Movie Review: Blood Clots (2018)

As is the case with more than a few arcane anthologies these days, Blood Clots skips the tried and true wrap-around feature and just gets with the gettin’ by presenting seven stories (called “clots”) with no discernible thread. so without further ado, let’s lay our eerie eyeballs on these things one by one and see how they stack up! Clot I: Hell of a Day: (Director/Writer: Evan Hughes) An injured woman takes shelter in an abandoned restaurant as a zombie apocalypse rages outside the structure. Soon the creatures start their shimmy shamble shenanigans and end up coming inside, so our heroine descends into the basement and locks herself in. Will she survive with her sanity and body parts intact? This one was a solid lil’ zombie flick cum psychological thriller. The film was definitely shot and acted well, and the effects were damn solid and should satisfy a gore hounds blood tooth nicely. All in all a strong way to

Sebastian Gutierrez Tells Us About ‘Elizabeth Harvest’ And More In An Interview

Sebastian Gutierrez’s gem of a thriller, Elizabeth Harvest, will soon arrive in theaters and On Demand. Ahead of its release, I had the opportunity to talk with Gutierrez, the same man behind Gothika, Snakes on a Plane, The Eye, and Girl Who Walks Into a Bar, about his new visually striking film that has more twists than a Slinky factory. Abby Lee stars as Elizabeth, a young newlywed who arrives at her new husband’s (Cirán Hinds) home. He explains to her that everything that is his now belongs to her – all except for a locked room he forbids her to enter. When he goes on a trip she can’t resist entering the room, but when she does, her whole life comes crashing down. Sebastian: “Elizabeth Harvest is an old-fashioned European horror. Don’t you think?” Horror Fuel: “I do. It has a similar feel as the original Suspiria.” Sebastian: “It’s influenced by Dario Argento. There was a strain of horror

‘The Shelter’ Recieves A Worldwide Release

The critically acclaimed psychological thriller The Shelter, starring iconic actor Michael Paré (“Streets of Fire”, Eddie and the Cruiser), is now available for viewing around the world, thanks to its newfound home on Vimeo On Demand. The film, which the L.A. Times called “remarkably ambitious” and “a concise genre piece that doubles as a heavily metaphorical character sketch”, had previously been released on DVD and VOD in the United States, and was also sold in various countries around the world including Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Netherlands, South Africa, Sweden and South East Asia. Now the rest of the world gets their chance to watch the suspense-filled film which critics loved at the London Frightfest, as well as the Sitges Film Festival. Lou Simon Talks ‘3: An Eye For An Eye’ & Being A Female Filmmaker In Today’s World

Writer, director, and producer Lou Simon sat down with me to discuss women in the film industry and her latest genre film 3. Behind films like All Girls Weekend, Hazmat, Agrophobia, and The Awakened, Lou has been making her mark in the genre for years and seems to know just what to do to get a message across to fans. In 3: An Eye For An Eye “A man and a woman kidnap her rapist in order to extract a confession from him. They need to get his confession on tape because he has made up an alibi. Locked up in the basement of a remote home, he is unwilling to confess on camera and continues to assert his innocence. With time running out, how far are they willing to go for justice and what if they are wrong?” Horror Fuel: “What is it like to be a woman in the film industry these days?” Lou: “Well, it’s hard being
