Let’s be honest, we horror fans are used to waiting years for sequels, but that’s not the case for 28 Years Later: Bone Temple. Sony Pictures just dropped the first trailer and confirmed that the movie is coming to theaters in January 2026. This is the fourth installment in the beloved 28 Days Later franchise and a direct sequel to 28 Years Later, which saw the original dream team of director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland reunite.
What the Trailer Reveals
This new movie was directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman), and it looks like a can’t-miss event. The trailer opens with a classic, old-fashioned recording talking about how impossible it is to predict the future. We see a train full of people. We then see the same train, now empty and eerily quiet after the Rage virus has destroyed the British Isles.
The trailer gives us a good look at some familiar faces, including Alfie Williams as Spike, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Jamie, and Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Ian Kelson. But the most exciting part? Cillian Murphy is back as his original 28 Days Later character, Jim! The trailer spends a lot of time with Dr. Kelson, who is seen using a hand-cranked generator and seemingly finding a glimmer of humanity in the Alpha Infected, played by Chi Lewis-Parry.
The second half of the trailer shifts focus to Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) and his strange cult. These guys wear creepy masks and tie up prisoners, adding a whole new layer of terror to the film. The two storylines collide when one of Jimmy’s cult members, Jimmy Ink (Erin Kellyman), finds Dr. Kelson. The final shot is a chilling one, with Sir Jimmy asking a terrified-looking Spike, “Are you ready?”
Human Drama and Non-Stop Zombie Action
From the looks of it, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is keeping the same vibe as its predecessor. It will focus on the intense human drama rather than just non-stop zombie action. However, with Sir Jimmy and his cult in the mix, it’s clear the horror is getting amped up in a big way.
Get ready to witness the next installment of the iconic franchise when it hits theaters on January 16, 2026.
