Movie Review: Netflix’s Original Film ‘Apostle’ Is Simply Brilliant

Corruption, greed, envy, perversion, murder, all stand prominent in Netflix‘s feature film Apostle, from writer-director Gareth Evans (The Raid). In this dark, twisted, supernatural tale Thomas Richardson (Dan Stevens) journeys to the island where a cult is holding his sister hostage, on a mission to bring her home. The prophet Malcolm, played by Michael Sheen, rules his followers with an iron fist and the congregation believes his every word, going so far as to give their blood as a sacrifice, which he uses to feed the god he and the other two founders have bound in chains, though the colony is unaware of her presence. While Thomas secretly searches for his sister he stumbles across the truth behind the colony’s religion and it’s frightening. But what is more disturbing is how far the men that rule the island will go to keep their power and how quickly they turn on each other and their own families. The worst part of

Writer-Director P.J. Starks Reviews ‘The Predator’ For Horror Fuel

P.J. Starks, the man behind the Volumes of Blood franchise, a writer, director, and producer, has shared with us his review of The Predator, written and directed by Shane Black. Follow Volumes of Blood on Facebook to stay up to date on Stark’s upcoming sequel Volumes of Blood: Devil’s Knight. When a young boy accidentally triggers the universe’s most lethal hunters’ return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race. When I first heard this film was being made by the same guys who conceived The Monster Squad, it was difficult not to be excited. A new movie from the creators of a beloved film from my childhood! One I’d watched a gazillion times. I had a nerdgasm to put it lightly, however, I did my best not to fanboy out and watch the film with unbiased eyes. The films set up is as simple as the

Movie Review: Extremity (2018)

Ol’ Allison (Dana Christina) has had a rough go in life, so instead of gobblin’ down fistfuls of pills are seeing a shrink on the regular and leaving it at that, she gets the neon light idea in her noggin to spend an ungodly amount of time in a haunted attraction…but not one of those rinky-dink numbers where bored high school kids dress up as Drac and jump out to give you a start, nope; our gal goes to the type of place (Perdition by name) where the participants can be touched, tortured, and generally tormented by a cadre of masked marauders…you know, the perfect cure for case of jangled nerves. As the…well, let’s just call it an “ordeal” goes on her hoped for therapy instead unleashes even more hell from her psyche…but is all as it seems? The most striking element of Extremity is that it is one hell of a beautiful film to set your eerie eyeballs on.

Movie Review: The First Purge

This October The First Purge, directed by Gerard McMurray, arrives on Blu-ray and DVD and I’m sure you are wondering what we thought of the film that takes us back to where it (the first experiment) all began. Set on Staton Island, we see the new Founding Fathers, backed by the NRA, begin the first experiment to see how the public will react to a day where citizens are able to commit any crime without fear of punishment. We see the residents of Staton Island line up and given not only contacts to record their participation, but $5,000 with more promised if they go out that night, which is quite an incentive for those in desperate need of money. But not all of the residents approve. Nya (Lex Scott Davis) leads part of the community in protest. Concerned about her brother Isaiah (Jovian Wade) after she finds out he’s been selling dope for Dmitri (Y’Ian Noel), she thinks he’s off

Movie Review: ‘Afraid’ Starring “The Walking Dead’s” Alanna Masterson

Jason Golberg, the co-creator of prank series “Punk’d”, makes his directorial debut with Afraid, starring “The Walking Dead’s” Alanna Masterson and George Byrne. The film opens with a screen filled with twelve security channels. This where I should explain that the entire film is shown from security camera feeds inside and outside of a remote cabin, which often leaves the cast’s faces blurry. After the couple arrives we learn that Masterson’s character has chosen a college overseas and her boyfriend (Byrne) is trying everything in his power to stop her from leaving, which comes across in my opinion as pathetic, not romantic. He’s way too desperate. Throughout the movie we see computer screens of phone numbers be cloned and someone messaging Masterson’s character uncovering some bad deeds she has committed. When someone begins to leave messages on the walls of her room and stalk the couple the action begins (if that’s what you want to call it). We only get

DVD Review: ‘Dead Night’ Is Deadly Good

Two lovers parked in a wooded area find themselves stalked by a hooded figure. When the man gets out to check on a noise, he’s murdered and the woman taken. Skip forward nine months, the woman is laying in the dirt screaming, ready to give birth. Two hooded figures are there by her side as she delivers and the scene closes. Following a time jump, we meet a family, James (AJ Bowen) a father with cancer, Casey (Brea Grant) the mother, Jason (Joshua Hoffman) their son, their daughter Jessica (Sophie Dalah) and her friend (Elise Luthman) Becky on their way to a cabin. Not long after their arrival, they find a woman (Barbra Crampton) in the snow, after bringing her back to the cabin they learn they have made a fatal mistake. As the film plays out we see scenes from a crime series called “Inside Crime” where we learn that Casey killed her entire family, the family we are

Movie Review: ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’

WARNING SPOILERS!!! This weekend I stood in a line that almost completely wrapped around the theater to see Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. While I danced with excitement (literally) I looked around to see so many different generations of fans waiting to watch the film. It was heartwarming to see parents and kids, and even grandparents there rocking their dino themed gear. Let’s be honest, there are a few things we all expect from the Jurassic franchise, action, drama, and a whole lot of dinosaurs (the best part in my opinion), but the first part of Fallen Kingdom offered something else, heartbreak. As that island went up in smoke, ash, and lava, it took so many creatures with it. As the boat with those few saved sailed away we witnessed what might the most heartbreaking scene I have seen in a film in years, the island and animals being swallowed up. Just before Claire and Owen snuck onto the boat they

Movie Review: The Endless

Like a lot of people, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of The Endless from filmmakers Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson. IWhile the synopsis peaked my interest, I was not prepared for what I was about to see. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but the film was so much more. Spoilers Ahead! The film begins with two brothers, played by Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson, struggling to keep a roof over their heads and still coping with escaping a cult ten years earlier. After Justin (Benson) tires of his brother’s complaining and talk of the cult, he decides that the best way to shut him up by paying the cult a visit. Aaron (Moorhead) is more than willing to return to the isolated cult where they spent their childhood. Upon arriving, the brothers are greeted by an eerie cult member at the camp’s entrance with a strange, creepy extra-wide grin. Once they pull into camp they are welcomed

Movie Review: ‘Open Water 3: Cage Dive’ Stinks Worse Than Fish Bait

I will be the first to admit that I love anything that involves sharks, so I was excited when I learned that the next film of the Open Water franchise, titled Open Water 3: Cage Dive, was out on DVD. Written and directed by Gerald Rascionato, the film centers on a group of three friends, played by Josh Potthoff, Megan Hill, and Pete Valley, doing stunts to make an audition tape for a reality show. The group boards a shark cage diving tour in hopes of getting great footage for their audition. When a rogue wave takes out the boat they are left drifting in the shark-infested water. After night sets in they magically find an inflatable raft floating by with enough goodies to give them a fighting chance of getting rescued. But that doesn’t last long. My first issue with the movie is that there’s only one thing worse than found footage, found footage with terrible audio and this

Movie Review: ‘Corbin Nash’ Is The Best Vampire Film We’ve Seen In Years

When I first heard about Ben Jagger’s Corbin Nash, which he wrote with Dean Jagger, I assumed that it would be a decent little action-vampire movie. I was wrong. Corbin Nash was actually fantastic. In fact, it is the best vampire movie I’ve seen in years. In the beginning, Corbin Nash (Dean Jagger), a tough no-nonsense detective, learns from two family friends (Rutger Hauer, Bruce Davison) a long-hidden truth, that his murdered parents were vampire hunters. Nash digs into the mass missing person case he and his partner Frank (Chris Pardal (interview)) are working. When Corbin and Frank think they have spotted two kidnappers (Corey Feldman, Richard Wagner) they learn that not only are the two men kidnappers, they’re vampires. During the fight, the two detectives are knocked out. While Frank is left behind, Corbin wakes up to find himself trapped among other victims and is forced to fight to survive. After a fight, he’s left for dead on the
