Review: Supernatural: The Complete Series Box Set

One of my favorite things is opening my door to find boxes, so when I heard a knock at my door Monday I came out to find a big heavy box I was thrilled. I cut the tape and open the top and found bunches of paper stuffing. As I began digging I was excited to find my new “Supernatural: The Complete Series” Blu-ray/DVD box set. Let me tell you about it. This incredible, moving, action-packed series stars Jared Padalecki as Sam and Jensen Ackles as Dean, the Winchester brothers. Created by Eric Kripke the hit series has spanned fifteen seasons. While it is a horror series, “Supernatural” is at its heart about family. Brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, since day one, have always been on a mission to rid the world of dangerous monsters, but along the way, they have formed their own unique family while trying to save the world and each other from all types of monsters,

Movie Review: Seance

Simon Barrett takes us to haunted boarding school in his new horror film Seance. As usual with horror movies, there are only three ways it can go, bad, meh, and awesome. Luckily, I can now tell you that Seance is the latter of the three. First off, Seance doesn’t waste any time getting right into the spooky stuff, with a group of girls staring into the bathroom mirror, calling on the legendary school ghost, after learning it’s a prank all hell breaks loose and one girl is dead. When the new girl shows up, played by Suki Waterhouse (The Bad Batch, Assassination Nation), everything begins to unravel as the girls continue turning up dead. The question is, is it or ghost killing off the girls or is it something/someone more alive? Don’t worry, I’m not going to spoil it for you. I wouldn’t do that to you. Seance is a movie you’re actually going to want to watch for yourself.

Short Film Review: Down the Rabbit Hole (2021)

Remember when I laid my eerie eyeballs on the genius puppet-centric short flick The Ghost of Weatherton Hall a few months back (if not head here for the revoltin’ review)? Well, that film’s creator, Mark Dickinson is back (along with Fear Incorporated‘s William Westwater, who preforms excellent narration duties as well) with his latest nice slice of horror biz, Down the Rabbit Hole; a take on Lewis Carroll’s 1865 novel; Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland! Down the Rabbit Hole catches up with Alice as she finds herself deep within the nightmarish environs of London’s Bedlam Asylum for the Insane after a nervous breakdown related to a family tragedy. To escape this hellish reality, Alice retreats to Wonderland… though that once vibrant and fantastic landscape has now become every bit as vile and wasted as Alice’s current location! The reason for Wonderland’s current state is directly related to the Queen of Hearts sanity, or lack thereof, as she’s become power drunk and

Blu-ray Review: Deep Blood (1990)

There’s nothing like a good, fire roasted hot dog, and Raffaele Donato… or Joe D’Amato… must have thought so too as Deep Blood opens with what seems like an eternity of kids cooking hot dogs on a beach… hell, one of the scamps manages to use one as a shield to block his vision from the suns rays. Enter: a bum… or a “native American”… yes, those quotes are denoting some of my patented, award-losing sarcasm cats n’ creeps, as this dude looks to be nothing more than an old white guy in a beaded headband arrives and tells our wiener-hungry heroes that if they do a blood oath they can bring forth an evil spirit. Sounds legit. Moving forward a bit, that shit seems to have actually worked, as a mother and her young child stop for a swim in the middle of nowhere (speaking of “swimming”, although the characters are outside, the underwater shots of the kid swimming

Blu-ray Review: Day of the Animals (1977)

Outdoors-man Steve Buckner (the ever-reliable Christopher George) treks into the mountains with a rando assortment of hikers comprised of TV actors, Georges wife Lynda (whom he also co-starred with in the absolutely sublime slasher, Pieces) and Leslie Neilson (eventually doing a pre-Airplane/Police Squad/Naked Gun heel turn… but more on that in a bit). As science wouldn’t have it, the animals on that there mountain are going blood fuckin’ simple thanks to toxins from the sun’s radiation leaking through a hole in the ozone layer (but only those at 5000 feet elevation are affected)… but first the group must wander around and make with the small talk for a sight. When the animals do begin their assault the group is left rather defenseless thanks to Steve’s bullshit rule about not carrying firearms into the woods… although to be fair, how would he guess that such a ludicrous series of events was about to go down? As much as a threat as

UHD / Blu-ray Review: Santa Sangre (1989)

Ol’ Fenix (Axel Jodorowsky, director/co-writer Alejandro Jodorowsky’s son) spends his days siting buck-ass naked in a tree located within an insane asylum noshing only on raw fish. Look, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this may be the longest play for a plate of free sushi I have ever seen cats n’ creeps… Seems our hero grew up in the circus world under the auspices of his knife-tossin’ daddy, Orgo (Guy Stockwell) and his high-flyin’ mother, Concha (Blanca Guerra)… though to be fair, Orga has been setting his eerie eyeballs on his assistant, the tattooed woman (Thelma Tixou). Speaking of “eerie”, Concha just so happens to be the head honcho of a religious cult that has a perfectly insane patron saint in the form of the eponymous Santa Sangre; a little girl who was raped and unarmed… literally… by a duo of brothers… and after a series of unfortunate events under the big top, she

Movie Review: Son (2021)

How far would you go to save your child? That’s the question posed in writer-director Ivan Kavanagh’s horror-thriller Son. In the film, a young boy contracts a mysterious illness, experiencing horrific pain and seizures. His mother, Laura (Andi Matichak) must decide how far she will go to protect him from terrifying forces in her past. I can’t imagine how terrified Laura was throughout the film, but I do know how well Andi Matichak played the role. She really put her heart into making Laura feel authentic and the emotional chaos Laura experiences feels real. Laura is a strong character with an interesting and horrific backstory. She’s a character you can both find sympathetic and see her strength. And her character development was nicely done. As for detective Paul, Emile Hirsch had me fleeced up to the last moments of the film. I did not see that twist coming, and I should have and it was a great idea. Hirsch did

Movie Review: The Dustwalker (2019)

Tremors meets Dawn of the Dead meets Alien in writer-director Sandra Sciberras’ sci-fi horror The Dustwalker. In this Aussie film, one by one the residents of a small isolated town become infected, turning into brutal, bloodthirsty zombie-like creatures that are on a mission, spread the infection, or kill everyone they come in contact with, including loved ones. Those who are struggling to survive look to Joanne Sharp (Jolene Anderson), the local chief of police for guidance along with her right-hand man, Luke (Richard Davies). Things go from zero to sixty fast. The blood starts being shed in the first few minutes. Once the chaos begins, there are bodies and blood everywhere. And while the hints that something otherworldly involved pop up bit by bit once the big twist is revealed it’s all-out war. The villain in this tale is a clever combination of imagination, sci-fi, and science. One of the key elements to the infection takes inspiration from nature, the

DVD Review: “The Alienist Season 2: Angel Of Darkness”

I hold in my hand a copy of “The Alienist: Angel of Darkness“, which serves as the second season of the crime-thriller series from TNT, set to be released on May 18, 2021. Let me start with the box itself which has an almost metallic sheen and features an image of the three main stars, Daniel Brühl (Rush), Luke Evans (Midway), and Dakota Fanning (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), flanked by red wings dripping with blood. The box is quite beautiful and honestly, pictures don’t do it justice. It would make a fantastic piece for any collection. “Angel of Darkness” features eight one-hour episodes on three discs. The season picks up a year after the team’s first investigation where Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a pioneer in forensic psychiatry, tracked down the brutal serial killer John Beecham with the help of a team of trusted companions and a revolutionary application of the principles of his discipline. Kreizler and his friends–high-living crime

Blu-ray Review: Hercules and the Captive Women (1961)

Affable, nonchalant, and totally sleepy-AF Hercules (Reg Park, in his debut in the role) sets sail (along with his son Hylas… who looks to be the same age as our star, and Timoteo the comedy-relief dwarf… who at the least is considerably shorter than our star) and to find out why the skies of Greece are occasionally redder than a baboon’s ass. One nasty storm later, and our heroes find themselves on an island where women are fused with stone walls, and within seconds Hercules has to tangle with a snake, a lion, a vulture, and a lizard man… like every other Tuesday. Anyway, Herc soon finds himself at the bee-hived mercy of Antinea the Queen of Atlantis (Fay Spain) who is making a race of eyebrow-less Aryan super-men thanks to a magic rock (which contains the blood of Uranus, which will undoubtedly prove to be a real pain in the ass)… do you people reading these things ever stop
