Move over, Cocaine Bear and Meth Gator! There’s a new apex predator in town, and it doesn’t need a drug habit to be terrifying. Aura Entertainment has unleashed the first trailer for Hungry, a survival thriller that proves the most dangerous thing in the Louisiana bayou isn’t the humidity or the alligators; it’s a very cranky, very large hippopotamus.
Written and directed by James Nunn (the man behind the One Shot trilogy and Shark Bait), this intense film promises an action-packed wild ride this summer.
A Sightseeing Tour from Hell
The film follows a group of thrill-seeking tourists who decide a standard riverboat tour is too “mainstream.” They are lured off the beaten path by the promise of an exclusive, “authentic” adventure. However, they quickly learn why some paths aren’t meant to be taken.
They soon find themselves shipwrecked and fighting for survival against a ravenous hippo lurking beneath the murky waters. It’s a high-stakes battle of wits between a group of tourists and several tons of semi-aquatic fury that can outrun, outswim, and definitely out-chomp anything in its path.
The Cast of Potential Snacks
The ensemble features a mix of genre veterans and rising stars ready to get their boots muddy. Madison Davenport: Known for Sharp Objects and It’s What’s Inside, she leads the group’s desperate fight for dry land. Joaquim de Almeida brings his signature gravitas from Fast X and Road House. Then, there’s Tracey Bonner (Sweet Magnolias, The Exorcism), Jim Meskimen (Apollo 13), and Michel Curiel (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law). The cast is rounded out by Olivia Bernstone, Samantha Coughlan, and River Codack.
Fun Fact: Why Hippos are Horror Gold
While movies usually focus on sharks or crocodiles, hippos are statistically one of the deadliest land mammals in the world, responsible for roughly 500 deaths per year in Africa. They are highly territorial, surprisingly fast (hitting speeds of 30 km/h), and possess a bite force of 1,800 psi—enough to snap a boat (or a tourist) like a dry twig.
If you’re looking for a reason to cancel your next swamp tour, Hungry is it. Mark your calendars for June 23—and maybe stay out of the water.
