After nearly a two-year wait, season two of Netflix’s hit series “The Witcher” finally made its premiere earlier this month much to the joy of fans, including this one.

The series picks up with monster slayer Geralt (Henry Cavill) fighting to protect his “Child Surprise” Princess Ciri (Freya Allen), who is now technically his daughter, from both monsters and men as she is hunted by multiple kingdoms who want to use her to claim her throne or to kill her because they are threatened by her immense power.  Ciri is also the target of Geralt’s love interest Yennefer (Anya Charalto) who lost her powers in the first season. Yennifer aims to deliver Ciri to an ancient witch with the hope of trading her to get her powers back.

The season we get a deeper story and we get more insight into the characters as well as into the world of Elves as they suffer and try to secure a new home for their people only to find treachery in their new alliance as a war between the North and South rages. Alliances are formed and broken giving the season a heavy dose of drama.

Season two reveals just how much attachment Geralt has to Ciri as well as to Yennifer. We see a somewhat softer side of Geralt. There’s more emotion this season as well as a ton of action and fighting, and we see new monsters, but the message it drives home is that humans are the real monsters. It also teaches us just how important family is, no matter if it is born out of blood or by honor.

Henry Cavill does not disappoint as Geralt. Every actor is remembered for a particular, landmark role, this is his. The rest of the key characters get more development and backstories are revealed. Allen really shines this season as Ciri, giving an excellent performance as Ciri’s determination to protect herself leads her to train with the Witchers and as she begins to learn to use her powers. As for Yennifer, if you didn’t like her last season be prepared to hate her even more as her scheming ways and deceitful behavior reach a whole new level in season two.

This show has something for everyone, a great story, action, love, horror, amazing characters, and fantastic special effects. The world “The Witcher” creates is dark and brutal and filled with death, but beauty can be found along the path our characters take.

The good news is “The Witcher”, which I feel is one of the best shows on Netflix, has already been renewed for season three, hopefully, it won’t take two years to get it.  Watch “The Witcher” season one and season 2 now on Netflix. Also, be sure to check out the upcoming prequel series “The Witcher: Blood Origin” which takes us back to when it all began.
