Toronto International Film Festival 2021: Our Half-Dozen “Have to See!” Horror Films

Shocks and shudders abound during Toronto International Film Festival’s (TIFF) hybrid event September 9–18, 2021, with in-person cinema screenings in Toronto and digital screenings available to viewers across Canada. Among the incredible international line-up of horror, science fiction, thriller, and other genre-cinema styles are the following six stand-outs, which Horror Fuel highly recommends. My comments follow in italics after descriptions adapted from TIFF’s official program and website. Kicking Blood “Blaine Thurier’s sultry, perma-stoned, ultra-modern spin on the vampire genre evokes cult-horror figures like George A. Romero and Stuart Gordon.” Fusing the grittiness of George Romero’s Martin with the sly theatricality of Stuart Gordon’s early films (Re-Animator, From Beyond), Blaine Thurier’s Kicking Blood reimagines vampire mythology by transplanting it to the bohemian world Thurier has satirized since he began making films. Instead of the usual desiccated, tormented aristocrats with impossibly innocent victims, Thurier’s undead are hipster scavengers and swingers, their victims luckless hangers-on and drunks. Vampire Anna (Alanna Bale) is disappointed

Anna Taylor-Joy Reunites With Robert Eggers For His Retelling Of ‘Nosferatu’

Anna Taylor-Joy made her feature acting debut in Robert Eggers‘ The Witch before going on to starring in many high-profile movies such as The Queen’s Gambit. Now, Taylor-Joy is reuniting with the incredible director for his remake of the iconic 1922 vampire film Nosferatu. The original Nosferatu (there was a remake in 1979) was directed by F.W. Murnau and follows vampire Count Orlok who aims to buy a house in Germany. The vampire soon falls in love with the wife of his real estate agent. That may sound familiar, the silent film is an unofficial retelling of Bram Stoker’s iconic novel Dracula. Anna Taylor-Joy is also starring in Eggers’ upcoming project The Northman that will also star Bill Skarsgård, Ethan Hawke, Björk, Nicole Kidman, and Willem Defoe who appeared in Eggers’ The Lighthouse.

Stephen King adaptations continue to reign supreme. Recently the Epix vampire series “Chapelwaite” (review), based on King’s short story Jerusalem’s Lot, made its premiere. Today, the first casting news has arrived. Blu-ray Review: Night (2006 – 2021)

Detective Mike Jericho (John Hardy) is in a bit of a pickle; you see he’s become a blood lappin’ fang banger after inadvertently turning a comely lass into so much Swiss cheese with his pistol (as one does). How did that happen you may ask? Well, even if ya didn’t ask I’ll tell you! The woman was a vampire, so dying by bullet wound wasn’t really her “thing”, and she turns Mike into one as well. So with Mike’s nocturnal pursuits keeping him from his day job, his co-worker Jimi Cannon (Shawn LeTang) begins searching for his chum, which of course puts him in direct opposition of the creatures of the night who have no intention of giving Mike back to the land of the living! Shot on a shoestring by multi-talented filmmaker/musician Byron C. Miller (who wrote the fright flick as well), Night represents an impressive, if low-tech debut from someone that continues to work in the horror biz

Series Review: Epix’s “Chapelwaite” Is The Best New Show Of The Year!

When it comes to adaptations no writer’s work has been turned into series and films more than Stephen King (not that we’re complaining). The most recent adaptation of King’s work is Epix’s soon to premiere series “Chapelwaite,” based on King’s short story Jerusalem’s Lot. Academy Award® Winner Adrien Brody stars alongside Emily Hampshire in the series set in the 1850s. The series follows Captain Charles Boone (Brody), who relocates his family of three children to the ancestral home he inherited in the small, seemingly sleepy town of Preacher’s Corners, Maine after his wife dies at sea.  He is surprised to learn that the entire town hates his family. Hampshire’s Rebecca offers her services as a nanny for Charles’ children without him knowing that she took the job to learn more about his family for an article she’s secretly writing. Soon all hell breaks loose as Charles and his family become the target of vampires out to find an ancient book that
