Australian horror comedy Sissy is a delight, addressing social media culture and bullying as it delivers large shares of laughter and gore. Cecilia (Aisha Dee) has 200,000 followers on her self-help “Sincerely Cecilia” channel, on which she leads meditation practices and plugs paid sponsors. When she randomly runs into childhood best friend Emma (Hannah Barlow) at a pharmacy, she is obviously uncomfortable, though Emma seems genuinely glad to see her, and invites Cecilia — formerly known as Sissy — to her hens party (bachelorette party). Cecilia arrives, only to find out that Alex (Emily De Margheriti), who bullied Cecilia as a child, is also in attendance. A violent occurrence between the two took place when they were youngsters, and Alex isn’t about to let “Sissy” forget it. Humor ranging from the uncomfortable to the jaw-dropping ensues, as old wounds are opened — quite literally, in one scene — and one deadly deed leads to another. Some Like It Rare French horror comedy Some Like It Rare (Barbaque; 2021) finds that bickering, sexless married couple true-crime-addict Sophie (Marina Foïs) and couch-potato Vincent (writer/director Fabrice Eboué) Pascal have fallen on hard times with their butcher shop, but an incident involving one of a group of vegans who trash their business turns into accidental success when some of the victim’s body parts are accidentally sold to customers. This new item — which Vincent dubs “Iranian pork” — becomes an instant hit. How can the Pascals capitalize on this financial rejuvenation? You can probably guess, but knowing where things are headed in that instance doesn’t hurt Some Like It Rare one bit. A new clip from the supernatural horror comedy Jethica is here ahead of its World Premiere at this month’s SXSW. In the clip two friends argue over the identity of a man behaving strangely. Is it Kevin? In the film, hiding out in New Mexico after a freak accident, Elena runs into Jessica, an old friend from high school. When Jessica’s stalker suddenly shows up at their door, they must seek help from beyond the grave to get rid of him, for good. The film marks the third feature from Pete Ohs, one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 2013 ‘25 New Faces of Independent Film’ and co-director of the award-winning Julia Garner lead sci-fi fable Everything Beautiful Is Far Away. The Strange Monster at the Rivera House In this Puerto Rican horror short, neighbors of a woman (Aidita Encarnación) are desperate to communicate with — or through — a mysterious presence in her garage. Writer/director Estaban Bailey has crafted a chilling work that takes place during a hot summer day — not a usual setting for a horror tale, but this enigmatic short is no usual tale. Well acted and eerie, The Strange Monster at the Rivera House (El Extraño en La Casa Rivera) is a nifty slice of short-shock cinema Pare Writer/director Lauren Sick’s Pare is a terrific Christmas-set chiller in which a young woman (Dana Drori) comes across a blood-stained jacket that looks suspiciously like one that belongs to her husband. Found footage and POV horror and science fiction aficionados, take note! The fifth edition of the Unnamed Footage Festival is chock full of intriguing entries in the subgenre, from alien encounters to demonic terror to slasher attacks and beyond. The festival takes place from March 17-20 in San Francisco. Following is the official press announcement. After a year in cyber captivity, the Unnamed Footage Festival is returning to theaters of San Francisco for four days of found footage horror, faux documentary, and first person POV programming from March 17th through March 20th. Opening night will be held at the screening room of the Mission District gallery Artist’s Television Access, followed by a late-night screening at the Roxie Theatre on Friday, and culminating at the historic Balboa Theater for two full days of shorts and features. Leonardo Interactive and Invader Studios have announced that a demo of their upcoming 3rd-person horror game Daymare: 1994 Sandcastle will be joining the lineup at this year’s Steam Next Fest. The game is the prequel to Daymare: 1998 and the demo will be free to play from February 21st to February 28th. Daymare: 1994 Sandcastle will take players to a secret research lab as Special Agent H.A.D.E.S. Dalila Reyes, who must survive the horrors that await her. Using advanced weaponry, Dalila must solve environmental puzzles, and manage inventory all the while facing dangers that can come from any direction. The game is being touted as a homage to the classic 90’s survival horror games and will have something in store for fans of the previous game and new fans alike. Daymare: 1994 Sandcastle will be released later this year for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
