Movie Review: The Return

Set to be released this month, The Return follows Rodger who returns home from college with his best friend and girlfriend to settle the affairs of his recently deceased father. Soon they begin to witness strange and unsettling occurrences in the house. Rodger is plagued by strange childhood memories about being haunting by a ghostly presence. These memories boil over into reality culminating in an intense confirmation as a dark secret is uncovered. This indie film will have you convinced that you know what is happening. However, what’s really going on is very different. The twist is a nice touch and completely changes the film’s trajectory and makes the story much more interesting. It’s something we haven’t seen a million times. Richard Harmon delivers a convincing portrait of a young man haunted by too much death and his desperation to discover the truth behind his and his family’s past. I did find several of his emotional reactions a bit odd.

4K Ultra HD Review: Two Evil Eyes (1990)

Two Evil Eyes is an arcane anthology divided into two halves (it’s all there in the title folks), both directed by legendary horror directors (George A. Romero and Dario Argento for those keepin’ score at home) and based on the writing of Edgar Allan Poe (The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar and The Black Cat respectively). Let’s kick out the jams with Romero’s joint, shall we? Jessica Valdemar (Adrienne Barbeau) is what one would call “a reluctant shit-heel”; sure she’s conspiring with Dr. Robert Hoffman (Ramy Zada) to bilk her dying husband, Ernest (Bingo O’Malley) out of his vast fortune via hypnosis… but she doesn’t feel great about it, until the dough begins to be well in hand that is. Movie Review: The Suicide Squad Is A Fun Action-Packed Flick

I think that we can agree, 2016’s Suicide Squad wasn’t great. So when the new movie hit HBO Max this weekend, I had my doubts about it. So what did I do? I watched it. The film kicked off with a new squad headed to an island nation to take out a tower, but once they land on the beach, they discover that one of their squad has ratted them out and all hell breaks loose. What they don’t know is a second squad has landed on the island with the same mission, thankfully. As the team moves forward, they are sent to rescue Harley Quinn and Colonel Flagg after they are caught. While attempting to complete their mission of destroying the tower they discover a creature that’s out of this world as their loyalties are tested. In 2018, John Krasinski delivered A Quiet Place, which was hit with critics and viewers alike. Now, the sequel is coming to Blu-ray and DVD in just a few days. Movie Review: Old (2021)

M. Night Shyamalan takes us on a trip to an exotic location in his new horror movie Old, out today in theaters. The movie begins with two families on vacation at an all-inclusive resort, but both families are hiding something from their families. The two families set off for a remote private beach that seems like a dream come true, but it’s actually a nightmare as the families, along with several other people, begin to notice changes in the children and then themselves, they are rapidly aging. The first thing I have to mention is the casting. The children are played by multiple actors as they age and the casting was dead on. That’s a hard task to pull off, but Old nailed it. The cast of adults was another great choice. They really emote the terror and confusion that their characters are experiencing. Blu-ray Review: Initiation (2021)

When a girl is assaulted at a frat party during pledge week a series of murders strike the campus sending everyone into a panic in Initiation, from director John Berardo. One of the reasons the 90s were so epic for the horror genre was because of the amount and quality of slasher movies that were unleashed, movies like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream. Initiation feels like it is straight from that era, while still remaining current. Initiation delivers both great effects, an interesting story, and keeps the masked killer’s identity under wraps until the last possible moment, leaving you wondering who could be the man in the hoodie that loves power tools. And I must say, that the identity is a nice twist that I didn’t see coming, which is rare these days.
