Tubi Reviews: Last Rites of the Dead (2006) and Hellfire (2015)

Every now and then folks will clue me in to fright flicks they are associated with, and ask yours cruelly to give them the ol’ revoltin’ review treatment! One such case is this demonic duo, suggested to me by producer Frank Garfi… and if his name sounds familiar I reviewed another film he helped create, 2020’s Twisted Fiction (the review for which you can read right here)… so let’s dive into our first putrid picture, 2006’s zombie apocalypse with a twist, Last Rites of the Dead! Ol’ Angela (Gina Ramsden) is having a right shit night, to wit: her explosively violent boyfriend goes completely fuckin’ apeshit and blows her away as she cowers in a bathtub. Review: The “American Horror Stories” Premiere Feels Too Familiar

The AHS spin-off “American Horror Stories” has now premiered and is available on both FX and Hulu, and we’ve got thoughts. In the premiere, titled “Rubber(wo)Man”, a young woman (Sierra McCormick) and her two dads (Matt Bomer and Gavin Creel )move into the infamous “Murder House” from season one of “AHS.” Her dark killer instinct comes out as she discovers the gimp suit worn by Tate. You may remember that anyone who dies inside the house, has their spirit trapped there forever, that’s key to the story as the body count quickly rises in the premiere. “American Horror Stories” has been described as delving into “myths, legends, and more.” But we see none of that in the premiere. What we get is kill after kill that feels too familiar. It’s just like another episode of “Murder House,” but with a female serial killer instead of Tate. I can’t say I’m impressed. It never fails, if I see the words “based on a true story” and “shark” in the same sentence, I am automatically excited, so when I heard about director Martin Wilson’s Great White I had to see it. In the film, “seaplane operators and couple, Kaz Fellows (Katrina Bowden) and Charlie Brody (Aaron Jakubenko), along with their three passengers, Joji Minase (Tim Kano), his wife Michelle (Kimie Tsukakoshi), and hand Benny (Te Kohe Tuhaka) set out on a flight to the picturesque Hell’s Reef. Blu-ray Review: Spiral: From the Book of Saw

Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman’s (Saw II, Repo! The Genetic Opera), Spiral: from the Book of Saw is approaching Blu-ray and DVD release. I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release since the moment the news broke, I’ve long been a fan of Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, and Bousman. Last night, I grabbed some snacks and settled down to check it out. But did it live up to the hype? Warning! Spoilers The movie follows Zeke (Chris Rock), a detective who has long been an outcast in his precinct after he ratted out his partner for murdering an innocent man. Saddled with a new partner, Detective William Schenk (Max Minghella), Zeke is sent to a crime scene where a man was hung by his tongue before being hit by a train. Short Film Review: Elysia (2021)

Things start of hot n’ heavy in the new bite-sized monster morsel from director Wesley Mellott and co-writers Chloe Carroll, Elysia! As is the way of many a fang bang fright flick we get a lil’ of that ol’ Sapphic sensualness that scores high marks from ladies from the steno pool aged 24 – 45… and you lascivious lot as well, go on admit it! Anyway, vampire vixen Molly (the aforementioned Carroll) turns the comely (and eponymous) Elysia (Rachel Donahue) into one of her own, and they begin a life together that spans decades without either of them aging a single second… unlike Molly’s son who is now a real fossil of a geezer lying upon his deathbed. Six incredibly good-looking young folks are on their way to a football game, but they get sleepy and shit, so they camp out under the stars… where they encounter the ultimate evil! I’m just fucking with you… rather they rough it for a night, and the next morning they discover their car has shit the bed. A quick journey into the nearby town of Ambrose courtesy of a local yokel, where certainly a garage or service station will have them back on the road in no time! Well, that would be the case if anyone actually lived there. You see, Ambrose is complete Tumbleweedsville, minus the one structure that does seem to have a sign of life, the eponymous House of Wax… a dread domicile packed to the rafters with wax figures that seem just a tad too realistic! People keep rollin’ on up to small coastal town of Potters Bluff to find themselves tortured and murdered by some of the locals… who also happen to be film buffs judging by the amount of photo’s they take of their dastardly deeds! Enter: Sheriff Dan Gillis (James Farentino), who is gettin’ a tad bit worried that folks are turning-up looking like raw ass… plus his wife (Melody Anderson of 1980’s Flash Gordon fame) is acting bizarre as well.
