31 Days Of Anime Horror Part 4: ‘Monster’

It’s October and that means it’s time to get into the spirit of the season, and obviously nothing gets you into the Halloween mood better than horror. Unfortunately when it comes to most live-action horror films, there’s only so much that can be done and shown, but thankfully of all things, Anime can cross the line with story, gore, and intriguing storytelling. So for every day this month, I’ll be featuring a unique Anime that fits the horror genre that you can most likely find on any streaming service. Let’s chase a killer in Monster. Monster may not 100% be considered a horror, but the dark psychological spider web it weaves says otherwise. The story follows a Japanese brain surgeon living in Germany and after performing lifesaving surgery on a little boy, a strange string of murders occur in with the surgeon was a suspect, years later the killings happen again and the doctor, though again being accused, discovered the

Blu-ray Review: FLCL: Progressive/Alternative (2018)

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own. The original FLCL (pronounced “fooly cooly”… just go with it) was a completely batshit insane coming of age tale featuring a young dude named Naota just trying to get by in the city of Mabase… too bad an alien named Haruko runs his ass over with her vespa, smacks him with her super charged guitar, and discovers a portal in Naota’s head can unleash robots created by Medical Mechanica. See what I mean by “batshit”? But under it all this was the story of a kid who was forced to grow up too fast coming to terms with his lost youth in order to become a well-adjusted adult. Flash forward twenty years, and we now have not one, but two sequel series, Progressive and Alternative by name (both available on one handy-dandy Blu-ray release

Short Film Review: BFF Girls (2018)

A gaggle of anime otaku femmes (played by Allison Maier, Jessica Shipp, and Syndey Thomas respectively) discuss periods and fend off the pervy advances of their talking cat, Neko Sensei (voiced by Laurence R. Harvey from The Human Centipede sequels). Meanwhile on a planet far away from our own, super pervert Fabuloso Doom (Lawrence Sykkmon) consults with his evil magic mirror (voiced by Dana Snyder) about how he can conquer our comely, though decidedly off-limits legally, heroines and stay eternally young and beautiful…which of course he interprets as a need to consume period blood (as anyone would). To that need he unleashes his evil monster Anti-Flow (Lea Enslin) which triggers our heroines transformation into the BFF (Beautiful Fantasy Flower ) Girls (played by Marilyn Chung, Jessica Nam, Carolann Utley) and a bloody good battle ensues! If you’ve ever wondered what Sailor Moon would be like it it were created by Lloyd Kaufman, and who hasn’t really, BFF Girls is the

Japan’s Cursed Ghost Story?

Japan is a unique country because of its ability to embrace the changing world around them while still having hold of its cultural roots. Storytelling, a fixture in Japanese entertainment, evolved over the years and the introduction of motion picture help not only tell stories of the past to newer generations but to outsiders curious about Japan’s culture. One story that’s been told for generations has been seen on stage numerous times and performed at Kabuki venues for as long as many can remember. This tale of betrayal and vengeance from the other world has made an impact on the entertainment industry that it can be said it inspired movies like Ju-On: The Grudge and The Ring, not only is the story famous for its impact on modern Japanese ghost stories but it’s said to be cursed because the vengeful spirit that’s center of the story is real. The story is called Yotsuya Kaidan, sometimes referred to The Story of
