Daniel XIII; the result of an arcane ritual involving a King Diamond album, a box of Count Chocula, and a copy of Swank magazine, is a screenwriter, director, producer, actor, artist, and reviewer of fright flicks…Who hates ya baby?

Massachusetts based writer/artist Tony McMillen’s (Lumen) latest comic book offering Serious Creatures is a book that should be easily embraced by those that visit this site. Don’t believe me? Well, you’re an asshole… but an asshole that should read on to learn just why I’m so hyped on this beastly book!

Serious Creatures concerns the adventures of teen Bobby Feckle, a young kid in the early 70’s with aspirations of being a special effects artist. A chance encounter during the filming of the biggest blockbuster of the mid-’70s (called Fin here, but you cats will dig what the book is laying down) sets Bobby on the first baby-steps of making his dreams a reality while at the same time his home-life begins to degrade.

I’m willing to bet demons to doughnuts that many of you cats n’ creeps are a lot like Bobby; you live, eat, and breath movie monsters morning, noon, and night… and I’d wager a good many of you have the dream to make movies, so there’s a bit of us in our antagonist which makes what happens to him so emotional.

As mentioned up yonder, things on the domestic front are tumultuous, and as one gift is handed to Bobby, a major pillar of his support system is removed from his life, and he is powerless to stop it… and you can’t help but feel for the guy.

On the illustration side of things; McMillen is a master of expressive art that is both detailed and gestural (no easy feat), and is a style uniquely his own… and what a ghoulishly gorgeous style it is!

So what am I sayin’ with all that? Simple, McMillen has created a fantastic character that’s truly “one of us” and is able to wring a great amount of pathos out of ‘im; so you’ll want to come back for more!

Be sure to head here and pick up a copy for your own damn selves!
