Blu-ray Review: Desecration (1999)

Bobby (Danny Lopes) loses his mother while still an infant; an event which scrambles his eggs and leaves him off-kilter six ways to Sunday Bloody Sunday! Naturally he ends up inadvertently putting the murder on a nun via remote control airplane (as one does) which has the result of unleashing a supernatural hell upon the Catholic School, not to mention his devout Grandmother (played to the hilt by Irma St. Paule) he attends resulting in a nun sliced to ribbons by flying scissors, folks dropping into holes in the Earth that seemingly lead to hell, children’s toys falling from the ceiling, holy sisters becoming rather unholy…and then shit gets really, really weird! Will Bobby be able to survive this arcane assault, or will he become Hell’s newest poster child (and just what part does his dearly departed mother play in the supernatural scheme)?!! Directed with more atmospherics and fever dream imagery then one would deem humanly possible, writer/director/composer Dante Tomaselli

Movie Review: The Tooth Fairy (2018)

As family and friends gather on a failing rural farm, we learn that years previous they managed to capture an evil witch (the Tooth Fairy…I don’t even fucking know), and imprison her in the barn by way of sugar and dangling candy canes (sounds ridiculous, and it is…but you lot all know I dig on the absurd, so well played movie…well played). Well that seemingly fool proof prison is thwarted when a drifter simply opens the door and frees the wicked bitch of the west (after she chisels some of his teeth out of course). This results in her stalking and granting dark wishes (in exchange for teeth ‘natch) to the sad sack family…now, can they dispatch her once more and get on with their dreary lives? First the positives to be had with the Tooth Fairy. For starters, the dreary setting (always overcast and completely remote) is full atmosphere and a suitable aesthetic choice for the tale of a

Movie Review: Ouija Seance: The Final Game (2018)

Sarah’s livin’ high off the spaghett in the land of it’s birth…namely good ol’ Italy. Things are all wine n’ roses until our comely heroine learns she has inherited a rural villa…you know, the kind that any sane person would say “This shit is haunted, yo”…at least they should if they’ve ever laid putrid peepers on a fright flick that is. Anyway, Sarah and her friends move in, find a ouija board, then immediately put it back where they found it, and leave. Yeah right, these dipshits use that board and unleash unholy hell…as is always the way. Let’s chit chat about what works in Ouija Seance: The Final Game. Firstly, the film looks good; the Italian locales offer a unique touch, and the supernatural set dressing (the distinctive look of the titular board, ancient texts, et.al.) is suitably creepy. Additionally, the film skillfully presents the supernatural goings-on with plenty of arcane atmospherics…it’s just that the proceedings seem awfully familiar,

Fans Launch Petition To Save ‘Wayward Sisters’

“Supernatural” fans are some of the most dedicated fans out there, so when the pilot was ordered for the spin-off series “Wayward Sisters” they were overjoyed. Unfortunately, The CW has decided not to move forward with the series, even after the pilot aired back in January and was well received. The series would have centered on Jody Mills, Claire Novak, and their family of monster ass-kicking women in South Dakota. Now fans have started a petition to save the show, and it already has more than 71,000 signatures. Now, CW president Mark Pedowitz offered an explanation. We are big fans of the characters and the women who played those characters in the series, but we did not feel creatively that the show is where we wanted it to be, and we felt we had a better shot with Legacies.” “Legacies” is a spin-off of the hit series “The Originals”. “Legacies” will air on Thursdays following “Supernatural”.

Movie Review: House on Elm Lake (2017)

Stop me if you’ve heard this one; a young family gets a great deal on a beautiful home due in no small fact that the previous owner murdered his family in cold blood after being acted upon by some sort of demonic force…and wouldn’t you know it, the new patriarch starts hearing the same voices and begins thinking his family would look better inside an oblong box. That’s House on Elm Lake in a nutshell…it’s also The Amityville Horror, so you’ve definitely seen what this film has to offer…so why should you give it your time and/or money? You shouldn’t. It’s boring, tedious, filled with sub-par acting and dodgy effects, and it’s idea of scaring the audience is to amp up the volume of the soundtrack, or have a character scream. But, I’m not the type of guy to not have something positive to say about the film, so here goes; thank the powers that be that this film runs

Blu-ray Review: City of the Dead (1960)

Originally released on these shores as Horror Hotel (Misfits fiends, take note!), City of the Dead is the tale of Nan Barlow (Stevenson), a young co-ed who travels to New England to investigate witchcraft at the behest of her college professor (Lee). Upon arriving in the small town of Whitewood things are rather bizarre; but it goes from bad to worse when Nan is marked for sacrifice by a coven of witches. Now that sounds like my kind of vacation, my creeps! Dripping with atmosphere and rich Gothic overtones, The City of the Dead is a “can’t miss” fright flick classic! Fog enshrouded locales, dilapidated buildings, graveyards, sinister locals, arcane ceremonies — this one has got all you crave from the “old guard” style of horror storytelling. While the film is an undeniable monsterpiece, the extras on this release offer a few treats for fright fans! You get a commentary track (one with no less than Christopher Lee himself), an

Movie Review: Dinner With the Alchemist is A Full Course of Mystery and Magic!

At the dawn of the twentieth century, New Orleans is burdened with a terrible plague so consuming that the bodies of the victims are littering the streets. Times are understandably desperate….so desperate that Marie Laveau (grand daughter of the infamous voodoo priestess of the same name) can’t help…and if even voodoo is powerless you know you are well and truly in the shit. Before long the enigmatic alchemist Jacques St. Germaine arrives in town, and teams up with Marie to solve the pestilent problem. Having these two powerhouses of the arcane joining forces is fortuitous, as soon bodies (specifically those of prostitutes) begin turning up that are not the result of the disease, but rather the result of ritual rites involving the draining of blood. Soon seemingly half of New Orleans is trying to solve the case, from ham-fisted policeman to the residents of a local whorehouse, and as they try shocking secrets are revealed and innocent lives are caught

Movie Review: The Tag-Along 2 is a Spook Show with Gravitas!

The Tag-Along 2 begins with a highly effective cold open featuring a man menaced by a little girl who’s face seems to be constructed of an unholy combination of nightmare and pure terror (and the worst parts of both at that) in the deep dark woods! Following that we meet social worker Shu-fen (Rainie Yang), a woman dealing with both inexplicable cases (like the woman who keeps her rune covered daughter locked in a room filled with talismans to ward of the demons she is sure is coming for her offspring) and her knocked-up teenage daughter. After Shu-fen tries unsuccessfully to convince her daughter to get an abortion, the teen turns up missing…with surveillance cameras revealing she was led away by a mysterious child dressed in red. Soon the trail leads to a reportedly haunted forest (is it a spoiler to just say the damn thing actually is…I mean, look at the art for this fright flick…) which also happens

Movie Review: Butcher the Bakers Hits a Sweet Spot Between Laughs and Lacerations!

Where do grim reapers, who in this universe resemble WWF/E great The Undertaker (sans chapeau…yeah baby, that’s some culture for yo’ ass!) go when they are fired? Well, they go to any random small town where they commit acts of unspeakable murder to collect souls for their own sinister ends. Who can stand in this evil’s way? Why Sam and Martin, the mentally challenged employees of the local bakery ‘natch (they actually get hired by a bureaucrat in charge of the reapers to dispatch his wayward charge). Our heroes soon armor up (in ridiculously homemade fashion) and tackle the monstrous menace head on…but can these two idiots overcome a preternatural presence of unimaginable destructiveness? Butcher the Bakers is that rare breed of picture…one that can deftly balance gore and guffaws…well, eventually (more on that in a bit my creeps). Let’s start, as always, with what works in this flick…’cuz puppies and rainbow style positively is the Daniel XIII hallmark! First
