Game Review: Stay Out of the House (2023) – Nintendo Switch

In an effort to make us experience first-hand the kind of terror present in the sinister slashers that appeared just a tick before the genre’s Golden Age, Puppet Combo brings us Stay Out of the House; a new vicious video game now available on the Nintendo Switch. In direct defiance of the games title, your ass definitely does not want to Stay Out of the House, in fact it won’t be much of a game if you do! Rather, after playing through a couple of prologue stories (which aren’t mandatory, but naturally they add considerably to the world building at hand while offering a tense yet less intense experience than the main event… and one of them has a playable, Driller Killer-esque arcade game, so HUGE fuckin’ plus there boils n’ ghouls) you make your way to the eponymous structure, in which you will stealthy avoid the cannibals (including hiding from them underneath various pieces of furniture) that call the

Movie Review: The Devil’s Left Hand (2023)

You know what’s worse than one of those baby gender reveal parties where like half the guests get burned or some such shit? Try a housewarming party with a séance as the entertainment, during which the Medium is more than touched by a literal goddamned demon (redundant, I know… ). Speaking of that demon; that one man (monster?) Satanic Panic… who is also a shape-shifter, but more on that in a bit… makes it a malevolent mission to stalk n’ slay every attendee of that supernatural soaked soiree! How many of these fine folks have R.S.V.P.’d to their own demise, or can they solve the mystery of the evil that wants them extinct?!! So, what’s the good word with Harley Wallen’s The Devil’s Left Hand? Well, it’s a polished, suspenseful preternatural picture, so there’s that! Remember that shape-shifting bit I mentioned up yonder? It provides a shit-ton of suspense (also which was just mentioned for the forgetful among you) because,

Movie Review: Evil Dead Rise (2023) – Warner Bros. 4K UHD

Hey, check this out cats n’ creeps; a group of young adults are frolicking in nature’s splendor when some ancient evil entity possesses one of the gang who then transforms into a demonic killing machine! Business as usual for most of the Evil Dead franchise… Now what isn’t business as usual for an Evil Dead flick is where the story of Evil Dead Rise takes us next, namely an apartment building located in a city (which would be business as usual for Lamberto Bava’s Demons 2 however… ). Anyway, said building is currently the residence of one Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland), an industrious tattoo artist and single mom of three, namely near-perfect, creatively minded siblings Danny, Bridget, and Kassie (played by Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, and Nell Fisher respectively), as well as Ellie’s free wheelin ‘ (and free loadin’) sister Beth (Lily Sullivan)… but only temporarily as hard times have necessitated the family hitting the bricks in the immediate future. Before

Movie Review: What the Waters Left Behind: Scars (2022) – Cleopatra Blu-ray

The Ravens, a hard rock rock outfit are stuck playing small gigs in shitty venues, such as the one they currently played down Falkland Islands way. Tired from rockin’ and rollin’… and drinkin’ and snortin’, The Ravens agree to follow a sexy fan back to her parents pad in the country for a lil’ rest and relaxation… a journey that takes them through a decimated Argentinian city that was completely destroyed by a flood a few decades past. As you may have surmised, the family in question, literally the only living beings in the entire post-apocalyptic area, are complete psychos who are all too ready to welcome their latest victims to their home. What survival skills does a substance-battered rock band possess, and will it be enough for them to make it alive with their skins intact? Coming from director Nicolás Onetti and writer Camilo Zaffora, What the Waters Left Behind: Scars is a strong, terror filled experience who’s production

Movie Review: The Plaga Zombie Trilogy (1997 – 2011) – Intervision/Severin

There is nothin’ yours cruelly enjoys more than sittin’ down to some previously unseen, S.O.V. horror… and that is precisely what I have here with Intervision’s release of The Plaga Zombie Trilogy, a series of Argentinian gut-munchers of the zero budget kind! Things kick of with 1997’s Plaga Zombie: Ex-med student Bill (Pablo Parés, who also co-directed the film) trims his bush one night oblivious to the fact that his roommate is abducted (and experimented on) by aliens. Meanwhile, Bill’s old friend, John West (Berta Muñiz, who co-wrote the film along with Parés, and Hernán Sáez… who also co-directed… and let me just say; this dude is comedy dynamite), is longing to revive his cowboy-themed wrestling career, but his manager/tag-team partner has a case of the “feel like shit”s. Thankfully for none of them, (not really a) Doctor Bill is on the case, so soon those two are toast and soon become members of the alien plague-ridden shambling dead that

Movie Review: McBain (1991) – Synapse Blu-ray

Back in the final days of the Vietnam, a group of soldiers are shipping off for home make a pitstop to rescue some P.O.V.’s who’s ranks include the eponymous McBain (Christopher Walken, who I’m sure every single person reading this knows damn well who he is and what he’s been in… shit, it would have been quicker to just type a few titles… ). Anyway, said McBain is currently in the middle of a cage match against a dude that could only be unbelievably described as “The Vietnamese Rambo” when he’s liberated by Santos (Chick Vennera) and his troops (who’s ranks include the American Ninja series’ Steve James, The Warriors/The Thing‘s Thomas G. Waites, and Scanners/Starship Troopers‘ Michael Ironside among their numbers). Speaking of “Santos” and “liberation” in the same sentence; flash forward 18 years and the man is executed trying to lead a revolution to over throw a corrupt regime down Columbia way. So what does his sister, Christina

Movie Review: Renfield (2023) – Universal Blu-ray

Ah Renfield (Nicholas Hoult, the X-Men series, Mad Max: Fury Road), that bug chomping, eternal servant of Dracula. So what is our man up to? Well, mostly attending therapy group sessions where he tries to deal with his co-dependent, abusive relationship with his boss, the undying Lord of Darkness. Speaking of those sessions, ol’ Renfield, takes it upon himself to get a lil’ revenge for one of his peers, Caitlyn ( Bess Rous) and decides to pay a visit to her shit of a boyfriend… a boyfriend who just stole a shit-ton of blow from the local crime family, The Lobos. This lands him in the middle of a war between the police, spearheaded by Rebecca (Awkwafina) a traffic cop with lofty ambitions and a personal score to settle with the Lobo clan, and that dastardly crime family itself… which leads to precious little time to bring his desiccated boss back to full strength. Will Renfield be able to ever

Movie Review: Day Zero (2022) – Well Go USA Blu-ray

The Philippines are entering one of those pesky virus-induced zombie apocalypses that can always turn a sunny day into a shit maelstrom, and so is the case here… soon… but first… Ex-U.S. Special Forces operative/man-mountain Emon (MMA ass-kicker Brandon Vera) is looking forward to seeing his family as his sterling prison record has resulted in his chance at parole. Unfortunately, some assholes fuck that up for him right proper by picking a fight with our hero… but since the city, including the apartment his family calls home sweet home, is currently chock full of lightning-fast, rabid, plague-bringers I’d say that’s some silver lining shit right there cats n’ creeps… Anyhow, Emon soon finds himself a free man, as all of the prison’s inmates are set free in the chaos, and he immediately begins the journey home as those creepy creatures attempt to hinder his ass at every turn! Will Emon make it home before his family get turned into more

Movie Review: The Tank (2023) – Well Go USA Blu-ray

Back in the late 1970’s, ol’ Ben (Matt Whelan) inherits some property down Oregon way. So before you can say “Shitty idea”, Ben packs the fam and heads off to that newly acquired property. Naturally, the house the family is set to move in looks creepy as all hell, and despite the beautiful view, the place would be avoided by anyone with half a brain cell in real life… and that’s not even factoring in the bizarre water feature, the eponymous tank, sure to detract even more value from the dread domicile. From there we get some Horror Tropes 101 as we get a blast of bumps in the night, dark family secrets, a legacy of missing persons, and mysterious creatures. Will Ben and his brood survive their wicked windfall, or will the secrets of the house be their demise?! Lets get the elephant in the room out of the way first; writer/director Scott Walker walks some familiar ground with

Movie Review: Bone Cold (2022) – Well Go USA Blu-ray

Writer/director Billy Hanson‘s Bone Cold begins with a real Debbie Downer of a sitch; namely snipers Jon (Jonathan Stoddard) and Marco (Matt Munroe) try and return to the day-to-day of family life after completing some top secret wet-work down Afghanistan way, but that ol’ double punch of guilt and PTSD make it tough going. They don’t have long to get all domestic-like however as they are soon sent on a new mission to stop Russian military activity in the Ukraine. The mission goes tits-up however, as our lads accidentally kill a civilian bringing military down upon them post-fucking-haste! That would be a bad day under any circumstances but it just so happens to be another wicked wrinkle in the Black Ops as a vicious creature stalks the surrounding forests, and this thing is pissed to all hell and back! Bone Cold is a tight lil’ creature feature for sure, but let me tell ya my cats n’ creeps, it has
