Kaiju fans, get ready to rumble again! Prime Video is officially reopening the breach to the Anteverse. That live-action “Pacific Rim” TV series from Legendary Television has now found its home on Amazon’s streaming service. According to Variety, Legendary is teaming up with Amazon MGM Studios, which brought us hits like “Reacher,” “Fallout,” and “The Boys.” So you know they’ve got the giant-monster-fighting chops.
Eric Heisserer, the Oscar-nominated writer behind the beloved Netflix series “Shadow and Bone,” will steer this as-yet-untitled “Pacific Rim” prequel series. He’ll serve as both writer and executive producer.
For a quick refresher, Legendary Pictures was behind Guillermo del Toro’s fantastic 2013 Pacific Rim movie. It introduced us to the Pan Pacific Defense Corps rangers who piloted those incredible, mentally-linked robots called Jaegers to go toe-to-massive-claw with the Kaiju – colossal beasts that were stomping their way to Earth through a portal in the Pacific Ocean, all the way from their home dimension, the Anteverse. A sequel, Steven S. DeKnight’s Pacific Rim Uprising, followed in 2018, giving us more Jaeger-on-Kaiju action.
Interestingly, the report also mentions that this new series doesn’t rule out the possibility of a Pacific Rim 3 movie down the line. Legendary TV also kept the franchise alive with two seasons of the Netflix anime series “Pacific Rim: The Black” between 2021 and 2022, showing there’s still a hunger for this universe.
The fact that Amazon is diving back into the Pacific Rim universe with a prequel series is definitely exciting news. Get ready for more Jaeger-on-Kaiju action, folks – the portal is reopening, and who knows what it will bring in the future.
If you’re craving Kaiju action, you can relive the movies by now streaming Pacific Rim and Pacific Rim: Uprising.
