Movie Review: Vivarium

You would think that a brand new subdivision would be an ideal place to start a future, but that is not the case in Lorcan Finnegan’s Vivarium. When a young couple, played by Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots, enters a real estate office they get more than they bargained for after finding themselves trapped in a neighborhood. Unable to leave until they raise a mysterious child, the couple finds them fighting for their lives and their sanity. Vivarium is unlike any movie I’ve ever seen. The way Finnegan and co-writer Garret Shanley manipulate your emotions is both subtle and clever, leaving you with an undeniable uneasy feeling in your gut as the story plays out. Imogen Poots is the heart of Vivarium. I was so impressed by her performance. She captured her character Gemma’s every emotion so well and made the movie feel real. You really could almost feel her pain. Poots has fantastic range. Eisenberg’s crotchety character Tom was

Blu-ray Review: Carnival Magic (1983)

Roll up! Roll up! Ye olde flea-pit dirt carnival has rolled into town and is sure to delight only the most desperate of audiences! Attendance notwithstanding this shitty show is kinda doomed anyway as the two “main attractions”, animal battering hot-head tiger trainer Kirk Wylder (Joe Cirillo) and sullen magician Markov (Don Stewart) are butting heads like some mountain goat mother fuckers. While Kirk’s primary talent is being a world-class drunken ass, Markov the Magnificent on the other hand has the ability to mentally communicate with animals, including his hyper-intelligent, super-horny, car driving talking chimp sidekick (and ass grabbing personal trainer) Alexander the Great… for fuck’s sake… oh, and he gives some expert relationship advice on the side… naturally. Anyway, Markov’s act is soon the total shit yo, and is attracting throngs of local-yokels who have doubtless had only such riveting entertainment as “wart counting” and “hog-tickling” as their primary sources of diversion judging by how crazy they go for

Blu-ray Review: When the Wind Blows (1986)

Although When the Wind Blows opens with a rousing ditty by none other than David Bowie himself, you can forget any tight-trouser magic dancin’ from this lil’ nuclear number… Geezers James (John Mills) and Hilda spend their old days doin’ old people shit in their cozy abode in the British countryside. What kind of old people shit you may ask? Why reading the newspaper, listening to the radio… hey, speaking of this mass media, James decides he should pick up some pamphlets regarding how to save one’s ass when the nukes come raining down as the international outlook is looking rather cloudy… mushroom cloudy, as that aforementioned media let’s us know! After reading those loony leaflets, James goes about following all of the patently ridiculous plans detailed within and ends up fuckin’ up their house but good. Long story short, the bombs fall, the advice was right shit, and our heroes realize surviving may have been quite the elephant sized

Product Review: HorrorPack’s April Subscription Box

Let’s be honest, thanks to the pandemic, we’ve all burned through most of the good things to watch on Netflix, Prime, Hulu, and Tubi, so I was thrilled Tuesday to find April’s HorrorPack subscription box sitting on my doorstep. The monthly subscription box contained four Blu-rays, each entertaining in its own way. The 2017 sci-fi horror Life, starring Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Rebecca Ferguson. The film follows a team of scientists aboard the International Space Station who have discovered a new life form, one which caused the mass extinction on Mars. Now, the crew faces an extinction of its own. A Double Feature: 2-Headed Shark Attack and Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus. Both films are cheesy sci-fi action horror flicks. The HorrorPack Limited Edition Blu-ray Nefarious from director Richard Roundtree, a 2019 film about two groups of people brought together after a botched robbery. The group of criminals get more than they bargained for and must find a way to

Blu-ray Review: Universal Horror Collection: Volume 4 (1937 – 1946)

The last three Universal Horror Collections brought to us courtesy of those devious n’ delightful devils over at Scream Factory have been a creepy cornucopia of fright flick fun (Don’t believe me? Head here and here and here to read my thoughts for your own sinister self!)! Let’s see if Volume 4 lives up to it’s predecessors! Starting things off we have 1937’s Night Key: David Mallory (Boris Karloff) is the old-as-balls inventor of a real peach of a new burglar alarm… in fact it’s so great that a real asshole of a businessman ends up taking our nearly blind hero for a ride and steals the profits from the device. Well Dave isn’t going to sit still for that prime cut of being poor bullshit, and before long and he falls in with some gangsters who want to utilize our protagonist’s smarts to help them come into some easy (read: fuckin’ stolen) money! A rather lightweight caper with a

Blu-ray Review: Bones (2001)

Jimmy Bones(Snoop Dogg) was one bad-ass mother fucker in the ’70s; a true gangster’s gangster that ultimately was betrayed by a friend and met his demise in a deal gone south. Flash forward to the ‘mazing future year 2001, and Bones’ ol’ crib is purchased by a group of young entrepreneurs who hope to turn it into a nightclub. This causes the spirit of Bones to rise, and he immediately sets his sights on getting powerful enough to enact his supernatural revenge plot on those that did his ass oh-so wrong back in the disco days… and woe be to any mother fucker that gets in his way! I’m not here to mince words with you cats n’ creeps, so let me just say that Bones is a huge amount of frightful fun! It’s deft blend of blaxploitation and horror movie tropes is an entertaining winner, and while some of the effects are quite shit (I’m looking at you cheap-ass

Blu-ray Review: Munster, Go Home! (1966)

If you are of a certain age (read: old as all fuckity-fuck), then you doubtless grew-up with the fabulous freaky Munster family courtesy of mid-morning re-runs on TV. As a kid I loved every hauntingly hilarious minute of their sensational show… but said show wasn’t enough to contain the ghoulish goings-on, so in 1966 a fearsome feature film was created… and this time the Munsters came at ya in creepy color for the first time! Munster, Go Home! (the film in question, ‘natch) sees the family’s patriarch, the Frankenstein monster surrogate Herman (Fred Gwynne), inheriting an ancestral family home down jolly ol’ England way! So the whole grizzly gang: the aforementioned Herman, his vamp wife Lily (Yvonne De Carlo), her father/Dracula stand-in Grandpa (Al Lewis), and his werewolf son Eddie (Butch Patrick)… along with their perefctly normal niece (who’s appearance is monstrous to them) hope on a boat and set sail across the putrid pond! But things aren’t going to

Blu-ray Review: The Astrologer (1977)

After a nutty exposition dump set to stock footage where we learn The Astrologer, Alexi (Bob Byrd), a mystic who uses astrology and computers to predict the future and advise world leaders from his swanky headquarters along with the top-secret branch of the CIA; Interzod. So what exciting case is Alexi involved in at the present? Well, it seems in ten days time, the second coming of Christ is going down, so there’s that to contend with, plus Alexi’s girlfriend (maybe it’s his wife… I have no idea, and perhaps the film doesn’t either) Kate (Monica Tidwell) goes to see a psychic that gives her a reading (seems fucking redundant as all fuckity fuck seeing as who her boyfriend is and all)… after Kate gets nude first; as is the fortune telling way we are all accustomed to, amirite? Soon ol’ Alexi hops a wall-to-wall carpeted airplane to give a talk somewhere or another, while in stock-footage laden India, a
