Movie Review: Abandoned

Movie Review: Abandoned

Director Spencer Squire’s Abandoned doesn’t offer anything new in the scare-fare arena, as the film rolls out one haunted house trope after another, but solid performances from its three leads and perfectly fine technical aspects make it an ultimately watchable diversion. Sara (Emma Roberts of American Horror Story, Scream Queens, and The Blackcoat’s Daughter) and her veterinarian husband Alex (John Gallagher Jr. of 10 Cloverfield Lane) move with their newborn son from the hectic city life to the bucolic life of a rural house in which a tragic multiple murder/suicide occured, which they learn about before signing papers but buy the house anyway. With a set-up like this, it’s obvious that things aren’t going to go well for the couple. Sara, who is suffering from postpartum depression but refusing to take medicine because she wants to breastfeed her baby — who only wants bottles — begins hearing and seeing things in the house that grow from odd to frightening. Alex,

Short-Film Reviews: “Talisman,” “Wendigo,” “SMAHORROR,” and “Spare Body” (National Film Festival for Talented Youth)

Short-Film Reviews: “Talisman,” “Wendigo,” “SMAHORROR,” and “Spare Body” (National Film Festival for Talented Youth)

Talisman One person’s belief system is another person’s superstition, and director Reangsei Phos’ Talisman (Canada) finds school-age Yi (Sean Lu) torn between those two schools of thought. His family has just moved into a new house, and as his mother (Qingqing Yang) tries to protect the home against ghosts, his father (Danny Liang) admonishes her not to fill the young boy’s head full of nonsense. Strange things are indeed happening inside the house, which leads to shocking acts of violence. Phos balances solid family drama with well-paced suspense, including some blink-and-you’ll-miss-it occurrences which should keep viewers’ eyes glued to the proceedings. The cast members, including Pascale Behrman, all turn in solid performances. Wendigo The animated short Wendigo (Ireland, 2021) is an intriguing take on the North American First Nations mythological creature combined with other eldritch occurrences. Charlie (voiced by Marc-Ivan O’Gorman) is an inquisitive young man who wants to investigate first-hand what remains of the Olsen manor, site of some

Movie Review: Alice

Movie Review: Alice

Writer/director Krystin Ver Linden tries to pack a lot of different ideas and cinematic styles in her debut feature Alice. The result is a compelling, if somewhat rushed at points, genre mash-up that delivers a good share of thrills along with plenty of social commentary. Alice (Keke Palmer) is a slave on a plantation in Georgia during the Antebellum period. She marries another slave named Joseph (Gaius Charles), which doesn’t sit well with plantation owner Paul Bennett (Johnny Lee Miller), who abuses her mentally and physically, and reserves Sundays for sexually abusing her. When Joseph’s plans for escape after discovering an artifact that doesn’t fit into the time period — part of a story handed down from a fellow slave — go awry and he is seemingly killed, Alice makes her own attempt at escape. Unfortunately the trailer and poster for the film give away a major twist of the film, but this happens early enough in the proceedings that
