Heritage Auctions Unleashes A Horde Of Vintage Horror Comics At Upcoming Auction

Whether you’re an avid collector of rare, pre-code horror comics or just someone who enjoys reading about Spider Man duking it out with Count Dracula, this Sunday’s upcoming internet comic sale from Heritage Auctions will have something for you. Though the auction giant holds weekly internet sales in their comics/comic art department, this one stands out due to the plethora of near-forgotten horror titles from the “anything goes” days before the Comics Code toned down comic book terror. No issues of beloved EC titles like ‘Tales from the Crypt’ or ‘The Haunt of Fear’ are on offer, but in their place collectors can find slabbed and CGC-graded issues of highly sought rarities ‘Beware’, ‘Chamber of Chills’, ‘The Thing!’, ‘Out of the Night’, and several others. Also on the auction block are multiple issues of Neil Gaiman’s seminal ‘Sandman’, Marvel’s ‘Tomb of Dracula’, ‘The Munsters’ from Gold Key, and a copy of Marvel Spotlight #5, which features the first appearance of

Is ‘The Mummy’ As Bad As Everyone Says?

Yes. Yes it is. ………But I think its worth watching anyway, as a lesson in how not to make a horror movie, if nothing else. Studio horror rightfully gets a lot of shit, and The Mummy might just be the perfect example of a production studio that doesn’t have a fucking clue what horror fans want. But what this disaster-piece really does is show how little faith studios have in horror at all. Despite films like The Conjuring grossing over $300 Million dollars, film producers still don’t believe horror has the drawing power that more traditional Blockbuster and action films do. So rather than anything close to a horror movie, The Mummy is instead a big budget Tom Cruise action film, the start of a cinematic universe no less (on a related note, has anyone outside of Marvel even come close to a halfway watchable cinematic universe?) Never mind the fact that the mummy is a monster with literally thousands

Sigourney Weaver Again Battles Otherworldly Menace In Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Rakka’

After Neill Blomkamp‘s failed attempt at adding a fifth installment to the ‘Alien’ franchise, the visionary sci-fi director announced the creation of his own film production company, Oats Studios. The first offering from the studio is the short ‘Rakka’, a gritty, post-apocalyptic alien invasion film set in the near future. The film opens somewhere in Texas, in the year 2020. From the outset, each frame absolutely oozes an ultra-bleak, dystopian atmosphere. The world as we know it is no more; in its place is a brutal hellscape in which nearly all of humanity (well, what’s left of it anyhow) is enslaved by a barbaric, if highly advanced species of reptilian extraterrestrials. The aliens erect monolithic mega structures used to generate an atmosphere suitable for their crops and breathing needs, and treat humans as test subjects, or pests to be eliminated. Though primitive in appearance, the aliens seem to possess telekinetic and telepathic abilities, allowing them to use mind control to

Film ‘The Answer’ Is A Surprisingly Great Thriller

One of my favorite parts about this job is the fact that here and there I get to watch movies that I would have otherwise been oblivious to. I love the fact that I get exposed to new directors, new actors, new plots and new movies before the lay audience. I admit, sometimes those movies I watch should have remained in oblivion, but that is not the case with Iqbal Ahmed’s thriller ‘The Answer’. The first item to address complaint about this film is the “Saw meets The Fugitive” tagline in the press release. I can get on board with it being akin to ‘The Fugitive’ but I didn’t really see any parallels or even allusions to ‘Saw’. That, however, is not a bad thing, but misleading. I found the film to be and they even squeezed in a little romance (but I’ll talk more about that last one later). I have actually found it somewhat difficult to do a

‘TSUNAMBEE’ Buzzes In From Beyond The Grave

So you’ve seen killer bee movies, and you’ve seen zombie movies, but have you ever seen a killer bee zombie movie? I didn’t think so, but that’s the crazy genre blending TSUNAMBEE is going to get you. Starring a diverse cast of gangbangers and hillbillies, not to mention roving hordes of undead insects, anyone looking to get a trashy fix of murderous bug action could do a lot worse. The film isn’t perfect, and at times the films low budget shines through (there are a lot of scenes featuring folks standing around and chatting, not so many of the killer bees themselves) but it has a zany sense of energy that more polished affairs are often missing. TSUNAMBEE is currently available on VOD and Horrorfuel will be featuring an interview with the director next week. So go ahead and get your buzz on, and give TSUNAMBEE a watch.

Woman (In Horror) Crush Wednesday: Jessica Cameron

So, my Little Monsters, I had an actress (who will remain nameless until next week) picked out for this week’s celebration of a wonderful Woman of Horror, BUT at the last minute I decided to changed direction completely. The previous actress I had chosen is well known to horror and mainstream audiences alike, so I decided to show a little love to an indie horror darling. That’s why today I’m focusing my attention on the lovely and talented, miss Jessica Cameron. Jessica was born in Owen Sound, Ontario, where she lived until her graduation from high school. With a keen interest in fashion, she then decided to move to Toronto where it became the focus of her studies at Ryerson University. Upon completion of her degree, Jessica secured a position with a fashion design firm in Ohio. During this time, she began taking acting classes and discovered she may have found her true passion. And in pursuit of said passion

Alice Cooper Continues To Terrify With New Album

At 69 years old, The King of Shock Rock, The Master of Musical Macabre, Detroit’s Demon of Darkness, Alice Cooper has a new album. I know, when Cooper first burst onto the scene with his group ‘The Spiders’ he looked like a malnutritioned freak who couldn’t sing and wouldn’t last a year (either because he would fail in the music world or die due to some chemical use). But 54 years and 25 (now 26) albums later – not including guest appearances and group projects like “Hollywood Vampires’ – Cooper is still going strong and still as dementedly decadent as always. By his own admission, Cooper has survived this ling because he was successfully able to separate the character of Alice Cooper and the man who created him. In his off time, Cooper golfs, hangs out with grandchildren and substitute teaches a Sunday-School class. But when that iconic makeup goes on, it is no holds barred horror. The first single,

‘Death Pool’ Dives onto DVD and VOD June 20th

Those who like a little murder with their sun and fun having something to look forward to on June 20th with the release of Death Pool. While I’m not sure if hot young Pool Cleaners exist outside of porno’s, Death Pool turns one into a killer with its main man Johnny Taylor (god that’s a great name for a killer.) I’m not sold yet on a Slasher based around drowning (the gore hound in me needs some blood to wet my appetite), but Death Pool doesn’t look half bad. There’s a fine line between goofy and scary with films like this though, so we’ll just have to wait until the 20th to see whether Death Pool will make a splash or sink to the bottom.
