Brutal New Clip Arrives Ahead Of The Premiere Of ‘The Last Thing Mary Saw’ On Shudder

Ahead of its release this week, Shudder unveiled a new clip, titled Knees And Prayers” from their dark original film The Last Thing Mary Saw. In it, we see the brutal religious punishment of the two stars as they are forced to pray on their knees as rice is ground between the flesh of their knee caps and the hard floor, which is excruciatingly painful. This period horror-thriller stars Stefanie Scott (Insidious: Chapter 3), Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan), and Rory Culkin (Waco, Halston). The Last Thing Mary Saw was written and directed by Edoardo Vitaletti, who is making his feature debut. Set in Southold, New York, in 1843: Young Mary (Scott), who has blood trickling from behind the blindfold tied around her eyes, is interrogated about the events surrounding her grandmother’s death. As the story jumps back in time, we witness Mary, raised in a repressively religious household, finding fleeting happiness in the arms of Eleanor (Fuhrman), the home’s maid. Her

Movie Review: “Warhunt” (2022)

Movie Review: “Warhunt” (2022)

If you’re in the mood for a testosterone-fueled fright-fare outing in which World War II soldiers battle a coven of shape-shifting witches, complete with not one, but two scenery-chewing officers including one such portrayal by Mickey Rourke, you’re in luck. Warhunt delivers in those departments, and though it has its setbacks, it’s entertaining throughout. Rourke plays Major Johnson (that name has to be intentional humor), an eyepatched U.S. officer who has a group of soldiers go into enemy territory to retrieve the secret contents of a downed aircraft in 1945 Germany. The sergeant (Robert Knepper) in command of the troops is leery of Johnson’s handpicked proxy to accompany the group, surveyor Walsh (Jackson Rathbone). He is also skeptical when rumors of witchcraft start sifting through his troops. Meanwhile, Johnson is on safer ground, working with codebreakers on cracking an archaic Germanic code. If it is seduction by witches and plenty of bloodletting and nightmarish illusions you want, it is plenty

Netflix Movie Review: The Wasteland (AKA El Paramo)

Netflix Movie Review: The Wasteland (AKA El Paramo)

A desolate landscape stretches for miles surrounding a 19th-century home of a poor family, in The Wasteland. A mother (Inma Cuesta) spends her days teaching her son (Asier Flores) how to plant a garden, how to play games, and songs as his emotionally unavailable father (Roberto Alamo) tends to the more gruesome acts of making sure his family is fed with no help because the mother does not want her son’s innocence corrupted. As the three sit by a fire, the father tells his son of a legend, of “the beast” that killed the boy’s aunt. A tall entity with hallow eyes that comes for those that are weak, those who have fear. In other words, it’s his way of telling his son to man up. When the father must leave on a mission, his wife and son are left behind to fend for themselves. It doesn’t take long for them to begin seeing “the beast”. Soon they are locked

Movie Review: “The Legend of La Llorona” (2022)

Movie Review: “The Legend of La Llorona” (2022)

At least the third in a recent group of fear-fare films dealing with the “weeping woman” ghost from Mexican folklore, The Legend of La Llorona is well made but fails to deliver any original shudders. Carly Candlewood (Autumn Reeser) reluctantly goes on a trip to Mexico with her husband Andrew (Antonio Cupo) and their young son Danny (Nicolas Madrazo), which Andrew has planned so that he and his wife might reconnect both emotionally and physically after the death of their baby girl. As cinematic fate would have it, their lodging is a mere short walk away from the stomping grounds of the titular spirit, who seeks out children to replace the one she lost in life. Jose Prendes’ screenplay has some issues, including the relationship and dialogue between Carly and Andrew. Both characters come off initially as highly unlikable — she as an over-the-top characterization of a grieving mother and he as a selfish, hard-headed jerk — and by the
