Paul Bateson: The Serial Killer Who Starred In ‘The Exorcist’

Did you know that a real-life serial killer starred in The Exorcist? In 1972, director William Friedkin saw Paul Bateson perform a cerebral angiography in the New York University radiology lab. Wanting to keep things as real as possible, when Friedkin was making The Exorcist the next year, he arranged for the same procedure to be filmed in a hospital by real doctors and technicians. Friedkin was impressed by the way Bateson performed the real procedure the year before and invited him to be included in the scene as a radiographer not knowing of his crimes. Born in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, he was the son of a metallurgist. In the early 60s, he joined the Army and became an alcoholic while serving in Germany. When his service came to an end, he returned to Lansdale before moving to New York in 1964 where he began living a double life, working as a radiologist during the day, and exploring his sexuality and

“Helter Skelter” Film ‘The Other Side Of Madness’ Being Rereleased For 50th Anniversary

The Film Detective (TFD), a classic media streaming network and film archive that restores and distributes classic films for today’s cord-cutters, announces the restoration and re-release of the first and one of the most sensational accounts of the vicious “Helter Skelter” murders, The Other Side of Madness (1971), the inaugural title in a series of TFD releases from The Wade Williams Collection. Available on limited-edition Blu-ray or DVD Nov. 10—marking the 50th anniversary of its original release—The Other Side of Madness was the first cinematic depiction of the Manson murders, filmed so astonishingly close to the time of the events that the Manson trial was still in progress. Portrayed as a modern “noir,” it proved so shocking to audiences at the time that the film was banned in Los Angeles. Superbly photographed and directed by award-winning filmmaker Frank Howard and produced by Wade Williams, the film was partially shot in Kansas City with a cast of mostly unknown actors. However,

Blu-ray Review: Dahmer (2002)

Remember when mother fuckin’ Hawkeye played (literal) man-eater Jeffrey Dahmer? Yeah, me freakin’ either… but he did, so here we are! The long and the short of Dahmer goes as follows: going out of his way to prove he’s no Willy fuckin’ Wonka, chocolate factory worker Jeffrey Dahmer (Jeremy Renner) prowls Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for young male victims to turn into brain dead (and eventually dead dead) sexual playthings. Along the way, he reminisces about earlier murder biz, and his relationship with his pappy (Willard himself, Bruce Davison) who thinks something is off about his boy, but isn’t sure just what. It’s non-stop spills and thrills as we learn just what this serial killin’ scamp was up to before his ass got thrown in the hole forever and a day… Besides boasting a gritty, almost grindhouse style (in terms of aesthetic if not on screen carnage) the main draw to this flick is the performance of Renner who manages to make

Rodney Alcala: The Dating Game Killer

Before the days of YouTube, Netflix and other at-your-fingertips entertainment, staying home sick from school consisted of watching daytime TV. My personal favorite when I was resting on the couch was watching game shows (I loved The Price is Right). I often wondered how people were chosen for participate on the shows, what they did after their 15-minutes of fame, and who they were off the show. For the audience watching The Dating Game in 1978, they didn’t know that they were watching a serial rapist/murderer/child molester with over 100 possible victims. Rodney James Alcala was born Rodrigo Jacques Alcala Buquor on August 23, 1943. This man had some of the best luck I have ever read about and the disgusting failures of law enforcement and the judicial system led to so many more victims suffering at the hands of this monster. Alcala’s family life, like many killers, was not ideal. His father, Raoul, left when Alcala was about 11

Jackpots And Jail Time: The Greatest Casino Heists Of The 21st Century

For most of us, a casino is a place of entertainment, thrills, and a chance to win big. However, for others, it can pose a very different opportunity altogether. In the past, before the days of advanced technology, casinos were locations that carried more money than a bank, scattered across roulette tables and in the bellies of slot machines. It’s no wonder, therefore, that they’ve seen some of the most daring heists committed inside their ornate halls. Here are just a few of the best. Mr. Casino Richard Taylor’s crimes were unique because he chose to avoid the ‘big score’ and instead, opted to take a longer-term approach to theft from the casino. Taylor was so successful, in fact, that he ended up earning the moniker ‘Mr. Casino’. His targets of choice were the high-roller craps players. Richard masterminded a complex network of complicit dealers and players who allowed the smaller rule breaches to happen, apparently unnoticed to them. Richard’s
