Spoiler Free Review: ‘Pet Sematary: Bloodlines’

From director Lindsey Anderson Beer comes Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, the prequel to the 1989 classic Stephen King adaptation that taught us that “sometimes dead is better.” Set in 1969, a young Jud Crandall has dreams of leaving his hometown of Ludlow, Maine, behind but soon discovers sinister secrets buried within and is forced to confront a dark family history. Banding together, Jud and his childhood friends must fight an ancient evil that has gripped Ludlow since its founding and, once unearthed, has the power to destroy everything in its path. First, we should talk about casting. Jackson White stars as young Jud, a character made iconic by actor Fred Gwynne’s performance in the original. Jackson doesn’t exactly look like a young Gwynne, but he does give a great emotional performance, so I’m willing to look over it. Henry Thomas stars as Jud’s father, and while he has a tendency to play characters that seem distant, he showed more feeling here.

Spoiler-Free Review: PET SEMETARY: BLOODLINES (Fantastic Fest)

Director Lindsay Anderson Beer’s Pet Semetary: Bloodlines takes a portion of Stephen King’s novel Pet Semetary and expands it into a feature-length film, resulting in a gory, dread-filled prequel to the book and preceding film adaptations. In 1969, teenaged Jud Crandall (Jackson White) is set to be the first of his family line to leave Ludlow, Maine since the town was founded. He and his girlfriend Norma (Natalie Alyn Lind) are about to leave for Peace Corps duty when she is attacked by the dog belonging to Timmy Baterman (Jack Mulhern), one of Jud’s childhood friends, who has just returned from active duty in Vietnam and whose father Bill (David Duchovny) tries to keep visitors away from the increasingly disturbing Timmy. The attack hospitalizes Norma, keeping the couple in Ludlow longer than they planned, and naturally violent events involving the titular burial grounds occur. Manny (Forrest Goodluck), another longtime friend of Jud’s and Timmy’s, and his sister Donna (Isabella Star

Movie Review: Does 'The Boogeyman' Live Up To the Hype?

Movie Review: Does ‘The Boogeyman’ Live Up To the Hype?

Often, blockbuster movies don’t live up to the hype, leaving viewers disappointed, especially regarding adaptations. Is that the case with the new horror film The Boogeyman? I can answer that. Warning: Spoilers Ahead Based on Stephen King’s short story, The Boogeyman, the movie centers on two families linked together by tragedy and an ancient dark entity that is out to kill them, the same monster that lurks in the darkness of children’s closets and under their beds. The movie doesn’t waste any time, opening with a baby sleeping in her crib who suddenly wakes up screaming in terror as a monster emerges from her closet. We see blood splatter, and her crying stops. This sets the tone for the movie, which is brutal at times. Next, we are introduced to another family: a father (Chris Messina), a psychiatrist, and his two daughters, who are mourning, having just lost their mother. The youngest soon reveals that a monster is stalking her,
